its NOT about P.Yates- its about some debutante who offed herself- in the 70s- supposedly based on a real event- geldof is the best songwriter since that aother Bob, (Dylan)
I beg to differ retroeds. The whole performace is unquestionably live, and I think the band performed well. Sometimes a live perforance doesn't go to plan, but a quality band will work together and recover.
@alibiproductions - yep, I agree - by "he couldn't recover it" I meant he couldn't find a way to recover the verse and get it back into the song. Love Bob to bits, nothing at all wrong with the actual performance :-)
Sad for anyone to die & THAT young AND for the loved ones left behind & for that reason alone they were a pair of WANKERS ; they were a pair of wankers anyway though ; went round behaving like arseholes the whole time
Absolute cracker of a song - but probably preferred the studio version. Sounded far more punchy! Only version on YouTube tho' - so beggars can't be chosers!
Erdfrresdf, no, Brenda Ann Spencer (the shooter who inspired I Don't Like Mondays) is currently serving 25 to life at the California Institution for Women in Chino. According to Wikipedia, Spencer just turned 46 on April 3, and will be eligible for parole (fifth try) in 2009. Good luck Brenda!
He cocked up on the second verse... went into "the girl in the cake" instead of "everybody tries..." and couldn't recover it ... shame as it's an otherwise good version, one of my favourite Rats tunes...
It's just not the same without Pete, Johnny, Simon, Garry and Gerry... but thanks for sharing.

@imogentheresnoheaven AGREED! I never liked 'Mondays' personally, their unknown-ish songs like this and Someones Looking At You were just AMAZING :D
indychik93 2 months ago
You gotta give Geldoff his props - only Sir Bob could pull off singing a song about a debutante hanging herself on national TV.
CommentorX 4 years ago 3
Supposedly about Paula Yates, whom Bob had just met and who wanted fame at any cost. You can see her in the crowd scenes on the promo video.
