It's definitely one of those mind f*** of a movies. I love it. It makes you think. I saw an episode of Prophets of Science about Philip K Dick. I've seen Minority Report and read a little of A Scanner Darkly and saw the movie. I'll have to revisit his work because he definitely has a strange and brilliant minds.
can sum1 explain what happened???!?!!!! 1 sec ee was diein on mars the next he is fine and is walkin around!!! WTF??? dnt get it (BTW he soooo wud av died after bein on mars dat long his ed wud have blown up ages ago!)
Wouldn't they get The Bends from the air pressure changing so rapidly? Not even mentioning what might happen from going to a mostly carbon dioxide atmosphere to an oxygenated one that rapidly.
So do we know for a fact that Cohagen (Ronny Cox) actually died? Yes, his eyes shot out of his head, but do we see him die? Perhaps Mr. Cox is still alive...somewhere...who knows what he's doing...Playing music...?...Nah...
After having all the air sucked out of my lungs from the near vacuum of Mars' atmosphere, I'd say the sudden onrush of breathable air would be a moot point amid the massive soft tissue damage.
Also, how is that the explosion is strong enough to shatter glass and hurl bodies from miles away, but does absolutely nothing to the two people at ground zero?
1. Although made in '85, this film got some important science right. 1. Mars' polar caps water- ice, not carbon dioxide as previously thought. 2. You could survive on mars today with just an oxygen mask.and could probably live a few minutes without one. 3.Since reactor to convert ice to oxygen was made by super advanced civilization once it was started anything would be possible.
He got lobotomized back on Earth didn't he? I find it strange such triumphant music plays when in fact the audience should realize by now that this was all a dream and Quaid is fucked. Everything in the movie supporting the dream theory came true, so it's only logical that what Dr.Edgemar said about "back on Earth you'll be lobotomized" would be true. The movie ends with Quaid being lobotomized...even Paul Verhoeven himself says the movie's supposed to be a dream.
This movie is full of lies and disinformation. Mars has a breathable oxygen atmosphere of 700 Millibars pressure. Now imagine...sea level on earth is 1000 millibars. Mt Everest is 300 Millibars!!!! That most that would happen if you went to Mars would be your ears popping!!!! You'd have to get vaccines out the ying yang before going there, and you'd have to make sure you didn't mess with any of the critters crawling in the sand...and keep your gear in case of sandstorms
@mshafer1021---Survival on Mars would be pretty easy actually. All you do is dig a well, plant some crops and you are good to go. Martian soil is exotic and vigorous, and will grow hearty crops with proper watering. Summer is longer there, so the growing season is better. The average temp on Mars is 70 degrees, sometimes in the 80s. A specially equipped all terrain vehicle powered by zero point energy will take you far from the base camp with no problem!!!!
@mshafer1021---One last thing: the sky on Mars is baby blue, just like earth. All NASA photos are doctored. There are teams of miners, geologists and ARCHAEOLOGISTS going up there all of the time!!! There is so much crap to study on Mars, its not even funny. There are ruins of ancient civilizations up there that would blow you away!!! Martian gold is much more valuable too because of its density. Just letting you know what goes on up there, which you will NEVER be made aware of officialy
@SimDuay05 Unless you believe that he's actually still in that machine having his secret agent dream. That's why I love this movie. Kinda like how whether Dreckard is a replicant or not in Blade Runner.
I just read about this movie in a book about philosophy. Definitely, this film is a contribution to theories with regards to how we describe the world we live and all around us as being real. Another movies that portray the same concept are The Matrix and recently, Inception (with Leonardo Di Caprio as the protagonist).
like seriously those fake rubber faces with the bulging eyes and shit is so fucking freaky lookin. I love that stuff because it's so grotesque and better looking than stupid CGI
This ending is cool but quite fake. If a human was exposed to a vacuum, their head would not inflate, their eyeballs pop out, etc. They would still suffocate and die if exposed long enough, but not in such a graphic way. Oh well, still an awesome film; I guess movies sometimes take scientific liberties to make them more entertaining.
@smdmorga Actually, they would inflate. This was studied by Russian scientists during the space race - to test the effects of space on exposed Earthlings, they jettisoned stray dogs into space unprotected. The dogs inflated to roughly 4x their normal size, because the higher pressure on the inside of their bodies was trying to reach equilibrium with the much lower pressure in the vacuum. However, you are correct in that the eventual cause of death was suffocation, not inflation.
What do you think this "adventure" is: a dream or reality ?
I say it's a dream because after you experience Mars climate like this you will never be as pretty as you were before. AND when the soldiers shoot at the hologram of Arnie they shoot from all sides so they have to shoot each other but they didn't. That are just some story glitches at the Recall center.
So it's a dream!
Poor Arnie has to stick with the blond girl after all. ^^
i gotta say you cant compare the graphic effects of movies from the 80s to todays movies, its very distinct, i feel theyre more creepy that any other era
The crew and actors had to be really driven to do a scene like this. Suffering like that on mars being paid on a sag scale wouldn't make me do it. Sag or not, The heat and the pressure these people went through is unspeakable. I threw up multiple times thinking about the problems they had to got through just to get this scene. Even if they had to do retakes of the scene, Arnold should be happy to still be alive now, and still standing in California. they could have got stunt doubles Who knows...
So you think it's real and they went to mars??? and yes that does happen the air pressure decreased so their bubbles in their bodies expanded and your eyes get pushed out
Those basturds in charge were willing to kill everybody to keep it a secret. Very realistic.
When UFO's were discovered per Hangar 18 they discovered an energy source of unlimited capacity but now you can see why it's covered-up; to keep you paying their bills.
Nuclear war is coming to cover-up what is being slowly uncovered, the majority lose by far. It's no coincidence that a lot of games & contests have been put on and 99% of new inventions rip you off since 1999

People say this movie's bad?? Send them over my way, I'll take em to school. This movie's a fucking classic and one of Arnold's best. That's saying a LOT. I've been an Arnold fan since I was like 5 years old in 1990 and his movies are mostly amazing. I can name maybe 2 or 3 honestly bad movies of his and that's pushing it.
@jerseyboycamd I agree. I saw this when I was a little kid and that ending where they're choking scared the hell out of me. It just looked so surreal that it was incredibly disturbing. Of course when I see it now I can find the humor in it because they look like stressed out puppets. But back then it was pretty gross.
Yes they would, we have air compressed in our bodies and getting into lower pressure would make the air expand. Holding your breath in an unbreathable atmosphere while decompressing WILL NOT help but makes things worse.
even tho oxygen just sprang out of no where isn't mars still to far from the sun for them to survive? shouldn't they be frozen?! also they should be twice as light on mars since there is less gravity!
We need Mythbusters for this. So, they can test whether if altering a dead planet's environment would be possible and give it a substantial balance life lol.
The Martian "summer" reaches temperatures of around 10degrees Centigrade maximum, which is 50 degrees Fahrenheit. It certainly doesnt reach 27 degrees C, which would be 81 Fahrenheit.
Oh my god.. I really wanted to visit mars, but i don't think i could handle that kind of pressure... I get emotional when i see this, these poor people had to suffer like that for this film.
wow, u actually think mars air is breathable... although he wouldnt have been able to last on the mountain for longer that a few seconds because of the heat, during day its 600 F night is like -200 F
I would imagine that your are thinking of Venus; it can be as high as 600-900F. Mars is extremely cold; a "dry" cold, due to there being no precipitation. Martian "summer" temperatures get to around 50F, which is around !0Centigrade. It definitely does NOT get up to 600F: nightime temperatures can get as low as minus 100-150 F late into the night, and that is near the equator too.
wow this is hilarious. first of all, you would die in 12 sec from explosive decompression. 2nd, there is no air so no sound could be heard. 3rd, your eyes would simply boil, not bulge out like that.
man even though he was the bad guy u gotta feel bad for cohagen, his death was the worst, his eyes were like literally sticking out of his sockets. ugh.
The remake will never top this film. It has no R rating and no Mars.

wow this is hilarious. first of all, you would die in 12 sec from explosive decompression. 2nd, there is no air so no sound could be heard. 3rd, your eyes would simply boil, not bulge out like that.
cheweybaca 2 years ago
Boiling eyes are not as cool as bulging ones. It's about coolness, not accuracy :D

The Irony is that there is air on Mars, but it just Carbon Dioxide and no Oxygen.

Arnold looked like Rodney Dangerfield for a split second. Thats what happens to fish when you reel them up from the bottom of the ocean too fast.

man even though he was the bad guy u gotta feel bad for cohagen, his death was the worst, his eyes were like literally sticking out of his sockets. ugh.
burtonrules123 3 years ago 3
he got turned inside out by the pressure, so all of his internal organs and bones would have been crushed too

I think it ties with that guy who ran into the toxic waste container in "Robocop".
