  • What I do is that I just use lots of layers, and make one change in each layer.

  • baH baH BoObies!!

  • Great tutorial! I've been looking for the functionality of that clip...I've been making them into smart objects containing the associated adjustment layers...yeah... Not sure if it's possible, but is there a way to make separate smart filter masks on a smart object without duplicating the layer? Thanks!

  • 1:08 like stewie: ruind :D

  • Neat!

  • thanks!! love you man! xD

  • can you give us the photos you use in the description?

  • Wow. Wish I knew this for some of my class projects. It would have saved a lot of space since I dupe a lot of layers for every effect I do to save the previous.

  • tip: don't just reply to the haters :)

  • boobs

  • wheres the button to make it only apply to layer below in cs3?

  • @LaveaFirmis Shift + Alt + Click Between the Layers :D

  • @KasanovaX11 Ye i use that too

  • Your project could be rueened.

  • Why should one use smart filters instead of creating a new layer? From what I understand it takes up the same space.

  • Duplicate the original picture and use the copy for your project. To keep the original picture, just lock it and/or make it invisible in the bottom-right corner. :)

    Keep it simply :p

  • Fantastic information, thank you for posting this!

  • I cried when you painted over her boobs.

  • What about SmartObjects? :p

  • I knew everything except that clipping trick! Thank you!

  • @mineofGod agreed, that tip alone is excellent!

  • A tip: Duplicate important layers before you make major changes. : )

  • I completely agree non-destructive is the way to go. I've been using it since Photoshop 6 before smart filters. though the most common filter I used was unsharp mask which I got around using a highpass overlay trick

  • can you do a tutorial on video layers???

  • Those are cool, I rarely use smart filters, little bit more the adjustment layers but I do use ALOT of layer mask. I also work with a copy of original picture and do copies along the time if I think its necessary so I just delete the layer if it goes wrong XD. Great tuts!

  • Great tutorial again, thanks a lot! Please keep it up and definitly do longer ones, not only 2-3 minutes.

  • They can also with simply line work done with the pencil tool, without using the pen tool or previously selecting anything like the lasso tool, from a single layer sketch out their character, then click the clipping mask tool once and it seamlessly selects ONLY the insides of their drawing, allowing them to use the brush tool to paint large swaths of color in this single layer without any going outside of the lines of their sketch.

  • To go more in depth. The artist will sketch out their entire drawing and "ink" it in a single layer. They then create a second layer and apply a single solid color (usually blue for shading) across the entire image. Then without using the pen tool they will use the clipping mask tool to select the figure they've drawn from the background and have only that character colored in, and will then use the eraser tool to add highlights and burn tool to darken areas.

  • One effect I'd really like to know more about is using the clipping mask on drawings. I see all of the major digital artists when coloring in a sketch JUST use the clipping mask to select certain parts of the drawing and apply large areas of color (usually deep blues they turn to a darken or color burn filter and then adjust / erase to apply the effect). I've never figured out how they do this, and it is NOT LIKE HOW YOU DO CLIPPING MASKS WITH TEXT! Can't stress that enough.

  • excuse me, i thought this would be the best place to ask fopr help... when i change my brush size by holding alt key+moving the mouse there is no colored preview... its quite annoying with the strengh... i activated brush preview +opengl but nothing changed, somebody could help??

  • The tutorial is really great, your explanation is very good to, and I don't wan't to be an ass or smthn but your voice is so getting on my ears :D

  • Is there a way to create a blur with a gradient? ie light to heavy blur from left to right?

  • @PiRhoRemix Absolutely. If you notice when he placed a smart-filter onto his smart-layer, a layer-mask box shows up beside the Smart Filters. Just create your gradient in there, and any filters below will respond to the layer mask just like a layer would respond to a layer mask. White is visible, black is not.

  • @PiRhoRemix

Yes -- apply the blur to the whole image (on a layer, of course), then add a mask and use a black and white gradient just on the layer mask.

  • I love nik Software too!! My favorite plug-in :)

  • Where did you got your photo?

  • nice...

  • @IceflowStudios is it free?

  • Wouldn't it be easier to just copy the layer?

  • @RH104 No, because then you are not able to reedit them later on.

  • The only thing I knew was Layer Masks.

  • @Smidd1995 You can't undo if you've closed the document.

  • @IceflowStudios ahh ok i see now i should of re-watched the video thanks m8

  • @IceflowStudios Chuck Norris can.

  • @Smidd1995 You also cannot undo one thing without undoing a ton of things you did after it.

  • @Smidd1995 If you wanted to fix something you did looong time ago, its much quicker to have layer masks and edit those, than to go back and "start over" from that thing you wanted to fix.

  • This guy is my hero!! :D

  • @TeamKamikazeFPS make them eat a lot no? :D

  • You didn't need to use that bikini model but the reason you did is why I love these tutorials. ;)

  • Hi, Iceflow. I've been following you for some time now, and I really love your tutorials. They're some of the best on youtube. But the only thing I can't fiqure out is how to get cool colors. If you paint with a regular brush and color, it's a something you can do in paint... how do I get really cool colors which you see in top professional edits?

  • Show us how to x-ray pictures so we can see through clothing xD

  • @BlazingsNL for that you have to work on the pics a bit longer and do lot of research :P

  • @MrShoy I know how to x-ray :P Just curious how this guy would do it haha

  • You're awesome

  • Thanks helpd me :)

  • this might be basic or kinda noob tips but are so useful that you should keep them always in mind.

  • I don't need in Photoshop, but I still watch your videos.

  • great tutorial! when i first started with photoshop back in the late 90's there were no easy tutorials like this available. if only i can go back in time and teach myself what was taught in this tutorial it would have made my college life easier. =)

  • 1- what if u paint with any color other than black & white on the layer mask ?

2- how do u go back multiple steps in history using the keyboard, cuz ctrl+z only goes back one step ? thx

  • @elaraby741 dont know abt ur first question but the answer for the second is ctl+alt+z

  • @elaraby741 1. You can't. You can only choose either black or white on a layer mask. 2. Ctrl+Alt+Z (PC)

  • thats not even a bikini!! :P

  • Thank You so much for posting this video, it has really helped me out. =o)

  • thank u

  • Where Can I Get That Wallpaper?

  • I fell in love with the layer mask

  • Very useful. thanks.

  • i assume ilovedagreenday has 2 accounts...

  • @dodoz44 Why do you assume that?

  • Who the F**k are the two people who disliked this?

  • I can't concentrate on the editing if I keep staring at the damn pic the whole time

  • Excellent video I didn't know you could clip adjustment layers to just one layer. That has been a great help to me.

  • Hey, can you please do a tutorial about how to unlock the background layer, so that one can put another layer underneath it. Thanks!

  • @TheTechFish Hold Alt (PC) or Cmd (Mac), then double click on the background layer. Bam, unlocked. Hope that helps.

  • @vinnygangsta Or just double clicking works

  • @TheTechFish just double click it and rename it "layer 0" or whatever. Then you can put layers underneath it.

  • Thank for the tutorial Tom XD

  • Dude why do you get so much shit for awesome tutorials?

  • awesome :D !! can you do advanced tutorials please ?? digital painting maybe ??

  • ...then again, covert for smart filters is pretty awesome too!

  • that clipping layer icon tip is the best thing i've ever seen on youtube.

these short vids are extremely awesome and helpful, and even worth wating for the ads to end at the beginning so i can watch them.

  • why brush the boobs like that

  • I have no idea how people could live without non-destructive editing. Honestly. It is my savior.

  • love ur tutorials, there great!;D

  • Always good tips. Thanks

  • Thanks, never knew about smart filters!

  • @ilovedagreenday The worst tutorials are the ones with no audio. How do you know what's going on if there's no talking?

  • @IceflowStudios Haha I'm sorry, I'm just being obnoxious. I really liked this tutorial though. Lots of good stuff in here.

  • @ilovedagreenday That's the most stupid thing I've ever heard.

  • @ilovedagreenday clearly someone doesnt know what the mute button is...

  • @ilovedagreenday shut the fuck up

  • @ilovedagreenday You are dummy. Point blank...

  • @ilovedagreenday You sir, are an idiot.

  • @ilovedagreenday if you want to look , there's a mute button :D

  • @ilovedagreenday *facepalm* god your a fucking idiot. thats like going to school and having the teacher write on the board no explaining shit. then give you a test. people are so stupid sometimes.

  • @xXxhalomanxXx Chill bro, I was just joking.

  • @ilovedagreenday You tube has a mute button if you don't like it =D

  • @ilovedagreenday Are you retarded or something?

  • @PablotheFEAR No, but thanks for asking.

  • @ilovedagreenday

You should turn down your volume and not listen to these videos. It's a picture. You don't need to listen, just look.

  • @ilovedagreenday Mute it.:D

  • you.. have,,, one of the best commentary voices... ever!!!!!

  • Thanks, Tom!

  • say if iwas edit i pic like that... what if i dont want the person or bject blurred or colored or fixed in anyway way?!

  • say if iwas edit i pic like that... what if i dont want the person or bject blurred or colored or fixed in anyway way?!

  • or... just save it as a .psd and copy and move layers around.... -_-

  • I have a question, I'm a web designer. I use the slice tool a lot, but everytime I click on it, there is no way to get rid of the slices, those blue lines don't disappear no matter what I do. I have to create a new document to get rid of them. Whats the way around this?

  • Nice tutorial but it would be nice if you did a tutorial we could follow so we have something to show for it at the end. Also it would give us a chance to try out techniques you use.

  • You know, I don't even have Photoshop ( anymore ), but I still enjoy watching these videos! :)

  • smart filters are hot!

  • whoops! i "accidentally" clicked on the ad in the beginning :P

  • How did u get photoshop? Did u buy it

  • @TheSDavies93 no he made a tutorial on how to get it for free /watch?v=XGeG0lx_yGg

  • @TheSDavies93 how to get free photoshop -

download the trial from the adobe site.

    download a photoshop keygen.

Enter a key from the keygen in the key register thing.

    TADA!

  • please do an advanced 3D tutorial

  • Hey..Man you r doing a real gud job.......a few days back i knew nothing about ps but only through ur tutorials m now able to do a lot with my images. Thanks a lot frommy side and also from many others like me........Keep it up.

  • Holycrap you make good tutorials! AND i really learnt some stuff from this :D

  • is there any way to use layer masks on smart filters, so that you only blur part on the image?

  • @minxamo Yep! When you create the Smart Filter, it comes with a Layer Mask already. You'll see the white box to the left of "Smart Filters" in the Layers Panel. Paint black to hide some of the blur.

  • @minxamo yes, the white square on the smart filter should be a layer mask as far as I know.

  • do you know where that clipping icon is in cs3? found away around it but that button would be far easier. Thanks

  • Comment removed

  • can you do a advanced texture creation please :)

  • I like cookies!

  • the voice of Yoda

  • Awesome. :D

  • Thanks for that, quick little clarifier on non destructive editing. Your videos are always packed with info; but I would like to know more about the drawbacks so I could anticipate problems. I assume file size and compatibility with Lightroom could be an issue.

  • Great video Thanks!!!!

  • If they have things such as "Adjustment Layers" and "Smart Filters" then why does Photoshop even give you the option to not use them??

  • @ewingeric congrats, youve won an award for the most useless comment on a ps tut

  • @ewingeric bc some stuff can only be performed directly into the image, like the liquidfy tool which he mentioned in the video. Most beginners in photoshop dont know about smart filters, vector mask, or adjustments layers. This is very essential if you are to take photoshop seriously into a more professional level. otherwise just do everything into the original image and lose the original pixel information.

  • very helpful! Good job! I used to destroy the image, but now I won't ;)

  • great tutorial, but could you make more advanced ones again?

  • Respond to this video...Have you sent in any requests? I typically make videos based on what people request.

  • @IceflowStudios i think that was a request but hey you know how to make a brightness change?

i dont know how to nivelate the light levels

  • wow, great tutorial! Thanks

  • Very nice!

  • seeing the thumbnail i though it was about avatar or something.!

  • Easy and informative . I love you ice .

  • You are so cool :-D

  • i have learn´d so much from you mate

  • My process

    LAYERS LAYERS LAYERS

    Shift click > Duplicate layers

    Merge

  • CTRL+Z,CTRL+ALT+Z-Short-cut keys to undo.

    CTRL+J-Duplicate

  • Hahaha at 3:30 he instinctively goes for the boobs!

  • you forgot the most important one... smart object ;)

  • I have a problem, every time I want to erase something I have to leftclick to erase, I can't hold it in, so I'm getting really tired in my finger.

    Please help me with this!

  • @BandSniipeZ not sure what you mean,if you explain a bit better i will and im sure others will try to help you

  • @looknfortruth when I pick the eraser tool I can't hold leftclick to erase. Everytime I click just a litle bit gets erased and I have to click lik 30 times to make a "hole" in the picture

  • @BandSniipeZ make sure the opacity is set to 100% ;)

  • @MrOllzinator where can I change that?

  • @BandSniipeZ Top left corner, also make sure that tablet pressure controls and airbrush mode are unchecked just to make sure its not them making it go weird ;)

  • @BandSniipeZ you can adjust your erasers opacity/size ect, click on eraser then goto the top left, hit the drop bar then adjust to suit, hope this helps you a little

  • Photoshop advice : DUPLICATE, DUPLICATE, DUPLICATE. That is all.

  • Noo! We don't like Guasian Blur on this photo!! :o

  • OMG LOOK A THIS RESOLUOTION *-*

  • How do you record your iPhone or iPad's screen? Like in your other video.

  • helps a ton for certification ++

  • Nice!!!! :D

  • THANK YOU!!!!!!!

I always hated how my adjustmen layers would go on everything else and i would have a screwed up background after working on finding it and perfecting it for hours

  • thanks! layer mask is something i seldom use, but i'll be sure to use them more often in the future.

  • Niceeee

  • my main tip is to always work on a copy of the background and not the original, just in case you forget to protect something, you have a back up of the original image

  • @KristinaArtSeeTV That's what I useally do aswell ;)

  • Your videos are very instructive and professional. Keep up your great work :) !

  • cool

  • 1rd

  • Love your tutorials, been learning quite a lot from them. Thanks !

  • @dsm1891 Mmmm boobs
