I used to watch this show on cable TV in 1993. I loved it. Does anyone remember the channel? It wasn't like HBO or Showtime or some premium movie channel, but a regular cable channel like USA or something.
esta serie me encanto mucho cuando la pasaron en mi pais Venezuela, hace unos cuantos años, me gustaria volverla a ver, por fa no podrian traducirla al español,, se los agradeceria de corazon.
Haven't seen this since it was first broadcast circa 79 but remember this opening episode well. Recall an unseen chartcater called 'the screamer' used to haunt the dorms - a tormented soul driven completely mad by Kingsfield! Superb writing and acting all round.
I liked the TV show better than the movie because it developed the story in much more detail. While the first episode was mostly taken from the movie, subsequent episodes expanded the saga.
I love this film! Ever year when it's shown to a high school law class, it never fails to change the mind of a few who say, "I don't think I want to go to Law School after all". (Thank goodness the profs were not really like that). Thanks for posting.
This is practically recycled right out of the motion picture or is it the reverse? which came first the movie or the TV show? Kingsfeild is even more of a dick in this then the movie ? Is that supposed to be Bell behind and to the left of Hart? Is the Robot pimp in the TV show?
@rayyf69 The movie came first, then the TV show. There was a completely new cast of people playing Bell, the robot pimp, Heart ETC... Very few of the origional movie actors played in the TV series. To me, this was very odd. I still enjoyed the series anyway.
@ewueagle I really enjoyed the movie despite it being older then i am, the romance element i could do without but the law school stuff was entertaining. Would you say the TV series is better?
I liked the show in it's original run, but I didn't remember the Professor as being as such a prick. The way Houseman carried the role here: he's a prick and deserves to be called one. The proff is not filling the room with HIS intelligence, either.
You should post the ending of that chapter, I saw it when i was 12 and saw it in Spanish, now that I can understand few words of English I´m enjoying all the thing I had to see dubbed, I remember that for the next class Mr hart covered himself with a sheet and kingsfield had to uncover him, that was hilarious.
If the class assignments for the first day of class were posted, how come no one told Hart about this? It seems to me that the fault lies with the person who was supposed to tell all of the students about this, NOT with Hart.
@trwent . Ignorance of the law (or the process) is no defence. If someone WAS to tell Hart of the posted assignments and he still forgot would it be the fault of the person who told him for not doing it in such a way that Hart remembered, or the fault of Hart.?
He never knew of the assignments for one reason. He never bothered to find out. He is at fault.
To test this theory stick your hand into a hornets nest and find out what happens. no one need tell you beforehand to be the blame.
I LOVED this series on Showtime & am currently watching the 2nd season. I was thrilled when Shout Factory made it available on DVD. For those of you who question James Stephens' acting ability- he gets MUCH better as he develops his character.....vast improvement over this very first episode. Watch the whole first year & you will see what I mean.
The Ct ordered the doctor to pay for the damages - the difference between hairy hand and the promised perfect hand. Df argued that he should not be liable more than difference between burned hand and hairy hand. The court declined this theory based on expectation theory. Pt went to doctor expecting to have recovered healthy hand, not hairy hand.
K protects benefit of bargain- expectation and reliance interest. But remedy cases usually come at the very end of K class, not at first if in real.
well of course - but this guy has nothing on Hart from the original film. He is totally unconvincing and awkward.. that was all I was saying.. haha the way he says.. 'yes my name is ha-ha-heart..' makes me cringe
trial court gave damages for restitution... court of appeals gave expectation damages (better for hawkins)... no P&S though, all his P&S were a natural result of the surgery he contracted for.... least this is all how i remember it haha i guess i would have to check old 1L notes to be sure
today was also my first day in law school. My professor mentioned the movie version and referenced the part where the professor asks the kid a question, and after class is over he runs to the toilet to throw up. My professor then asked everyone in the class to say our name and one thing about us that no one else would know. He then said that we could tell people when they asked if we were called upon on our first day that we were and that we knew more about the answer than anyone in the class
Today was my first day in law school. In my contracts class, we covered Hawkins v. McGee first. At some point, this movie was mentioned, and this is what I find. Cool. Our professor wasn't as intense as this guy, but then again, none of us came to the lecture unprepared.
Kingsfield is asking this student and the class, what the doctor should pay. What the doctor should pay, for performing an operation that didn't quite turn out as exptected
But today, before Kingsfield and his class could have a discussion about what kind of damages the doctor might be liable for, it seems that Kingsfield and the class, would want to read over any paper-work or waivers the boy's parents signed, before the operation took place
That was a bit over the top. Then again, all I've seen for the last 20 years was the movie (about 30 times), so my expectations are pretty set for Kingsfield.
I was only ten or so when this was on TV, but remember it as a great show, I can recall bits of episodes and the characters very clearly. I see the first series is for sale on dvd on Amazon and am very tempted to buy. ewueagle it is a way cool thing to put on youtube ty!!
I never thought for a minute anyone would even look at this. I thought it was something cool to post on youtube. Good Lord, I am at 13000 views. I wonder if they put this series on air in syndication if it would be a hit. I bet people would love that.
@ewueagle I actually am going to use it for a "College Success" class for students at the Community College I teach at: an example in preparation, first impressions, and the need to bite your tongue (at times) when in a "dynamic professor's Kingdom" (uh, classroom). I just looked up The Paper Chase, and I was looking for the "Shroud" scene-and here it is! LOL! Excellent show, and thanks for the post!
@kolbek2001, I am glad you enjoyed this. I wanted to teach at a community college, but there is no place for me here in my home town of Spokane. I am happy to see that this video will be of some use to you. I used it a few times in my graduate work in education and adult training(M.Ed). I hope It continues to inspire others.

The film is a classic, but it was awesome we got to live with the beloved characters for 4 full seasons and develop further themes regarding education and ambition. And it had Houseman! It reached and inspired many.
I was watching this movie and making out with my girlfriend on the couch when all of a sudden she gently unzipped my Levis, pulled out my very hard Mr. Wiggly and gave me my very first blow job. After about five minutes and fifty five seconds, I came like a bucket full of silver dollars, wow!!! Let me tell you, it felt REAL GOOD!!! Does any body know if that's about the right timing? I don't know if that was too fast or not? I held back for as long as I could. I'm 19 and she's 19 too, Bogart
The series was good, but they made Kingsfield too loveable.
BTW..the reasoning of Hawkins v. McGee that Hart gives regarding damages (value of defendant's unperformed performance less benefit accrued to the plaintiff) is not that far off: it relies on a line of cases going back to Hadley v. Baxendale.
Igualmente yo me hice abogado aqui en EEUU por esta serie, pero primero tuve que aprender bien el Ingles desde que el castellano era mi lengua madre. La luche bien bien duro pero lo logre.
I remember this series well. When it was scheduled to go off the air,I even wrote a letter to CBS President William Plain to try to keep it from being canceled. John Houseman's portrayal of Kingsfield is classic.
