Brasília, our capital, has circa 4,000,000 people and it was founded 50 years ago! São Paulo with almost 20,000,000 people is the largest city of southern hemisphere and we have of course Rio de Janeiro :).

Russia has MASSIVE oil reserves, probably even more than is in Iraq, Russia also has Coal, Diamond, Silver, Platinum, Uranium mines, and more that what i just mentioned here
the population of a city doesnt necessarily mean a good economy, like look at Mexico City, they have the city with the most population in the world, they arent rich, LA has a massive population too, but its not doing that well...

@lisanecesita1aparato actually as of now Spain has probably already lost that place. the imf 2010 nominal gdp estimates has Spain 11 (replaced by Canada and Russia) and the cia factbook puts Spain's exports 16 (far behind Canada and Russia). These stats are important because they are the only ones that Spain can use to support is case. it is not a major energy, resource producer and none of the major economies completely depend on it in many ways.

@buddycrashin China needs to grow fast to even stay in the world power discussions. its exports are about the same as Germany's, its economic value at market prices is 4 times smaller than the US's and it has one of the lowest gdp per capita in the world. India needs to catch up to Canada first (nominal gdp is still behind and Canada is expected to keep growing at a healthy pace) and exports are not even comparable)

The US is currently basing its growth and scale of economy mainly on consumption based on borrowed money (not investment or profits from trade like the EU and China). So the EU (much thanks to Germany) and Chinese figures on the scale of their economies indicate something positive for those countries, whereas the US figures stem from the execution needle stung into the American people by the Federal Reserve. The US was surpassed a long time ago.
