What excellent memories. I think "hey what about those shorts they used play at night on YTV?" Two minutes later, and I'm back 15 years. I used to figure I'd somehow find this song one day, and here all the vids are.
Funny how we all more stuff and better stuff, and yet so many of us were really struck by these, and wouldn't mind going to back to all it. The future is better? Seems a bit hard to believe when you look and listen to these. Those were the days ...
Talk about bringing back memories, and giving a warm, fuzzy, nostalgic feeling. I can also see by some of the comments below I wasn't the only one to have this song stuck in my head for the last fifteen years without actually being able to hear it. I certainly thank you for uploading this. I'm also suprised to see that so many of these shorts still look good even by today's standards. This was truly the golden age of computer animation.
@VinnDiddy The artists then had to accomplish this with sheer artistry, inspiration, and some really great music what the hardware would not let them do otherwise. Sometimes I think the computer graphics industry has almost forgotton about the "artistry and inspiration" bit in favour of pretty pixels.
OMG! Ive finally found the tune thats been stuck in my head all these years! HA! OMG Im soooooooo happy I can listen to it without my own humming for once! I loved this little tune, Im 25 now and its stuck with me since I was like 6 probably
@mrlips007 me too! I wish I'd searched for this sooner - this video/tune in particular, have stayed with me, and I always think of it fondly/wistfully. Am 24 btw - was it really from when we were that little? *sigh*
@kerrigwen Ya but Im only 2 years older then you so dont feel too bad...BTW I worked it out on electric guitar :-D Now I can play my fav old tune whenever it gets stuck in my head yipee!
I haven't seen the 1st one so I can't put it down.
But they're all to good!
Luckily I have those 3 on DVD :)
They were pretty much the 1st songs/music videos I ever watched because I was born in 1994 and my parents say I would put my face into the screen because of the amazement....
This was my favourite Short Circuitz video, and I was obsessed with it everytime it came on before ReBoot. It's been stuck in my head for a decade or so now. Ughhh I feel so nostalgic right now.
@vwl15 This was (still is) my favourite, too! I remember having to plead with my mother to stay up to watch these. I would watch TV again if the commercials were this sort of thing. I hate commercials so much. But this is art at its finest.
Thanks so much for uploading this!! So much nostalgia for the old YTV days..i remember being ten years old and seeing these between episodes of Beasties and ReBoot!!!
i remember tha i liked this song so much when i was young, that i learned how to play it on my parents telephone that looked and sounded like a piano.
took me a while to find this video. im glad i did. so happy <3
Took some major digging (keywords are awesome, aren't they?) Found it! Instantly favourited! :-) Thank you thank you thank you for posting this! Amazed that there are so many others who loved this clip as much as I did. I was facinated so much by her words back when this first came out on YTV...that I wrote a song called "Of the Butterfly". This song rolls through my head at least a couple of times a month. Now I can watch any time I like! Yay!
I loved this as a kid, but the part with the moving statues used to creep me out. Mainly because the song changes key there.. it sounds...darker. Very cool, this song reminds me of my childhood.
I want to learn the entire album on guitar but can't find any tabs and I'm not that good enough to learn it by ear. I believe this album needs to be done in an opera hall in NYC with the videos playing in 3D on a huge screen.
I got very lucky, I picked up a DVD set on EBay called "The Mind's Eye Collection". It's 5 DVDs including the *original* The Mind's Eye, and the quality is very good considering many of these clips probably had to be sourced from VHS.
It's apparently from Taiwan; I can't read the writing on the DVD covers but all the videos are there! I only got it after a lucky hit after looking for it for ages.
The later Mind's Eye films (starting with "Beyond the Mind's Eye") had western DVD releases.
Count yourself lucky. I only have an old VHS copy of the original Mind's Eye that is really starting to show its age. I wouldn't give it up for anything other than a full DVD collection myself.
Long live boundary-pushing art like this. Despite how primitive it may be to jaded modern eyes, there is still an undeniable artistry to every frame of these old animated shorts.
When I first saw these as a kid, I thought nothing of them. Now these all seem like such deep and fascinating works of art. Is the whole idea of us being a butterfly is that we're all able to soar beyond our potentials higher than any pyramid?
it's just called the Pyramid by Jan Hammer. I got it on cassette the whole soundtrack to this movie is on there. Look on itunes if you are a digital kid.
This one was my favourite by far. I remember I used to tape these shorts and I had an old tape filled with things like this, Fox's Peter Pan and Captain Simian, but the tape was so old it couldn't play anymore so I had to throw it out.
I fail to hear the noise you're referring to. Besides, the butterfly icon wasn't adopted until years after Short Circutz. So yeah, coincidence. Unless you want a tin foil hat, then you can believe there's a conspiracy or something.
I just listened to the "bing" you're referring to. To notice that and to make the correlation must mean you have a lot of time on your hands... It's a coincidence. Not a COINCIDENCE?! but just a regular everyday coincidence. No conspiracy, no theft, just fluke.
I used to love watching this on YTV!!! Loved it!! Favorite Short Circuitz clip, and I used to make sure not to miss it when I watched YTV. This really brought back memories, I'm glad I found it here.
yeah you can buy the VHS for less than a dollar on amazon. Otherwise, you are fucked, it's like the government is trying to hide this whole series from the general public. It's impossible finding a good copy of this on DVD that doesn't cost much.
That was fucking awesome. It's been around 10 years since I saw that, but the second I heard that beat, it all came flooding back. Now I know where that song that has been stuck in my head for 10 years comes from.
This is great stuff! Thanks for putting it up. I still get these songs stuck in my head every now and then. Brings back a lot of memories. Brilliant animations
"The caterpillar cannot fathom the butterly." I think mankind is evolving into something we can't fathom. This video is really interesting because it artistically communicates this. Spontaneous evolution to a new form.
Reminds me of late weekend nights with the lights dimmed waiting for reboot or what ever else was on YTV late at night. This kind of stuff reminds me of my beloved SNES for some reason. The good years of gaming.
I LOVE THIS STUFF! maybe the reason why these videos are so nostalgic compared to watching actual shows from YTV is because it was on during the breaks etc, so we got a chance to see it more. Brings back so many memories! thank you for posting! :):):)
Maybe because it was fucking fantastic animation for 1992, we were lucky to be shown such cutting-edge stuff. Kids these days only care about flash-quality crap or Spengbab.
Blame your daddy for fist-fucking you before blaming YTV.
I am 16 and was born in 1993. I never knew about this stuff until last December when I was looking on youtube. I now have all the vhs videos and cassetes. And yeah my generation is going to literally end the world.
I did too. Too bad art like this isn't respected at all, and is considered "passe" because it isn't the "latest and greatest" (which it WAS in 1994!).
I always thought the art was fantastic! As a kid it creeped me out a bit ... and it stuck with me at my age haha although I do recognize the beauty I still can't help but feel really weird watching this video
Sometimes the best art is the one that broadens out horizons and shakes us out of our comfort zone. Stuff like this definitely counted like that then, at least for you.
Before forming that conclusion you should do some more research. I also use to think 2012 was a lot of nonsense because of all the doomsdayers tainting the information pool on the subject.
If you look towards "new-age" scientists who use rational thought, observation and research to form conclusions you'll eventually see multiple groups of research that converge to form the same conclusion. Large changes in a +/- 2 year window around the date.
ive been looking for this clip for years...gives me shivers....really takes me back to my old hometown and the good ole days...wow...so happpy i found this....old ytv was the best....
I've been thinking about these clips throughout the years too. It's funny how these simple videos stick with you through time. Maybe because it was so radically different from anything else on tv.
I saw this in the original Siggraph video. And the sound track was different. I think this comes from the "mind's eye" series of videos. Which took great CG shorts of the 80s and paired them with some awful new age bullshit sound track. Most of the shorts were ruined... as some of the soundtracks were as interesting as the 3D graphics themselves.
There was a lot of research in generating and synchronizing the music with the video. And that was ruined by the pseudo-yanny crap music. Ugh...
renewer, I always thought she said "we all become the butterfly" or "we are all the butterfly" or something to that extent. I could be wrong, that's just how it sounds to me. I miss seeing these on YTV.
I have to be honest and say I totally respect and enjoy the imagery, but I think that the musical selection was lacking depth and it made it hard to really FEEL the heart of the imagery.
i think its the musical depth of this peice that moves us, try listeing to this on some premium speakers, the entire musical range comes out of the peice, its quite deep
these short circutz vids were on the air when i was in my cartoon watching prime so to speak. i was devestated when these were no longer on the air. i got pretty choked up when i watched this again after 18 years or so
Same here, i just found all of them agin , and ya after 14 years , i agree pretty emotional even though they are just little clips.... they hold alot of good memories :-)
I sympathise with everyone commenting on this video. Back in the day when YTV used to be good...along with a lot of other television back in the 90's, I used to watch television non-stop. The shows on YTV especially were so amazing...Reboot, Are You Afraid of the Dark?, Beast Wars, etc. These shows were amazing and make me remember the days when I was happy, care-free child. Oh how life has changed. I would give everything I have up to go back to those days.
wow, I have this video and I remember watching it when I was a kid and when your at that age of 5 or 6 the graphics to me were like nothing I've ever saw. I still love watching it, it brings back memories.
I can't believe how nostalgic this is. I can remember watching these things and eating cereal, or toast, or grilled cheese sandwiches, waiting for my shows to start. Man, do these things ever bring back memories...
omg, I know. The feeling really is difficult to explain isn't it. Not everyone realizes how strong an impression things make on us as children. The people who feel nostalgically connected to these videos are the only ones who I think really understands them.
Oh wow the memories....man did a quick search for the other 'short circutz' vids as well. Man Im at lost for words. I remember at one point hating these vids cause you'd have to watch through em to get to reboot or beasties LOL.
Now I just have this huge feeling of nostalgia...sigh
i always loved the short curcuits...especially this one...i was thinkin' about it 2day...and now after years and years i finally get 2 see it...thanks 4 uploading this...
Why can't T.V be this awesome now??? I remember when kids shows were awesome. Fresh Prince, Power Rangers, this stuff... the list goes on and on. Oh well.
It is truly amazing, the human mind. How something seemingly so insignificant can persist in entirety, with the first note of provocation my memories cascade, and string together like the notes of the melody itself, it all comes back. A beautiful work of art, I only now appreciate. Accompanied with nostalgia, it is moving. Thanks for posting!
Wow I remember these Short Circuit videos! This one was so cool and I loved the song [after the first note it instantly came back to me] but the part where the mummies are moving all funny and the people with leopard & zebra skin used to freak me out.

I did too. Too bad art like this isn't respected at all, and is considered "passe" because it isn't the "latest and greatest" (which it WAS in 1994!).
Mazryonh 3 years ago 2
I always thought the art was fantastic! As a kid it creeped me out a bit ... and it stuck with me at my age haha although I do recognize the beauty I still can't help but feel really weird watching this video
brownieyez 3 years ago
Sometimes the best art is the one that broadens out horizons and shakes us out of our comfort zone. Stuff like this definitely counted like that then, at least for you.
Mazryonh 3 years ago 2
Looking at this with the information that I have today it's clearly a video about the evolution of mankind. Probably links to the 2012 stuff.
kosai19 3 years ago
@kosai19
I think the 2012 stuff is bullshit. Something is going to happen randomly when we least expect it. It could be 2010 or 2020 who knows.
OneLeggedPuppies2010 1 year ago
@OneLeggedPuppies2010

Whatever fuck the world I don't care if we all die. At least I got to see this video.
OneLeggedPuppies2010 1 year ago
@OneLeggedPuppies2010 Agreed man. I'm fortunate enough to have grown up with this stuff, I'm so grateful. Fuck the 2000s.

ive been looking for this clip for years...gives me shivers....really takes me back to my old hometown and the good ole days...wow...so happpy i found this....old ytv was the best....
MetalHeadBanner 3 years ago
I've been thinking about these clips throughout the years too. It's funny how these simple videos stick with you through time. Maybe because it was so radically different from anything else on tv.
kosai19 3 years ago
I saw this in the original Siggraph video. And the sound track was different. I think this comes from the "mind's eye" series of videos. Which took great CG shorts of the 80s and paired them with some awful new age bullshit sound track. Most of the shorts were ruined... as some of the soundtracks were as interesting as the 3D graphics themselves.
There was a lot of research in generating and synchronizing the music with the video. And that was ruined by the pseudo-yanny crap music. Ugh...
javimahai 3 years ago
@javimahai
Fuck you the Mind's Eye series kicked ass and Jan Hammer made a beautiful soundtrack. What were you expecting Slayer?

Does anyone know what the woman says?
renewer 3 years ago
renewer, I always thought she said "we all become the butterfly" or "we are all the butterfly" or something to that extent. I could be wrong, that's just how it sounds to me. I miss seeing these on YTV.
EllawoodBlues 3 years ago
she says "we are of the butterfly"
Lazdinger 3 years ago
Lazdinger has it dead on.. im almost positive "we are of the butterfly" is referencing an old metaphor of a butterfly representing the soul..

omg the memories...I cant imagine being a kid in any other time period. Mid 80's till the end of the 90's, perfect timing.
and wow, how far has 3D animation come huh?
skullsrlove 3 years ago
I have to be honest and say I totally respect and enjoy the imagery, but I think that the musical selection was lacking depth and it made it hard to really FEEL the heart of the imagery.
CandyAcidReign 3 years ago
wat is this song from? its from something else rite? cuz i remember it very well....this video is also starting to come back to me
journey2beauty 3 years ago
I wish the part at 2:20 was longer, that could be made into such an awesome solo. The melody perfectly captures that leap.

There was one with Robert miles children as the background music i saw back in like 95 or 96.

I can't believe how nostalgic this is. I can remember watching these things and eating cereal, or toast, or grilled cheese sandwiches, waiting for my shows to start. Man, do these things ever bring back memories...

This is so nostalgic that it's incredibly depressing. Childhood was awesome.
ihaveacomputer 3 years ago 3
omg, I know. The feeling really is difficult to explain isn't it. Not everyone realizes how strong an impression things make on us as children. The people who feel nostalgically connected to these videos are the only ones who I think really understands them.
SpongyOLlama 3 years ago 4
Oh wow the memories....man did a quick search for the other 'short circutz' vids as well. Man Im at lost for words. I remember at one point hating these vids cause you'd have to watch through em to get to reboot or beasties LOL.
Now I just have this huge feeling of nostalgia...sigh

It is truly amazing, the human mind. How something seemingly so insignificant can persist in entirety, with the first note of provocation my memories cascade, and string together like the notes of the melody itself, it all comes back. A beautiful work of art, I only now appreciate. Accompanied with nostalgia, it is moving. Thanks for posting!
