  • When I have gotten a flat I get them plugged and they have worked fine. Cost 5.00 a tire to plug.

They are noisy....by the way I love my BMW 328i Coupe 2007.

  • i can finally run from the cops

  • DON'T THINK SO, RUNNING THOSE ON BMW 3 VERY HARSH RIDE AND DANGEROUS ON BENDS AND BUMPS

  • really works!! Today my 2009 330i coupe experienced this first hand! Was on the highway going 120km and something fell of a truck one my tires hit the stuff that feel off, you can see a crack but it was still able to drive me to a secure location to have them changed!! run flats are awesome!

  • I have RFTs on my E60 525d, first time ive experienced them, regular driving is fine, no different than conventional tyres, however, I have noticed some "snaking" on the motorway on cruise control past 75mph?! Amy ideas?

  • Damn, I enjoy these reviews by this gentleman, a great voice for narration and explaining things.

  • yeah, it's all good until you get 2 flats from a pot hole on the freeway $500 gone!

  • john davis is PIMP... suck it clarkson

  • LOL ADDED BENEFIT = NO SPARE TIRE!

  • yeaaa if there is no spare what happens when the rim is bent?

  • Sensors are great, if they would ever work right.

  • theres no spare tire...what the fuck

  • John Davis is the best!

  • It seems there had been many BMW owners who really dislike the run flats. Run flats seem to be more prone to nail puncture and pot holes than conventional tires, based on significant number of user data. Dealers who are willing to disclose info say they experience much higher rate of tire fixes for run flats than conventional tires.

  • just genius too bad i had this idea long time ago....:( i could've been rich :P

  • RFTs are convenient but very expensive. If you don't drive like the guy in the video, you are better off with regular tires. Most people rarely have flat tires and most people don't drive roadsters where there is no trunk space for a spare tire. Also AAA insurance provides road assistance to replace your tire in case you get stuck. If you have slow leak, you can still get to the nearest service station within a mile or two with regular tires, just drive slow.

  • This technology would mean more expensive tires and added waste materials, instead of reinforcing the sidewalls why can't they use the other technology of a thicker strip of rubber attached on the rim..

  • Thats some skilled driving haha

  • The benefits are clear but there are also some tradeoffs with RFTs. For one there is absolutely no deflection in the sidewall since it is reinforced so every little bump and crack in the road you will feel and hear and in some cases it will violently rattle the car. I went over a small pothole I didn't notice once and it actually made my radio skip. It's also possible to momentarily lose contact with the road i.e. taking an onramp at 30+ mph and hitting a bump causing the car to 'skip'.

  • It's more important to be safe, so even if you're on a bumpy ride at least you can keep going. In the case of the Presidential State Car, it's more important that he's safe than if the car's suspensions go completely wonky

When airless tires come around, it would be great.

  • @juj1n That's true. I drive a Z4 and I can feel the road so to speak. I can feel every bump and hole that I run into and it rattles my little car. It negates your car's shocks. It's like taking a beating from the road. If you don't like a hard ride, i'd recommend against it. If you don't drive like a crazy and you don't mind the inconvenience changing tires on the road or waiting for your insurance to change it for you, then save the money and buy regular tires.

  • I should add that not many shops sell RFTs. You have to pre-order it or buy it online at TireRack. So while you wait for your tires you can use your car as long as you pump air in it every time the red flat tire light comes on. I don't know how long ago the video was done but Motorweek should have mentioned that RFTs, contrary to popular belief, can be repaired (patched inside according to Bridgestone) The public was lead to believe that you have to replace RFTs whenever you have a puncture.

  • The new 3rd Generation RFT from Bridgestone are better I believe.

  • @haziqdaM5fanatic But for standard tires these are pretty good!

  • I rather have a full size spare! Plus they are only talking about a small flat not a really tough puncutre!

  • 2007 E 90 run flat tire are making too much noise!

  • nice, is it just the BMW that has this run flat tires?

  • No spare! will get you to a secure area! No Thanks Would rather have a full size spare.

  • thanks to u jon davis

  • great video, nice demo. Last time i saw the video of electronic stability control and ABS. I am wondering how highway saftey research are helping to bring new innovative saftey features to save life. BMW and Mercedes and not to forget volvo are all great companies

  • If you get a nail in one you have to buy a new tire you cannot fix it like you would a conventional tire, 388.00 per tire including installation around 450.00 per tire. Just had it done. What's the trade off here?

  • because it will help you avoid an accident and you can drive to the shop without getting towed

  • It's all a cost/benefit analysis. Didn't you watch the video? There's two benefits here: no stopping on the side of the road (VERY dangerous, especially on highways or in sketchy neighborhoods) and added safety. While the BMW car assistance program gives free towing, many towing companies (many times joe six pack's towing) don't know how to properly tow German cars (there's a hook on the bumper). If you can drive to a dealer, no worries about added damage.

  • You or your family weren't stuck on the side of the road in harm's way?? It's a peace of mind. Wheel and tire protection great idea to purchase when running runflats though.
