  • I would seriously learn how to farm those bees!! And then sell some of the honey to make money for unexpected expenses like health/dental care? lol :P

  • jesus, i would love 10 acers!!!!!!!!

  • I think Sue and my wife would get along incredibly well. Both are headstrong.

  • mission27 - the whole point is to not give up the benefits of modern life. But to fire central control. Here in South Africa we have a power crisis, a looming water nightmare and government is determined to tax us middle class types until we drop. All the cash seems to go to african fat cats.

So I'm thinking off grid is the answer for me. But, like Les, I want to retain the luxuries I'm used to.

Yes, I want my cake and I want to eat it too!

  • cell phones? Riding mowers? Weedeaters? Power? This video is total horseshit when it comes to "off the grid". This video should be titled 'Sort of off the grid but not really, more just living out in the forest."

    FAIL

  • Can someone tell me what the hell that thing Les Stroud has on his arm is???

  • Damn I wish my dad was an adventurer like Les and I could experience this. Personally I would have all of my guns with me just in case things go bump in the night.

  • i love it when he says "fact is"

  • Does anyone know what they mean by "hydro"? It doesn't sound like they mean hydro power. Probably some Canadian term

  • @ambigera Canada has a power company referred to as "Hydro", and it has become a slang term for electricity, so when these Canucks call it hydro, I'm 95% sure it's electricity they talk about. :)

  • @ambigera im Canadian and i have never heard anyone say hydro at all

  • what about school? don't his kids need to go to school?

  • If your off the grid, self sufficent.

Can dress yourself, feed yourself and provide yourself shelter.

    Why would you need school...

It's a life style that needs no government interference.

  • well there are privet schools too. But your missing the point here, education is not just needed so you could get a job later on to pay for your electricity bills. Education is important in developing your personality in expanding your interests. Sure Les wife can teach them some basic things to her kids but that's about it just basics. Depriving them of proper state or privet education is depraving them of choice. What do they want to do in life who do they want to be?

  • @Animatiotron, agree to disagree.

Being taking away from mother nature and off your land for 8 hours a day is depriving on of choice.

I agree education will develope personality, but so will living off the land.

If we want to be able to sustain the future population mark my words, we will have to get back to ours roots and get back in touch with mother earth.

    Peace

    God Speed

  • @Animatiotron

A phrase like "Proper State" or "Private" education has its own set of worries.

Believe me, the worries/serious threats of the current day "education" trump the lack of "interaction".

I went through public education and it had its share of unforeseen "challenges" here in Detroit.

  • Ultimately you will never be able to crate a perfect system. So i guess that even poor education is still better than no education. What kind of interaction will the kids have in a home school anyway? They will be able to look at trees and sun all day, brilliant :\ What about Chemistry lab, computer lab, library , P.E(basketball court, football field, etc.) school plays not to mention interaction with other kids.

  • True, but you'll be able to control the quality of the teaching and keep the rhetoric to a minimum.

Foregoing Chemistry lab, computers are everywhere. Programs out there trump the teachers infinitesimal input. A well written software learning program does not need to wade through the other 30+ students.

The mother can go through the lessons before hand to get an understanding. There are a good number of web sites devoted to home schooling & the sharing of ideas.

  • The girl is involved in dance and the boy is involved in sports. As for daily P.E. during school a good basketball hoop or bike ride around the newly made bike course would be a dream.

Having 150 acres allows for Touch Football, Catch, Tennis, Baseball, Rugby, Jogging... need I go on?

1 hour of P.E. would go by quickly. The kids would get a formula of how many circuits to make on the bike course. Strapping on separate Ipods and getting on Bikes would be a great taste of freedom.

  • You crack me up. First you have a pic of a Marxist commie on your profile. Second you spout off about "education" but you can't even spell. You come across as a narrow minded person. Why don't you do some research before you claim that your way is the only way. At least here in the US more than 4 million are educate at home and over 93 percent of those that do score 100 to 300 points higher on the SATs. Funny how you commie block pricks only see the negative in life. Live and Let Live.

  • First thing mate, calm down ! No one is attacking your way of life, its just a discussion. Second, I can't spell ?Well I just hope that you are as fluent in polish as I am in your native tongue. Third, Che is not just a "Marxist commie" as you put it.He is a symbol of anti-culture a symbol of revolution, change ,idealism so its just an interesting avatar to have. And the last but not least take that middle finger of yours and put it way up your ass, moron !

  • @TheNephewHelix

Yes, who needs school with all the vending machines of sugar, caffeine and artificially coloring?

Other than the FEW good social network situations and learning how to walk amongst the herd, you can learn vastly better at home than in a school of 30+ other souls that mostly "Don't Want to be There".

Public Education Picks ways to "teach" things that you may not want your children to know.

  • Instead of working on the stick building, they could've had an ecodome (earth bag shelter) built in a week with the help of their friends, then spent their remaining time working out their energy issues.

  • "we have no interest in bucketing our own waste..." HAHAHAHAHAHA, very funny. Very, very funny.

  • haha he said " excrete-ment"

  • haha whipper snipper

  • WHEN IS LES GOING TO DO A FLLOW UP

  • BUCKETTING YOUR OWN WASTE IS THE SHIT

  • i <3 NATURE

  • Human excrement is absolutely discusting. These people are off the wall..

  • lol. congratulations on your own immaculate excretion.

  • Whats that on his elbow?

  • Tennis elbow?..I think..

  • I think Sue is hot. He's very lucky to have her. Beautiful family.

  • What do they mean by hydro? Hydrogen? I'm British and haven't heard this term before...

  • Re: othertopics

Hydro originated from the ancient Greek for water. In Canada, over 50% of the electricity is generated by Hydroelectric Dams. Thus, in Canada, hydro means electricity (Hope that helps).

  • water

  • I'm a big fan of les, but what about living off the grid in urban areas? i think it would be pragmatic to promote self sufficiency and autonomy to suburbanites ( make it trendy, cheap, but effective, appeal by saving them money). that's where the most consumption takes place, where people still drive giant shithog suvs and are least concerned about sustainability. we can't all be captain of the huckleberry party and go running to the hills.

  • Beauty is truly in the eyes of the beholder because that woman would drive me crazy with all the talking about what she wants must be crazy in bed or something.

  • His wife has a real intense look, it's like an LSD look.

  • nucular?

  • Hahahaha I just heard that :D Nucular energy is hauling your own crap to the compost lol XD

  • typical ..the woman says what she wants and the man does all the work. will this ever change?

  • hahah read, Men are better then women lol it will blow your mind man! HAHAHXD Dick masterson i think is the writer

  • he enjoys directions...

  • orole little house on the prairre. - George Lopez

    (This is inspiring to me)

  • thanks for posting!

  • humans are NOT the cause of climate change. Read up, its the Sun that is getting hotter

  • Why don't you learn something?

  • i did, i learned that sun is getting hotter, nothing to do with humans. This is not a secret, anyone with time and a non washed mind can go learn the truth about solar flares and sun spots.

  • so you're telling me that man made global warming is just a conspiracy?

Bet that'll hold up to scientific inquiry.

  • well just by that comment the lie is working. again do your own research. teh planet has cooled and heated many times b4, and guess what? HUMANS WERENT EVEN HERE!! so ya its a LIE, to TAX and control people and business

  • Wow...

You conspiracy theorists are fucking nutjobs.

  • not rly, to informed people, YOU all are the morons, people who listen to TV and Politicians make me sick. LEARN ON YOUR OWN.

  • I do learn on my own, not from nutjob fundie conspiracy theorist websites.

Christ, I bet you believe in the world ending on 2012 too.

  • you got it all wrong. just forget it.

  • im with rob on this. theres evidence of human produced greenhouse gases, and theres evidence of global warming, but not much evidence of any correlation between the two. That is not to say that humans aren't negatively impacting the world though, it's just a little self-absorbed to think that we are the only factor in global warming.

  • you are right and rong the earth is changing but we "the people" are speeding it up!

  • Wow amazing Idea living in the wilderness . NO BILLS

But keep an eye around you , ReMEmber Those forests hide many creepy things that you dont wanna know . Big foot isn`t to be happy to share his territory . what about the grizzly, wolve.

  • No bigfoot in Ontario.

As for the others, well that's generally why we country folk keep guns close at hand.

  • I've heard that running a weed-eater on gas for half an hour is like driving a Hummer at 100mph for an hour. The landscaping equipment and the industry is a huge contributor to green house gases, however, all people want to do is put fingers at coal plants, oil companies, and car companies (the latter of which we, the American people, are screwing).

  • Think about that statement for a second. Just by guessing, a Hummer would be rated around 16miles per gallon (highway), at best. That is 6.25 gallons to travel 100 miles. Now, most weed eaters hold between a pint and a quart of gas, and they will usually run for about an hour per tank. That means that a Hummer uses 25 - 50 times more gas than a weed eater. What we Americans need to do is stop placing unreasonable pollution / environmental restrictions on ALL industries.

  • This is your statement: "I've heard that running a weed-eater on gas for half an hour is like driving a Hummer at 100mph for an hour". I calculated that a hummer would use 25 - 50 times more gas than a weed eater. 2 stroke engines, ( like on weed eaters) are known to emit more pollution because they burn their engine lubricant with the fuel, thus causing more pollution / smoke. Most new weed eaters are now 4-stroke for this reason. THERE ARE ALREADY ENOUGH RESTRICTIONS!

  • his daughter was talking about how they use water bottles and water jugs, not tap water. If he's so passionate about the environment why is he buying plastic water bottles? i feel like those are conflicting ideas.

  • Plastic can be recycled or reused an infinite number of times as long as it is kept clean.

  • he probably reuses them

  • First of all agree with the the last two people: he likely reuses. Or has some other reason (assuming MT62's hearsay is at all acurate).

But it also makes me wonder why people who may be doing very little to change the way they live comment negatively on someone who is trying to do a lot? Must change be All or Nothing? Deminishing waist, fossil fuel burning and dependancy on large companies by any amount is better than not doing anything all....Les (and his family) rawks.

  • i wish i had at least a fraction of les' knowledge.

  • he should grow some wacky tobbacy

  • Les knows whats going on, good inspiration for my music and hiking

  • Does Canada have a problem with the power going off all the time? The way he talks about it in this it sounds like power going out is a daily thing.

  • The power keeps going out on me... but that's because I forget to pay my bill! :D

  • no hes talking about the economy failing. If it collapses, then there will be no power for possibly years.

  • Power going out isn't a daily thing, but when it does go out it sometimes has disastrous consequences. Here in the Southern Midwest we just had a catastrophic ice storm at the end of Jan. Some of the people served by the Power Companies are being told they won't be reconnected to the "grid" til after the first of March. They are living in shelters and will more than likely go home to busted water pipes. That is the kind of power outages he is talking about.

  • I've lived in ME many years and believe me, during the winter the power will go out quite often.

  • There is one glaring problem with calling it "sustainable" [energy]. Here Les Stroud is considerably lowering his energy usage, no computers, phones, appliances. If it were really sustainable, the way I define the term, they would not have to give up any conveniences of modern life. In other words, only a very small fraction of the population would submit to such a lifestyle as this, especially in 1st world countries. Real "green" living can only be achieved when building costs go down.

  • les is such a badass mo fo

  • Did he do this show before or after survivorman? And does it still run on tv? I so want to do this lol

  • I got to say i clearly understand what is going on here but those poor fucking kids...

  • i would do that in a heartbeat

  • What is that thing he wears on his right arm? check at 3:34. it's not the first time i've seen him wear it

  • it's probably for tennis elbow or arm pain.

  • what i wouldnt do to have 150 acres of land in issolation Les Stroud is the man

  • @Kurby1400 fuck me, I'd take 15 acres

  • couldnt you just put an extra tree in your back yard:)

  • The kids can get education from internet (if they have it) and from the parents. It is better than shit pouring into their heads by school, media and government.

  • Satellite internet is an option.

  • 100% Also, nature is an education. Within it you can learn botany, geography, history, spiritualism, herbal medicine and many more important things. How many people with a college "education" that you know are complete idiots? Nature provides. Wether you Christian and believe God created a beautiful world, or are Zen or Athiest, there is a spititual apsect to nature.

  • @Freecell5671 if I can find something that is healthy for me and I love, and in my case better for the earth than school, it makes me feel so controlled to be seperated from the wild and have it be the law to go to school and be sucked into the modern day, wich is mostly how i've grown up my whole life. any time I have the chance I will go outside and practice this way. I am 12 and I wan't this life to be possible. I want what is best.

  • pretty cool, but not for kids imo, just hearing that word homeschool, no no. lot of respect for the guy tho. les is my hero

  • Too lazy to teach your kids?

  • I'm sure that's not it. I agree with rt36crazyfists 100%. This is a fine way of living if you choose to live that way. The problem is kids usually don't get to make those kinds of choices. Their parents make the choices for them. Also, going to regular school is incredibly important for kids to develop socially. Kids need to be around people their own age and make friends and develop independence.

  • The city is only a few kilometers away!

  • "Regular school" is for dumbing-down kids and teaching them to let others think for them. Making friends at school in no way fosters independence either. Saying kids need to develop socially means nothing in of itself. The social aspects learned from government schools is heard or animal like mentality instead of a civilized nature. Homeschool children tend to interact more peacefully and on equal footing with both adults and other children than government school kids.

  • My neighbors were home schooled and they ended up ok except for the fact that one of them shot our dog when it was still a puppy (and then he had a baby born with spina bifida , haha).

  • Kryss119: Lazy has NOTHING to do with it. Let's face it, homeschooling isn't as east as it first appears. The kids need a TOTAL and COMPLETE education. Not everyone has the resources or ability to homeschool properly and effectively

  • I know a few people who have homeschooled their children and they live on decently sized secluded pieces of land here in the woods of Rhode Island. Personally, from my experience, I find children who are homeschooled to be more interesting and creative than their public school counterpart.

  • Homeschooled kids are socially retarded.

  • i was homescooled for 2years and im far from socially retarded

  • and a lot of presidents were home schooled

  • yeah exactly

  • if youre gonna do it, do it all the way like Dick Proenekke

  • he did for a year before he had children

  • This is pretty interesting and I like Les...but personally, I would never live like this. hehe But that's just me.
