This is a very good video to understand the terms of opensource lingo.

I have a question. Can we use a GPL licensed library to create a service

without sharing the sources.

Ex: Blender is an excellent free 3D s/w. I'll use the Blender

source(unmodified) to make a web service where users can use

blender's features.Should I also share the code that I've written

to wrap Blender api to web service??

Here I'm not at all modifying Blender, but I'm writing python scripts

which handle interactions.

@Simtron69 But here is the catch, sometimes if the vendor agrees in some form of contract with the open-source project's team, and drafts an agreement/contract and additionally pays them some nominal fee, perhaps they may allow it. Since the reason being it is kind of given to them in a different form of custom license.

Since (or say if), that open-source project is created by that sole open-source team, they have authority to release under multiple licenses.

@trafficsqueezerorg My Idea is to use the various libraries already available in Blender and python and create a new web service which will use the given software's built in features via web.Which means, 0% modification of original source code. I'm just mixing various oss projects. In this case, should I release the scripts that do the job for me?? BTW I'm charging for service only not s/w. Credits for OSS will also be specified. Unfortunately Blender comes in GPLv2 only.

@Simtron69 Also even such possibilities are there in my case too. Where I may have in future a complete 100% other fork of TrafficSqueezer which may be proprietary/commercial and close-source. In that case even I am working out a way to sort out how such thing is feasible. So once again it is to do with licensing and limiting and or expanding the scope of the sources.

@Simtron69 Good question. Actually you cannot. If you see any OEM who uses open-source tools/software, they will intimate you what open-source software tools they used. Also as a rule they allow you to download the sources from the website (although most of the times it is not much of any use). The reason being it is highly customized for that device/hardware platform.
