Great tutorial! I've been looking for the functionality of that clip...I've been making them into smart objects containing the associated adjustment layers...yeah... Not sure if it's possible, but is there a way to make separate smart filter masks on a smart object without duplicating the layer? Thanks!
Wow. Wish I knew this for some of my class projects. It would have saved a lot of space since I dupe a lot of layers for every effect I do to save the previous.
Duplicate the original picture and use the copy for your project. To keep the original picture, just lock it and/or make it invisible in the bottom-right corner. :)
I completely agree non-destructive is the way to go. I've been using it since Photoshop 6 before smart filters. though the most common filter I used was unsharp mask which I got around using a highpass overlay trick
Those are cool, I rarely use smart filters, little bit more the adjustment layers but I do use ALOT of layer mask. I also work with a copy of original picture and do copies along the time if I think its necessary so I just delete the layer if it goes wrong XD. Great tuts!
They can also with simply line work done with the pencil tool, without using the pen tool or previously selecting anything like the lasso tool, from a single layer sketch out their character, then click the clipping mask tool once and it seamlessly selects ONLY the insides of their drawing, allowing them to use the brush tool to paint large swaths of color in this single layer without any going outside of the lines of their sketch.
To go more in depth. The artist will sketch out their entire drawing and "ink" it in a single layer. They then create a second layer and apply a single solid color (usually blue for shading) across the entire image. Then without using the pen tool they will use the clipping mask tool to select the figure they've drawn from the background and have only that character colored in, and will then use the eraser tool to add highlights and burn tool to darken areas.
One effect I'd really like to know more about is using the clipping mask on drawings. I see all of the major digital artists when coloring in a sketch JUST use the clipping mask to select certain parts of the drawing and apply large areas of color (usually deep blues they turn to a darken or color burn filter and then adjust / erase to apply the effect). I've never figured out how they do this, and it is NOT LIKE HOW YOU DO CLIPPING MASKS WITH TEXT! Can't stress that enough.
excuse me, i thought this would be the best place to ask fopr help... when i change my brush size by holding alt key+moving the mouse there is no colored preview... its quite annoying with the strengh... i activated brush preview +opengl but nothing changed, somebody could help??
@PiRhoRemix Absolutely. If you notice when he placed a smart-filter onto his smart-layer, a layer-mask box shows up beside the Smart Filters. Just create your gradient in there, and any filters below will respond to the layer mask just like a layer would respond to a layer mask. White is visible, black is not.
@Smidd1995 If you wanted to fix something you did looong time ago, its much quicker to have layer masks and edit those, than to go back and "start over" from that thing you wanted to fix.
Hi, Iceflow. I've been following you for some time now, and I really love your tutorials. They're some of the best on youtube. But the only thing I can't fiqure out is how to get cool colors. If you paint with a regular brush and color, it's a something you can do in paint... how do I get really cool colors which you see in top professional edits?
great tutorial! when i first started with photoshop back in the late 90's there were no easy tutorials like this available. if only i can go back in time and teach myself what was taught in this tutorial it would have made my college life easier. =)

@minxamo Yep! When you create the Smart Filter, it comes with a Layer Mask already. You'll see the white box to the left of "Smart Filters" in the Layers Panel. Paint black to hide some of the blur.
Thanks for that, quick little clarifier on non destructive editing. Your videos are always packed with info; but I would like to know more about the drawbacks so I could anticipate problems. I assume file size and compatibility with Lightroom could be an issue.
@ewingeric bc some stuff can only be performed directly into the image, like the liquidfy tool which he mentioned in the video. Most beginners in photoshop dont know about smart filters, vector mask, or adjustments layers. This is very essential if you are to take photoshop seriously into a more professional level. otherwise just do everything into the original image and lose the original pixel information.
@looknfortruth when I pick the eraser tool I can't hold leftclick to erase. Everytime I click just a litle bit gets erased and I have to click lik 30 times to make a "hole" in the picture
@BandSniipeZ Top left corner, also make sure that tablet pressure controls and airbrush mode are unchecked just to make sure its not them making it go weird ;)

my main tip is to always work on a copy of the background and not the original, just in case you forget to protect something, you have a back up of the original image
