I read it with two Secret Additional Protocols. This "friendship" and "non-agression" was infact dividing territory of Polish state.

After partition of Poland Germany signed another pact "GermanSoviet Boundary and Friendship Treaty" and again secret articles described border corrections between USSR and Nazi Germany. This friendship was so close that was four conferences Gestapo-NKVD where nazis and communists planned another "non-agresion" acts against Poles.

Since the USSR couldn't actually have any base in eastern Europe (being thrown out of there by European alliance didn't help out), soviets had to get as much time as possible, to get on an offensive. That would have made the war much shorter. Although the aftermath of that is questionable.
