Don't just blame Comcast. Also blame Vulcan Ventures, the parent company of the network who willingly put it up for sale. I heard that TechTV was losing alot of money but was starting to do better in 2004, the year that it was sold.
I know that Tech TV can be the internet... but man that means TV is pretty much dead to me. It's rare that I'll turn on the television just knowing that everything I loved is gone. The only actual thing I'll watch on television is probably The Walking Dead but that's it. Nothing I find interesting no more.
ZDTV and Tech TV were more educational in a cool and fun way. Great shows. Now the only thing that involves in tech and video games is Attack of The Show (phony hosts) and Xplay (Advertised more than actually review)
I miss Techtv, I think someday there will be another channel devoted to tech. I don't think that g4 will bring back techtv, they may try but the people who made techtv what it was are all off doing bigger and better things.
And I disagree Chris, by saying that it will never happen again is a fallacy, and the reason why everyone liked techtv/zdtv is because instead of searching around for the information, it was brought to them on their tv. Techtv was something I enjoyed because there was something always on, and I could play it in the background to fall asleep to, or listen to when I did my homework. Techtv was my life, and when it died, a part of me did to. I'm not moving on, it was my life.
I don't know if I can agree with the idea that there will never be another TV channel devoted to tech. Sure, you can get all your tech news/content from the net, but people, almost all of whom have numerous "tech" devices, still like to watch content on their 46" 1080p TV screens. Yes, you can run an HDMI cable to your TV from the computer, but how many people actually do that? I say that there is still a huge demand for tech related content on TV, just waiting for someone to fill the void.
I have to say no, techtv will be back! After people see that no one liles g4, they will bring it back. The only reason g4 is still around is cause the people who worship cops.

This is the "X" the former Booking Manager from Tech Live (I won't type my name), but I wanted to just salute you for the eloquence with which you stated your viewpoint in this video. I've had a hard time letting go of Tech TV myself and often get asked the G4 question as well. And you hit the nail on the head. G4 has nothing to do with our old network. I miss TechTV I honestly wish It was still around. Its the reason why I got into the computer and tech area. I was about 10 or 11 can't remember But I know I was in 6th grade when my dad was watching ScreenSavers when I came home from school and it was imo awesome!

EyeDrops was really cool. Although when I watched it I was like 15-17...I used to go out and party with my Friends and I just remember late at night I would be Trippin watching Eyedrops.LOL

I wouldn't say there will not be another channel focused on technology - I think the idea holds some merits, and if TV companies were smarter they would have done something like TechTV wayyy before it was done. Getting to my point here: I think there will be a channel focused on technology 24/7. I don't know when it will come, but it's bound to happen sometime in the future. Could be a year, ten years, one-hundred years - but it will happen, and I'm just hoping that I'll be around when it does.
I watch X-play but thats about it. AOTS simply sucks and everything else on the channel is re-runs. I'd suggest they go all the way and cancel everything and just be a 24 hr paid advertising channel.
You may say TechTV will never come back and we should move on because it's all online now. All I have to say is I'd pay $50/month if I could get TechTV HD... Consider that and the fact there's many folks like me, it's about time to start it back up.
I think G4 had it right at first when it was G4/techtv...It was very tolerable to watch, but then G4 wanted so bad to be like Spiketv.

i used to love g4 back when every show they aired had to do with gaming. in fact techtv & g4 were my two favorite netwoks. then the restructuring began and well, you know the rest.
ZDTV came about when computers were a niche product. This was great because we could learn so much and be fulfilled with our need for new tech and gadgets. For me, it was around 2002 when I could see the difference and it wasn't good. Once G4 came about it was over. And it has been ever since. I refuse to claim Attack of the Show! as the successor to The Screen Savers. Thank God some original personalities like Leo Laporte are keeping ZDTV somewhat alive. R.I.P. ZDTV. You are missed.
I was watching TechTV when it was still ZDTV. I loved it up until the G4 switch. However, I also love the fact that many of you (the hosts) are doing your own things and still keeping the TechTV spirit alive on the 'net.
same here, I got my sattelite like 12-15 years ago, cant remember exactly, but zdtv was one of the first channels I ever saw, and I had my tv on that a good 85 percent of the time. Gamespot was awesome, and Lauren Fielder was cute as hell. It was weird when G4 first came on, and I had this paranoid thought that they are going to ruin it somehow. Turns out I wasnt paranoid at all. I think there should be a channel dedicated to tech on tv. And if I win the lotto, there will be. hahaha
G4 sold out like a bitch. It pisses me off, because I remember watching tech tv when I was in elementary school, and it got me into more anime, I learned about the history of certain games, I learned more about technology and how to fix certain problems with my computer, it also got me into computer graphics stuff (eye drops).
But now less that 25% of the channel is about games, they either play cheaters, cops, or some movie from the 80s, or some show that should be on spike tv instead :(
I remember watching G4 soon after the merge. G4 was the the slowly disintegrating husk of what Tech TV had once been: the magic was gone. Even so I continued watching until the network became unbearable. With the airing of shows like Cheaters and Cops, the well known cancellations, along with the deterioration of X-Play I found myself incapable of watching the constant drivel spewing from the channel. It was a sad day, indeed.
I used to love Tech TV then G4 came in, and it was alright for awhile cause you had tech & gaming, but then it went down hill and has become the little retarded brother of Spike.
I mean, G4 and TechTV were both great when they were seperate channels. I mean, Tommy Tallarico even hatres G4 now, and he was part of it originally. Kevin Pererra is pretty much the only original G4 personality who survived the merge, and Adam Sessler/Morgan Webb are the only remaining TechTVers, really, neither channel survived. G4 is now a wannabe MTV that doesn't take itself nor its viewers very seriousely, and that just isn't cool.
G4 was great, when it was about gaming. but when it merged with Tech TV, which was itself a good channel. I though ti would be a perfect marriage. Technology and gaming, seems natural. But now, G4 is like the little retarded brother of Spike TV. It's like all of the shows that were canceled or not good enough for Spike get dumped on G4. It is a shame because it was a good network.
I have been watching forever and I rem watching you on Tech tv... BUT.. I think some people are grumpy cause Kevin & Olivia shoved them in a locker and stole their lunch money ;) And the difference between then and now is that it was for nerds... NOW its for geeks... Big difference there chief... And Geeks will ALWAYS rule the nerds...
I do miss TechTV though Chris and Call for Help was one of my favorite shows on it. Now that G4 took it over there is no tech in it anymore. I still hold out hope of another TechTV style network though.

I definitely celebrate the "memory" of ZDTV/TechTV. It introduced me to people like you and Leo, both of whom I had the opportunity to meet in person. If TechTV still existed, communal opportunities, like Gnomedex and Macworld Expo, probably would have never presented itself.
there is a lot of crap on G4 but there are a lot of good material on it. I watch attack of the show and there is some good stuff on there. Like good gadget reviews and things like that. I think that you are being irrational for not watching something on tv just because G4 is covering it. But that's just what i think
TechTV was great. I refuse to watch G4 also, and like Chris said, it is entertainment, but it is just like everything else. Which I think is sad because TechTV was different and G4 took all that stuff, melted it down, and shoved it in the same mold every other TV network uses. I do agree that people from TechTV are doing better things now, but there was something great about turning on my TV and knowing i could see something technology related.

i agree with some that you say and i have met people who are complete utter jerks and not only that they are gamer jocks with huge egos and they relate with kevin at attack of the show this is the audience that they were looking for not the Techies,nerds,geeks and the underdog that made techtv so great. I Do not like. G4 at all and i will not give them the satisfaction. i have signed a petition to have it removed from my cable and sattelite and i have succeded. TECHTV will always be remembered.
G4 sucks. It bills itself as a tech type of network but in reality it isn't. Attack of the show , Cheats, and Xplay are fine shows but they aren't about technology. Chris is right about G4 being an entertainment network because it has nothing to do with tech other than to maybe mention it once in a while.
I miss TechTV, I miss how they helped create so many communities that are currently as I speak.I do still keep in touch and watch the host from TechTV. For example, much of what I watch are from podcast that I downloaded from iTunes. They have Chris, Kevin Rose, and other former TechTV host.
G4 to me is a completely different network of shows than TechTV ever was. So if I watch it, I watch it for entertainment and not as a form of nostalgia.
TechTV was the best channel ever. The screensavers, Call for Help and Extended Play (now x-play) were the best. now that it's G4, they've become too raunchy, i cant watch a show without worrying about seeing something horrible. i watched 1 episode of Attack of the Show and never am again. Comcast killed TechTV and ill never forgive them for that. only programs i watch on G4 anymore are Unbeatable Banzuke and Ninja Warrior, i hate the stupid commercials they air during shows too. i cant take them
I miss TechTV i could just turn it on and sit and watch it for hours and enjoy whatever came on. Hell I remember Gamespot TV with Adam Sessler in Metreon, I was even watching when the infamous "accident" on call for help happened... And watching the crew of the screen savers was just hilarious on its own... and G4 has just turned into MTV 1.5 .. but alot worse :|
techtv was a great thing but it did the same thing mtv did it realized the money was in the masses so they sold out like everyone else does now we have another run of the mill station and a station dedicated to nothing but 24/7 terrible reality shows but as always we have the internet so we march on
TechTV was freaking amazing and there is no exception too that; all of their programming was amazing and we (geeks) found a home there. G4 was cool when it started, still showing remnants of its TechTV predecessor, but it has become a mess now barely fit for mainstream geekdom. I do find it to be quite disgusting that we lost such a great network; but I am glad that my favorite hosts went on to do bigger and better things :)
In my opinion, I think that today's G4TV sucks. It's all Ninja Warrior and Japanese stuff now. Yeah sure they have AOTS but it will never be as good as G4/TechTV.

Our youth seems no longer is going outside, getting dirty and getting hurt as they learn to build there character and learn to play directly with other youth with a good interaction. This is very important for growth and proper communicative interactions with other people. Doing this behind a screen does not help as i have seen people loose there communication skills time and time again. It's only going to get worse as games become more complex, take out lives away, TV dumbs us down and
Games should be simple, a short pass time of playing but then many will say but they get boring to quickly. Is it because this is all you know how to do in your free time, are you too narrow minding to find other more constructive things to do or do you lack imagination to make the older less time consuming games still interesting to you? It seems like anyone is willing to come up with an excuse. I rarely see anyone playing outside anymore as technology has made us fat and lazy.
G4 turned to toyal crap; it used to be a TV Channel about Video Games, and when it was "combined" with TechTV it was supposed to be about both Video Games and Tech. Well, it turned out that only 3 shows from TechTV (and only 1 out of those was directly tech related) had been put on G4. Now the only video game-related shows are X-Play, AoTS (kind of...) and Cheat (which was combined with x-Play) so in reality there's only 1 currently running show that's fully dedicated to video games.
I have a close friend who has the potential to become a great fiction writer, instead he plays games all evening and all weekend while his potential waists away. Two is another person i know personally has the ability to become a great illustrator, instead he is playing games all night and a good part of the day. There is nothing wrong with games in general but they have become to complex, to expensive and the game companies are clearly loving the profit margins.
Clearly, unlike your friend, you have no potential to be a writer. I have yet to see a sentence you have written that does not have at least one error.

G4 is an example of the dumbing down of society were asinine behavior and playing is all the rage. I tend to think we are losing are focus on knowledge, eduction and making learning fun and it can be fun. Now it's all about spending fortunes on complex video games and spending a massive part of our lives in front of these games. A couple of examples here.
G4 has lost sight of its subject and theme. Example: They still haven't figured out, that PC gaming outsells ALL other gaming platforms. New statistical data, in a recent article I wrote, for the PCGA, can a attest to this fact.

I think it's possible for a channel to be about technology and computers. The only problem is it staying that way. Everyone wants to be mainstream now on TV and it sickens me. G4 is no longer a channel for gamer's and tech nerd's. They show shit like COPS, Star Trek, and others that don't belong there.
If I was in charge of a channel and went with it where I wanted it to go, it would stay videogames, computer's and whatnot for as long as I was there and was breathing.

I liked techtv better when it was still Zdtv (and Kate Botello was still on SS - thats goin way back) but im prolly just bein bias due to the fact that I got to hang out with them all back then. Went to battlebots (thanks to zD) when it was first gettin off the ground and hang out with Leo Laporte there. LOL im such a nerd I had kate and leo sign my PC side panel My scanner lid and some other stuff. Got just about everyones, was just fun being part of it at the start. ESP Comdex 2k in Vegas =]
I will never forget the Christmas special where you all hosted it all day, it was so fun to watch, especially with the bloopers and things like where you told Morgan to take her shirt off haha.

TechTV was a fantastic channel that really informed people about technology. G4 is mostly reruns of cops with the occasional tech shows thrown in but they aren't that great to be honest. I could remember watching TechTV a whole lot because I was really into computer things and video games but now, it just seems that they don't have a whole lot of things on it to really span a days worth of television viewing.
TechTV was great. and g4 NOW sucks, G4 is owned my comcast, and i have comcast basic cable ,and recently they took off g4. I mean g4techtv had some great shows. G4 (now) has Less great shows than G4TechTV. Like code monkeys MY FAVORITE show

G4TV and TechTV are synonymous with MTV. They both had a clear purpose and well defined target audience in the beginning but have blurred into mass market low cost crap targeted for pop crazy pre-teens or mindless drones.

i used to love g4 back when every show they aired had to do with gaming. in fact techtv & g4 were my two favorite netwoks. then the restructuring began and well, you know the rest.

ZDTV came about when computers were a niche product. This was great because we could learn so much and be fulfilled with our need for new tech and gadgets. For me, it was around 2002 when I could see the difference and it wasn't good. Once G4 came about it was over. And it has been ever since. I refuse to claim Attack of the Show! as the successor to The Screen Savers. Thank God some original personalities like Leo Laporte are keeping ZDTV somewhat alive. R.I.P. ZDTV. You are missed.

same here, I got my sattelite like 12-15 years ago, cant remember exactly, but zdtv was one of the first channels I ever saw, and I had my tv on that a good 85 percent of the time. Gamespot was awesome, and Lauren Fielder was cute as hell. It was weird when G4 first came on, and I had this paranoid thought that they are going to ruin it somehow. Turns out I wasnt paranoid at all. I think there should be a channel dedicated to tech on tv. And if I win the lotto, there will be. hahaha

G4 sold out like a bitch. It pisses me off, because I remember watching tech tv when I was in elementary school, and it got me into more anime, I learned about the history of certain games, I learned more about technology and how to fix certain problems with my computer, it also got me into computer graphics stuff (eye drops).
But now less that 25% of the channel is about games, they either play cheaters, cops, or some movie from the 80s, or some show that should be on spike tv instead :(

I remember watching G4 soon after the merge. G4 was the the slowly disintegrating husk of what Tech TV had once been: the magic was gone. Even so I continued watching until the network became unbearable. With the airing of shows like Cheaters and Cops, the well known cancellations, along with the deterioration of X-Play I found myself incapable of watching the constant drivel spewing from the channel. It was a sad day, indeed.

I mean, G4 and TechTV were both great when they were seperate channels. I mean, Tommy Tallarico even hatres G4 now, and he was part of it originally. Kevin Pererra is pretty much the only original G4 personality who survived the merge, and Adam Sessler/Morgan Webb are the only remaining TechTVers, really, neither channel survived. G4 is now a wannabe MTV that doesn't take itself nor its viewers very seriousely, and that just isn't cool.

G4 was great, when it was about gaming. but when it merged with Tech TV, which was itself a good channel. I though ti would be a perfect marriage. Technology and gaming, seems natural. But now, G4 is like the little retarded brother of Spike TV. It's like all of the shows that were canceled or not good enough for Spike get dumped on G4. It is a shame because it was a good network.

I do miss TechTV though Chris and Call for Help was one of my favorite shows on it. Now that G4 took it over there is no tech in it anymore. I still hold out hope of another TechTV style network though.

I definitely celebrate the "memory" of ZDTV/TechTV. It introduced me to people like you and Leo, both of whom I had the opportunity to meet in person. If TechTV still existed, communal opportunities, like Gnomedex and Macworld Expo, probably would have never presented itself.

TechTV was great. I refuse to watch G4 also, and like Chris said, it is entertainment, but it is just like everything else. Which I think is sad because TechTV was different and G4 took all that stuff, melted it down, and shoved it in the same mold every other TV network uses. I do agree that people from TechTV are doing better things now, but there was something great about turning on my TV and knowing i could see something technology related.

i agree with some that you say and i have met people who are complete utter jerks and not only that they are gamer jocks with huge egos and they relate with kevin at attack of the show this is the audience that they were looking for not the Techies,nerds,geeks and the underdog that made techtv so great. G4 sucks. It bills itself as a tech type of network but in reality it isn't. Attack of the show , Cheats, and Xplay are fine shows but they aren't about technology. Chris is right about G4 being an entertainment network because it has nothing to do with tech other than to maybe mention it once in a while.

I miss TechTV, I miss how they helped create so many communities that are currently as I speak.I do still keep in touch and watch the host from TechTV. For example, much of what I watch are from podcast that I downloaded from iTunes. They have Chris, Kevin Rose, and other former TechTV host.
G4 to me is a completely different network of shows than TechTV ever was. So if I watch it, I watch it for entertainment and not as a form of nostalgia.

TechTV was the best channel ever. The screensavers, Call for Help and Extended Play (now x-play) were the best. now that it's G4, they've become too raunchy, i cant watch a show without worrying about seeing something horrible. i watched 1 episode of Attack of the Show and never am again. Comcast killed TechTV and ill never forgive them for that. only programs i watch on G4 anymore are Unbeatable Banzuke and Ninja Warrior, i hate the stupid commercials they air during shows too. i cant take them

I miss TechTV i could just turn it on and sit and watch it for hours and enjoy whatever came on. Hell I remember Gamespot TV with Adam Sessler in Metreon, I was even watching when the infamous "accident" on call for help happened... And watching the crew of the screen savers was just hilarious on its own... and G4 has just turned into MTV 1.5 .. but alot worse :|

TechTV was freaking amazing and there is no exception too that; all of their programming was amazing and we (geeks) found a home there. G4 was cool when it started, still showing remnants of its TechTV predecessor, but it has become a mess now barely fit for mainstream geekdom. I do find it to be quite disgusting that we lost such a great network; but I am glad that my favorite hosts went on to do bigger and better things :)

Our youth seems no longer is going outside, getting dirty and getting hurt as they learn to build there character and learn to play directly with other youth with a good interaction. This is very important for growth and proper communicative interactions with other people. Doing this behind a screen does not help as i have seen people loose there communication skills time and time again. Games should be simple, a short pass time of playing but then many will say but they get boring to quickly. Is it because this is all you know how to do in your free time, are you too narrow minding to find other more constructive things to do or do you lack imagination to make the older less time consuming games still interesting to you? It seems like anyone is willing to come up with an excuse. I rarely see anyone playing outside anymore as technology has made us fat and lazy.

G4 turned to toyal crap; it used to be a TV Channel about Video Games, and when it was "combined" with TechTV it was supposed to be about both Video Games and Tech. Well, it turned out that only 3 shows from TechTV (and only 1 out of those was directly tech related) had been put on G4. Now the only video game-related shows are X-Play, AoTS (kind of...) and Cheat (which was combined with x-Play) so in reality there's only 1 currently running show that's fully dedicated to video games.

I have a close friend who has the potential to become a great fiction writer, instead he plays games all evening and all weekend while his potential waists away. Two is another person i know personally has the ability to become a great illustrator, instead he is playing games all night and a good part of the day. There is nothing wrong with games in general but they have become to complex, to expensive and the game companies are clearly loving the profit margins.

I tend to think we are losing are focus on knowledge, eduction and making learning fun and it can be fun. Now it's all about spending fortunes on complex video games and spending a massive part of our lives in front of these games. A couple of examples here.

I hate G4. I don't go on it either anymore. Why would they add star-trek? Really. Nobody likes the show. It wasn't even that popular back when it was airing new episodes. G4 shouldn't of changed anything about tech tv but they did which is why it failed. Also X-play is now horrible. They're not funny anymore. They must of got new writers. Screensavers was awesome but was replaced with attack of the show, and They don't know shit about what theyre doing nearly as much as people from screensavers.

I think it's possible for a channel to be about technology and computers. The only problem is it staying that way. Everyone wants to be mainstream now on TV and it sickens me. G4 is no longer a channel for gamer's and tech nerd's. They show shit like COPS, Star Trek, and others that don't belong there.
If I was in charge of a channel and went with it where I wanted it to go, it would stay videogames, computer's and whatnot for as long as I was there and was breathing.

I liked techtv better when it was still Zdtv (and Kate Botello was still on SS - thats goin way back) but im prolly just bein bias due to the fact that I got to hang out with them all back then. Went to battlebots (thanks to zD) when it was first gettin off the ground and hang out with Leo Laporte there. LOL im such a nerd I had kate and leo sign my PC side panel My scanner lid and some other stuff. Got just about everyones, was just fun being part of it at the start. ESP Comdex 2k in Vegas =]

TechTV was a fantastic channel that really informed people about technology. G4 is mostly reruns of cops with the occasional tech shows thrown in but they aren't that great to be honest. I could remember watching TechTV a whole lot because I was really into computer things and video games but now, it just seems that they don't have a whole lot of things on it to really span a days worth of television viewing.

Tech TV cut its own Jugular when they let Kate & Leo go. Chris you were a great host and stuck to it but it was a runaway train.
G4TV and TechTV are synonymous with MTV. They both had a clear purpose and well defined target audience in the beginning but have blurred into mass market low cost crap targeted for pop crazy pre-teens or mindless drones.
