Even though 50 something yr old Mercer's better Boxing days were well over 15 years ago, he's still a former Boxing Olympic Gold Medalist and former Boxing Heavyweight Champ. Boxers punch STRAIGHTER, not necessarily faster. Boxer's punches have far superior technique, and they have to be faster, because there are less openings. The Spartans found out that boxing was the best means of self-defense by fighting without ANY rules and finding out the best style.
@Mindstamina Wrestling and BJJ are excellent to have in a street fight, I mean, I train in BJJ, first street fight I got in, pulled out a flying triangle and it was over. Though, my back hurt like HELL after I got it. However, Muay Thai is VERY successful (probably why I chose it over boxing) in MMA and on the street. From personal experience, there is NO worse feeling than being in a Muay Thai instructor's clinch. But boxing is VERY good. Just look at BJ Penn and Nick Diaz. You need both though

The only way a striker with no takedown defense can escape a wrestlers wrath is by running away, but once he starts positioning himself for a punch, he is going down. There were many great strikers that learned takedown defense and succeeded, but there were more failures than anything else. Training in grappling and submission defense will turn you in to a mixed martial artist, no longer a pure boxer.

You apparently do not know how (reality) works. World class strikers have gotten taken down without even being able to land one punch, since the grappler shoots in at the boxer in an impossible position and angle, which makes it implausible that the striker can land a knock out blow. Another thing, MMA fighters can lure in the boxer by pretending to strike with them, putting them in a more vulnerable position. Boxers can win in a boxing match though.

Igor is a kickboxer, just because he uses his hands does not mean he is a boxer. Just because a wrestler uses his hands does not mean hes a boxer, just because a wrestler uses his knees does not mean he is a muay Thai expert. The examples you are giving me are exceptions to the rule, 9/10 grapplers defeat strikers. Tim made the mistake of trying to box a pro boxer. He should have used his wrestling and superior mma skills as Kimbo Slice did to beat Ray Mercer. Video is alittle misleading. It was supposed to be a boxing match but they couldn't get sanctioning so they had to do it in an MMA style event. This was not a boxing match, this was a full out mma match with grappling.

MMA is awesome I love it but it cant compare to boxing. Boxing really is the sweet science and when done right its great to watch. I take nothing away from MMA fighters there as tough as nails and entertaining as hell. I just think that there's more skill involved in boxing there two different sports really. In my opinion as a fight fanatic if you took a professional boxer in his prime (Mike TYSON ETC.) they would literally kill some of these MMA guys they usually don't have great hand skills

You say the fighter chooses the style. I think the style chooses the fighter. If an Aikido fighter fought a boxer, the boxer would win. If a boxer fought a wrestler, even though you'd disagree, the wrestler would win. I'd say that if you trained it all, but stuck with your style, you're doing good.

Even though 50 something yr old Mercer's better Boxing days were well over 15 years ago, he's still a former Boxing Olympic Gold Medalist and former Boxing Heavyweight Champ. It's hard to compete against someone with that experience when all you really have on your resume is wrestling and MMA.

@Mindstamina Wrestling and BJJ are excellent to have in a street fight, I mean, I train in BJJ, first street fight I got in, pulled out a flying triangle and it was over. Though, my back hurt like HELL after I got it. However, Muay Thai is VERY successful (probably why I chose it over boxing) in MMA and on the street. From personal experience, there is NO worse feeling than being in a Muay Thai instructor's clinch. But boxing is VERY good. Just look at BJ Penn and Nick Diaz. You need both though

A pure boxer will aways get his ass kicked by a pure grappler, but one needs to learn takedown defense in order to survive, but even then they still get taken down. There were many great strikers that learned takedown defense and succeeded, but there were more failures than anything else. Training in grappling and submission defense will turn you in to a mixed martial artist, no longer a pure boxer.

You apparently do not know how (reality) works. World class strikers have gotten taken down without even being able to land one punch, since the grappler shoots in at the boxer in an impossible position and angle, which makes it implausible that the striker can land a knock out blow. Another thing, MMA fighters can lure in the boxer by pretending to strike with them, putting them in a more vulnerable position. Boxers can win in a boxing match though.

All you need to know is seconds 15 - 18 to understand why he lost... idiot tried to box a boxer. MMA doesn't have much respect for this guy either, especially after this fight... Even Jens Pulver called it in another youtube video stating how stupid it was to try & box a pro boxer such as Mercer... hes gonna get KO'ed. It was an MMA match not a boxing match. I just hope rampage doesn't end up make the same mistake with Toney. He's fat & old but he can still throw a big punch just like Mercer.

Tim made the mistake of trying to box a pro boxer. He should have used his wrestling and superior mma skills as Kimbo Slice did to beat Ray Mercer. Tim is a far superior fighter than Kimbo, and Kimbo took down Ray and submitted him quickly into the first round. Kimbo only had about 6 months mma training. Kimbo was smart enough to not stand up and trade leather with Mercer.

Video is alittle misleading. It was supposed to be a boxing match but they couldn't get sanctioning so they had to do it in an MMA style event. This was not a boxing match, this was a full out mma match with grappling.

MMA is awesome I love it but it cant compare to boxing. Boxing really is the sweet science and when done right its great to watch. I take nothing away from MMA fighters there as tough as nails and entertaining as hell. I just think that there's more skill involved in boxing there two different sports really. In my opinion as a fight fanatic if you took a professional boxer in his prime (Mike TYSON ETC.) they would literally kill some of these MMA guys they usually don't have great hand skills

I'll agree that people from the south are more scared to get hit for some reason, i'm from Georgia myself. But regardless of my, probably bias, opinion, i've found that a pure grappler will beat a pure striker any day, just look at UFC 1. I'll agree that i underestimate striking, though, and that's why i'll never go anywhere with fighting.

@xlilnetx I'll agree theres many different types of boxing, but they all have the same type of implication. There are many styles because of different regions of this Earth. How is this relevant? You say the fighter chooses the style. I think the style chooses the fighter. If an Aikido fighter fought a boxer, the boxer would win. If a boxer fought a wrestler, even though you'd disagree, the wrestler would win. I'd say that if you trained it all, but stuck with your style, you're doing good.
