Wow! alnerry is right, no one drives like that any more! Colin was an artist! He'd be lined up perfectly for the apex before he even got to the corner!! Incredible. His style was so fast and on the edge of the limit, but at the same time was so smooth and controlled.
I doubt we will ever see another with this talent. The one and only Colin McRae... RIP you'll always be missed
see Colin and see others from the argentinta rally it will seem to u like the others go very slow. He was driving to the limits of getting off road what a driver RIP
The guy is on the limit everywhere, thats why he was so loved. Most spectcular driver of all time! Colin Mcrae-"Everybody loves to see someone trying their hardest."
if I wanted to become a rally driver in the wrc or otherwise, as the rally of Brazil, how does it make? what it takes? I need a car or the car is the team ... ?
It shows how much skill you need as a rally driver. I mean the course is hard enough as it is and ther are even harder ones out there. But look at how much Colin has to do, he has to do every turn perfectly while fighting oversteer and understeer and because rally cars didnt have flappy paddle gearboxes then it was even harder (as he had only one hand to control the car alot of the time), as well as flick and push switches and buttons while going along for the windscreen wipers etc.
actually you can see that stick goes right to the column so he uses that instead of the paddle but it works the same, maybe he likes the feel of the lever but its the same. Some had a big ring around the back of the steering wheel to grab instead of paddles too
I suppose we have all missed sideways and spectacular footages of old times. This is not just the magic of MCrae. I think the sport evolved in the wrong direction. I cant believe how we come to this boring days from such mighty times. Wrc must be the worst governed sport in the world.
i remember this well, as colin dominated this rally from start to finish!!, this event was his luck returning, as he won it, then greece, then cyprus!, it was 3 in a row wins, he actually had over a 40 second lead !! in only the first few stages!!, richard burns took the fight to mcrae & finished 2nd,, also the 2001 season was one of the best ,
The wipers while steering would be quite the challenge, not to mention everything else he was capable of doing.. that just sort of struck me as something that'd be an unnatural feeling...
The wipers are activated by the co-driver as he knows when the water is coming via the notes. The foot rest in the cockpit has a button he activates with his foot to turn the wipers on and off. Therefore the driver can concentrate on the driving of the car. Our WRC cars are pretty high tech eh!
They also activate some engine protection against water...I remember Toni gardemeister having problems with it when his codriver forget to do it when they were in a Skoda
I've already said this, but I can't help repeating it: this was such a fantastic era for rallying, so many great factors contributing to making it such a memorable, absolutely legendary time. There was a bunch of great drivers, all with their own personalities, but all of them interesting people, driving with flair; the rallies were classics, every one of them; (...)
(...) and then the cars -- those cars let the driver show so much skill, not like the later machines, which are faster, but that's mainly through finding every bit of straight-line traction and making the car handle in a rather dull way, on comparison. We can only be grateful that those great circumstances coincided, which made it possible for the genious of Colin and the true brilliance of such fames as Sainz, Makkinen, Auriol, Delecour, and many others, come through and shine.
Again, gorgeous car control presented by Colin here. And it's all too easy to forget what a superb event the Argentina is, and that it doubtlessly deserves to be called a classic. The stages have absolutely everything to test the driver.
I was struck by the low traction of that seemingly hard-packed surface.
You are very right. The era where we had 3 cars for most teams, Auriol, Burns, Gronholm, Makinen, Kankkunen, Sainz, Martin, Rovanpera, Panizzi and Delecour was magic!
Never forget those times. Rallying has evolved a lot since then and it may be a long time before we have the privilege to be entertained like we were through those years...
he is the co driver giving him pacenotes look at other vids you can actually hear them. he tells them were to go how fast the description of the road etc.
He describes the corners, as everyone else already said, but I'll give an example. It's very hard to tell exactly how sharp a corner is going to be, if there's rocks or bumps, what the correct line is going to be etc.
So "4 left tightens 3 don't cut" would mean there is a left turn that you can take in 4th gear, but it very quickly turns into a sharper turn and you ll have to slow down and take it in 3rd gear. "Don't cut" implies that there is a rock or trees on the inside of the turn, and if
the driver cuts the corner too tightly he would run into said rock or bump, and could ruin the car.
When you're going 85km/h around a tight dirt track, these are all very important things to know. Just looking at the above described corner, the driver might think it was just a left 4, and would hit the apex and start accelerating(right into a tree). Since he knows it's a 4 tightens 3 however, he knows to slow down through the 4 and hit a late apex (at the 3) in order to accelerate out.
