i always have admire basketball Legends Like Chuck Daily Red Aurbach Pat Riley Jerry Sloan and Of Course Phil Jackson as a basketball player these men have all inspired me in a way just like some of the nba players have jordan,Magic,Karrem.Wilt Bird.West Ewing Pippen Drexler Stockton Robison Iverson Kobe Shaq Duncan worthy and Wilt Chambelrlain but none have came close to my biggest inspirtion Like Coach John Wooden No Matter if i was down i would always have coach wooden words in my heart
The greatest coach of all time, and an even better person. His wisdom and philosophy have given me so much in life. His lessons and teachings will never be forgotten. I recommend his books to everyone (They Call Me Coach, Wooden On Leadership). "Happiness begins where selfishness ends"- JRW. Just an incredible human being. RIP.
Im a Hoosier. I grew up watching John. I travel down the highway named for him weekly. My father hated you when you beat IU. But he praised you when you beat anyone else. He always told me you were a Hoosier hick just like us. That had made good.. God bless you John
Great tribute! I was a big fan of college hoops in the 1970s & since I lived in NC--basketball country--I, like so many other ACC fans, despised Wooden & his Bruins because they were just so good! You couldn't beat them & if you did, it was headline news. But I've been reading the books he's written & he was a remarkable man, which lead to his being a remarkable coach & producing winning teams. Wish I could have met him. RIP Coach!
Silence really is golden. This tribute without words shows loud and clear the enormity of Coach Wooden's spirit, skills as a coach, and dedication as a teacher, friend, and human being. The images speak volumes of the deep love and respect he commanded from all whose lives he touched. His shoes can never be filled, and his chair will now remain empty~
A GREAT great man!! He is the definition of what a coach and person should be!! As a military officer, he has the leadership I strive to bring and display!! RIP to the greatest coach who ever was!!!
It saddens me enough for the world to lose John Wooden, but it saddens me further that we're losing all these giants, and we are replacing them with pygmies.
We love 'ya Coach! RIP. And thanks for all the advice and lessons about life and love, as well as basketball, that you so graciously left for us to work on . We're happy knowing that if you're not with us, you're with your beloved Nell. Every day I drive past the old Central High School in South Bend where you coached and taught english. It's nice to have the reminder of you. Thanks for the memories to the greatest coach of all time.
Stunning, and deservedly quite sentimental. Absolutely beautiful tribute---done with the care and class this fine man from my alma mater, UCLA, deserved.....
This post is a touching and moving tribute Coach Wooden. I'm having trouble coming up with superlatives to describe him but I have no trouble saying that I wish I could have met him. Imagine how many lives he changed for the better during his 99 years.
" I am gone- Do not cry, do not sigh, do not be sad, for i am with him who has carried me in his eternal arms. I have loved and i have cried. I have dreamed of you my beautiful bride. I am gone do not cry. You see tonight i will be with the love of my life as well as with him who gave me life." RIP coach wooden!
One of the greatest teachers and greatest coaches ever, the man was a down-to-earth mystic. Basketball players and people from all over the world have learned from him. R.I.P. Coach Wooden !
R.I.P. to the man who single-handedly revolutionized coaching. His teachings also taught his players how to be successful outside of basketball. My condolences go out to his family. I didn't know the man personally but being a die hard sports fan he holds a special place in my heart as well and this is coming from a life long St John's fan. You will be missed but not forgotten.
From a UCONN Husky fan, Coach Wooden, I'm sad to know you won't be around when, perhaps if the UCONN Lady Huskies will tie, maybe even break the 88-game winning streak the Bruins had. You were the only sign of decency in an area known for being left of center. Midwest values brought to SoCal. You and Nell are now home. Greatest coach in NCAA history? The numbers speak for themselves and speak loud volumes. I think the NCAA trophy should be named in his honor.
@NEPatriot naming the National Men's Basketball trophy after him is exactly what I was thinking. His legacy will live on and so will his coaching records long after we are all gone.He won 10 national titles. The only active coach closest to him is Coach K with 4.I believe Wooden's record is very very safe.
May the Wooden family be blessed through this difficult time. Mr. Wooden showed us all that being a champion was not limited to what was just on the basketball court.
Thank you, Mr. Wooden, for the legacy you left for us to follow. Again, may God bless your family and your many friends.
Truly a legend who never rested on his laurels, never forgot where he came from, and never took his success for granted, Coach Wooden's legacy lives on...Go Bruins!
Growing up in LA in the 1960s and 70s, John Wooden made me proud to be an Angelino. It wasn't that he was such a great coach (he was!). He was a decent human being. He made decency and stolidity inspiring. Thanks for a lovely video.
John Wooden will be missed dearly by the UCLA family and anyone who loves the game of basketball alike. The greatest coach, mentor, friend, and man. Thank you for everything you have given to UCLA. Your legacy will live on forever.
Life's true values is what he shared. This country should re-examine what makes the world go 'round. John got it - we all should. God he will be missed and remembered. Rest well coach!
As a Green Bay Packers fan living in Wisconsin, I would put John Wooden over another Legendary Coach, Vince Lombardi, as the Greatest Coach/Manager in all of sports of All-Time. R.I.P. John Wooden. Does anyone know the name of this great piece of music playing?
@805Bruin. Thank You. I know I've heard it many times before such as the Memoriam on the Academy Awards. I love it. It puts me in a good mood. It makes me want to respect people and treat them with dignity, the way John Wooden would teach and live his life. R.I.P. John Wooden.
I have the pleasure of knowing and talking to 89 y/o Mickey Corcoran who played with Coach Wooden during the war. Mickey was coached by the GREAT VINCE LOMBARDI at St. Cecelia and went on to coach Bill Parcells at Riverdell High and I told him Coach Wooden had passed the night before and I remarked he was 99 and what a great run he had. You can't compare Wooden to Lombardi
Coach Wooden has been a hero of mine most of my life. As a father and a Little League coach and basketball coach to my son's team, I try to draw from Coach Wooden's wisdom all the time. I have all his books, and I often find myself thinking, "What would Coach Wooden say in this situation, or that" A true American hero.
