Berserker is an old Norse word. Berr means a bear and as for the -serker part it rly comes from serkr meaning shirt. Berserkers are said to have been wearing bear skins in battle. They also used some mashrooms and herbals to get drugged and enter into berserking rage-feeling no pain and no remorse. Some are even said to have been so bludlust that they knew no friend from foe, only targets :) The Ulfhednar on the other hand were the most elite of the berserkers - the so called Oden's elite

Actually, the "bear" part is not so undisputed, although English wiki sais so. But : Old Norse for "bear" is "bjorn" nor "ber". So, the word's inventor Þorbjörn Hornklofi borrowed it from old german, or:

"ber-" existed, too, and meaned " to bear as in to carry". So it might mean "shirt bearer". Which sounds reasonable because Þorbjörn, seamed to use them synonymous to "men clad in wolf skins"

Or it could still come from "berr" meaning " bare", or "shirtless", which fits some pictures of them.
