  • i watch and listen to him for over an hour now. i think god is like this. or he's like god. or he is god. i don't know

  • Eargasm.

  • such epic dismounts

  • @zalxder heh heh... dismounts... heh heh

  • he makes it look so easy....... it isn't :(

  • I Agree better than YO YO Ma's BRAVO!!!!!!

  • does he have this memorized?

  • @ihategeorgedubyabush yes, he has it memorized.

  • And I had the nerve to ask for a transcription for bass clarinet. :3 I'll never learn them all!

  • I love the way he moves his fingers! 8D~ *Drools* <3

I hope I become as good as him someday!

  • Just.. EXCELLENT!

  • O_O Que es estoooo¡¡?........

  • Amazing !!!

  • Yo-Yo Ma's performance of this piece really puts power, one might even say aggression, into the cello which makes for a good listen but I think I may like Maisky's even more because just the all the careful articulation he puts into it makes for a wonderful gentle, allegro piece.

  • his arm moves so perfect its like hes a robot ;_; how much does he practice you think?

  • This is the sound and art of the Russian school in cello. Truly amazing! Watch Rostropovich's example and compare differences and similarities.

  • BIG FAT SOUND!!!

  • Yes its hard on the double bass you have to play it an octave higher and play a lot of over tunes also the bowing makes it difficult i recommend playing it on the cello not the bass Rostropovich describe it as being the toiler of Bach so that means its not easy

  • he makes it look so simple.. *sigh*

  • so what?..

we still were (Thank God) HumanBeings...no Machines! ;-)

  • that piece was VERY difficult for me to learn on my doublebass

I was lerning it for 2 years XD

  • it seems to be hard anyway

  • I bet it would be. Was it all the shifting? Or was it all in weird positions or sommat? I play bass too, so I'm just curious. C:

  • I think the bow movements are harder than the shifting. If you shift properly, shifting if no harder than first position. Staccato, while slurring, is a difficult thing to master, and Maisky here is a fine example.

  • This is a very difficult piece to play. it is written in 12/8 time and in E-flat! A lovely, dance-like interpretation.

  • I'm surprised his hair doesn't get in the way. Beautiful music, though. I like his suite no 1 prelude better than Yo Yo Ma's. This guy is incredible.

  • IS TRUE....

  • Marvellous performance in Italy from the late '80s.

Also Maisky's newest version of Bach's violoncello Suites, is absolutely wonderful, with magnificent improvised embellishments.

  • Where can one find these recordings?

  • Great bowing but I've seen better. Personally I'll stick to Rostropovich for this piece. Maisky's is too romantic and not enough rhythm. The bowing helps out but not enough. Rostropovich clearly shows spaces in an unexaggerated manner. This is all my opinion of course so no flaming please.

  • One of the things that I like about Maisky is that all of his interpretations of these suites is that his way of playing them gives them a common ground, whereas the individual pieces are quite different from each other and are very individualistic.

  • Rostropovich's interpretation doesn't sound like a Gigue at all. Too much legato, a Gigue isn't supposed to flow, it has to be jumpy and pointy. I've never heard of Maiski until today, but I think he's doing a great job in showing us what a Gigue is supposed to sound like. If you look at what the dance steps look like, you will understand that Rostropovich's rendition has missed the point entirely. It may sound nice, but it's not a Gigue.

  • Maisky's version is not THAT jumpy. Like around 0:13 to 0:16, Rostropovich makes it stand out MUCH better. The fact that a gigue should sound like a dance mvt is the LEAST important fact to consider here. In addition, Rostro. is not using legato, probably the opposite. He tried to creat spaces without stacatto. There should be a balance between 'jumpy' and flow. I can see your viewpoint clearly but a gigue should not sound like a gigue, but an interpretation.

  • i want to learn to play the cello... what wonderful music that it produces...

  • hmmm... strange fingerings... a bit out of tune.... but very interesting interpretation, and great bowings/articulations

  • and I just love how YOU killed the magic of it. Thanks

  • Then you have no appreciation for music whatsoever.

  • By the way, with regards to the pin he uses. I have heard that many authentic cello players refrain from using it as (so they claim) it makes a lot of the sound get absorbed by the ground. To what extent is this true?

  • this is one of my favorite movements from the suites. gmontes42 is right how it just makes you want to smile and dance.

  • prick!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Hey common now, he does make a point. Don't be so close minded people.

  • The musician doesn't have to express himself in exact feelings like hapines or sadness, and even if this is a gigue it it doesn't mean the player or bach ment this peace to be all "happy" or "sad". Also, not all expression is seen on the outside
