I've been thinking about this a lot lately. I had boxes and boxes of paper-football-embarrassing notes that I recently bound into books or tossed. Kids these days don't pass notes. They are never going to be able to give one another an envelope filled with embarrassing text messages.
Maybe it's for the best. I don't really think so, however.
that was really special, it really made me think about computers and actual physical things that you can hold and show people w/o an internet connection.
i think tangibilizing should be officially put into the dictionary. u should write them a letter (merriem and webster, not collegiate. collegiate is full of stuck up bitches)
You mentioned something, i forgot what but you did mention that it was a story for another day. Which i find weird that you'd say that when it seems everything your saying is a story for another day, you boring twat.
I completely understand where you are coming from. I always start on something and I never get to finish it. I don't know why, I guess I just lose interest. I had actually come up with an idea for a story once but I never got around to writing it, also I thought of making a flying saucer like toy but never got around to it.
luv this vid. you brought up a great point. especially in this day and age, i feel some things have lost their sentimental meaning. it gets lost in translation. example: email vs. snail mail
is it just me, or do you give off the impression that you don't want to leave this world without leaving your mark? i feel the same way. i mean who really wants to go living for 80 plus years and then realizing that you haven't made an impact on anyone?
I love this video Alan. You don't seem to be holding back just sharing yourself with us, remnants of your past and thoughts of the future. Thanks you.
Oh and by the way I have seen a mini disc. I actually own a mini disc player. WHen they where used, a best buy sales guy convinced me they to buy one instead of an mp3 player. I never learned how to use it.
Hi; nice to hear that you still have some tangible items to get out and look at whenever you want. It brings back alot of memories (hopefully all good ones). When I look at some of my tangible items it takes me back to some good times I had in high school. I would like to hear some of the stuff you had written when you were younger and in school. You should read it to us sometime, soon I hope. Thanks for sharing and bringing this up. I like your videos; they are interesting and good.
This is my favorite video of yours so far on this channel. :-) I'm glad you decided to start it again. And i know what you mean about having nothing to show for it, i do everything on the computer now too.
Well? Can we hear some music? I don't care if you were 15... I want to hear it anyway!
And about the whole tangible-ness... That's why I've taken up scrapbooking lately. Gives me something to really remember and look back on events and friends. Just throwing that out there. The card is still an amazing idea though.
Ah, I totally agree with you Alan. I used to write on paper, and have all this crap I could hold, but now I mostly save them as files on the computer, that are easily lost forever. It kind of bites.
Its funny you should be clearing out your closet. I have been chucking old school stuff away and keeping one or two things that mean something. Yeah i understand the wanting to have things visually and tangible. :)
You are an interesting guy to listen to. I can't believe that MiniDiscs are a footnote in history already. Your ability to plan out what to say in a video amazes me. That is a definite skill on here. Or better put the definitive skill. This is some excellent commentary on pop culture as it relates to generational passing.
for one thing, you can totally make up words... our freakin president does it! the english cant really get mad at us for out role models. oh wait... we did kinda vote him in, huh.
i really enjoyed this video, the only thing is that you seem a little sad. i know what you mean when you said that you want something tangible to show for the things that you do today. things are so different, and people have replaced paper with the internet.
I see Charlies in for one wicked guilt trip. Lol. Seriously, though, if you guys want some tangible items you should definitely make a season of all your guys' videos on a dvd or something, that might be cool. Maybe even make a Five Awesome Guys MOVIE. That would take a lot of work, though...
This was a great video. In high school, I was still doing a lot of my stuff on the computer but one day I decided I needed more than that...so I printed out important conversations I had with friends as if they were letters. Printed out fun comic strips that I read online. So on and so on. I think I should go back to doing that and keep tangible records of my life.
i think computerized forms of awesome can even be better then tangible forms.
at least this way you can share it with people all over the world whereas a tape or pages of a script can only be shared with people near you...just me tho
i found this video extremely depressing for some reason. it kind of makes me feel like im watching "noah everyday". It reminds me that high school doesnt last forever and that people get old (not that your ancient or something). but it was a really good video that gave us a little insight on what you were like as a kid. awesome vid :)
My mom found a small pile of elementary school work from me and my sister. It's pretty hilarious to look at it. My stuff had a lot to do with apples and hers had a lot of bugs. It is nice to see how much things have changed of yourself, from small things like handwritting and coloring, but also see that not much has changed at all in the end; I have a small note from my teacher saying Im a good student but am rather withdrawn... which is still being said to this day in my High School years.
I love "momentums" as a plural of momento. I also love the verbization of "tangible." This, coming from an English BA. Go for it. The language can always use expansion, in my opinion.
I totally understand, and because of this I decided to stop writing and that sort of stuff via computer. It's just not a creative, tangible representation.
I am writing this comment to tell you that I have a lot of respect for you. Often when you talk about your life experiences, like in this video, I find myself relating to what you're saying. Thanks for being who you are.
A good point that so much done electronically means there is often less to discover. I print out most of my photos and save my videos to DVD so that it isn't all stuck in a computer somewhere. It's a good idea to keep hard copies of all your projects so that you can enjoy discovering them all over again - and have less risk of losing them in a computer crash or something.
yeah..it sometimes make me feel sad to don't have any phisical memories to look back at..:( but you should totally play one of the songs from your band i your next video..=D=D
I have stuff stuff that I have written all the way back to when I was three years old (dictated to my parents). Only a couple are any good, however that tangible stuff that shows your progression is invaluable. I know completely how you feel.
I finished a 500 page novel then scrapped it and started over with the same basic story. I really like the story, but the way it was told the first time was horrible. I know how you feel.
I really enjoyed watching this video. I used to have many various items in folders of sketches and stories that I created as well. Now everything I have is electronic too.
Yeah that's the unfortunate part of computers and technology. As awesome as it is and as much as we can do with it now and connect there is nothing tangable from it. I'm glad you are starting up the card thing again. Hopefully Charlie won't lose it again. Haha. :-)
I know how you feel. :) The more I used computers the fewer "real world" remains I have. I used to fill folders after folders with pictures and notes for stories and whatnot, now it's mostly files on my hard drive. And the internet took time away from what used to go to "creativity". It's not necessarily a bad thing, just... different.
I hope this card project works out after all. Maybe Charlie should send his part in seperately...? *laughs*
I totally know how you feel with the sudden lose of tangible items. I'm a big doodler, and my mom always told me to keep all my drawings (dun know why, but she refused to let me throw any sketch away) so I've got shelves and boxes full of little notes and half finished ideas all over the place. then college started and I started taking all my notes on a laptop, and all my drawings turned into schoolwork. It really is pretty sad now that I think about it...
That was really cool, Alan. Yeah, it's true. So much is just . . . in my computer now. But I have a ton of stuff out still. I think I'll have to video respond. (That bit for my memory more than anything else) but yeah, awesome thoughts.
I was thinking about that a few days ago actually. Up until I was about 11 or 12, I still had a camera with film and I have whole photo albums full of memories from when I was young. Then my family got a digital camera and now I'm 15 I have my own, so all my memories are jpegs and it wouldn't take that much to destroy them all. It's sad really, but technology is so much more convenient for storing that stuff.
Its funny, but I have loads! Like notes in class, notebooks, school books, poems, lyrics, stories, doodles blah blah blah and I think, however much I love computers, my notebooks and diaries will stay with me for they are much more discreet when writing in class with out my teacher noticing.
I did think about what you did and I went into my basement and found some of my high school memories. It is good to remember people and things. The computer has changed and It would be so much better to save on commputer. I did this for my children also.
Well, I guess if you want something tangible to have to remind you of this, maybe you should get some sort of card that you all sign and put things that symbolize you onto... Just hope that nobody loses it.
I do soooo much writing I ended up starting a folder just like that. The it ended up being a couple notebooks. Now I have a three draw filing cabinet...Thank God for todays technology I have most of it on two 2GB memory sticks now.
yea my parents say im too sentimental but finally im not the only one! lol i was cleaning my room the other day and i found all this neat stuff from my past.. go tangible memories!
i start so many porjects thinking, "ok, this was so much fun doing in art class i think i'm going to make something like it except better." and then i never finish it.
That reminded me of this novel I started writing in... what... 1st grade? o.0;; Of course I laugh on the silliness of it all when I think back on it, and it's so stupid that I'll never decide to write it again, but it's just nice to think about all the memories, don't you think? xD
I think if you guys dish out punishments for anything that effects the group in a negative way, you should also reward people when they do something that effects the group in a positive way.
I'm really happy to see that the Card O'Awesome is in the works again.
(P.S. Get Alex to supervise Charlie when he's filling out his section.)
:)...I can TOTALLY understand what you mean...I like crambling in my old stuff too, although I do't have that much of it because I always throw old things out...but some just remain in my collection...and I like the idea of having something from my past...
And I have tons of old notebooks and stories and passed notes saved from Middle school. Looking at them reminds me of all the friends I've made and the ideas I've had...
Considering all the vloggers you work with and your small number of subscribers...you're like the youtube equivalent of the Pixies. You're so much more influential than you appear to random viewers.
Hennyway, I've actually spent a while "de-trangiblizing" old scraps of paper of mine. I have tons of notes and journals that I've transcribed to word docs.
I so remember the mini cds! And my sister jumped on that boat and said it's the future, and then they created mp3 players. xD
I hate starting something with enthusiasm and then never finishing them. But I do that a lot. I know what ya mean. Glad you're bringing the card idea back!
i made a time capsule in the 3rd grade and my teacher was like "dont open it until you graduate" so i didnt.. and im surprised that i actually didnt because im so bad at forgetting about stuff and leaving it alone. but when i opened it.. WOW!!
ill have to make a video when my camera stops being stupid.
Dude, in highschool Nirvana and Manson were my whole world! And I was spring cleaning this weekend, too! I keep stuff from as far back as 1st grade. And I also don't like that all memories are more electronic than physical these days. That's why I still mail people letters (via carrier pigeon) and mixtapes on actual cassette tapes. Wonderful video Alan, you made me miss the 90s.
Glad to see you're starting the card again. :) I thought that was a great idea, it was very sad when it got lost. But it's good that you're starting it up again. :)
Thats really awesome Alan, I totally know how you feel. I haven't kept any pictures that weren't digital in ages, and now I have nothing to show for it.
i really did like that card idea but rather then just the one card what about if everyone has 1 card and all the others graffitti that card with messages etc etc just like before really?
really great video alan. at the moment 5ag has been stupidly awesome, i think all of you guys are making fantastic videos that are interesting, funny and sincere
i always wanted to be in a band, but i never got that opportunity. i regret it :(
excellent point, i love tangible things. in this digital age, it's hard to prove all the things you've worked on. i agree with pretty much this whole video. i wish i had some of your wisdom, Alan :)
I just realized that since I got my first digital camera I did not have a photo in my hands, however, I toke more pictures in those three years of digital camera than in thirteen years of non-digital cameras...

I've had such a bad day, but this video really made me smile.
I've now started looking through boxes of my old stuff, and it has made me quite happy. :3

That was really cool, Alan. Yeah, it's true. So much is just . . . in my computer now. But I have a ton of stuff out still. I think I'll have to video respond. (That bit for my memory more than anything else) but yeah, awesome thoughts.
malarayofsunshine 3 years ago
I was thinking about that a few days ago actually. Up until I was about 11 or 12, I still had a camera with film and I have whole photo albums full of memories from when I was young. Then my family got a digital camera and now I'm 15 I have my own, so all my memories are jpegs and it wouldn't take that much to destroy them all. It's sad really, but technology is so much more convenient for storing that stuff.

memories are the best
tangible mementos can get lost or stolen or burned in fires
but no one can take your memories :D

Its funny, but I have loads! Like notes in class, notebooks, school books, poems, lyrics, stories, doodles blah blah blah and I think, however much I love computers, my notebooks and diaries will stay with me for they are much more discreet when writing in class with out my teacher noticing.
Ps, I am 13

Poor Charlie....
But yeah, I'm too much of a perfectionist to ever finish a novel, and believe me, I've tried.
I agree on the whole tangible thing, I love to just look through old stuff in my room and just reminisce.

You should let us hear some of your band's music. :D

Nice video.

i really liked this video.
it reminded me of this time capsule box
my best friend and i made in kindergarten.
it was filled with personal items.
we buried it in her back yard.
i wonder if it's still there.
sometimes i hate technology.

i start so many porjects thinking, "ok, this was so much fun doing in art class i think i'm going to make something like it except better." and then i never finish it.

Fascinating... xD
That reminded me of this novel I started writing in... what... 1st grade? o.0;; Of course I laugh on the silliness of it all when I think back on it, and it's so stupid that I'll never decide to write it again, but it's just nice to think about all the memories, don't you think? xD

What sort of music did you played?
mullac93 3 years ago
Awesome point.
I can totally relate.
My family used to make keep photo albums using developed pictures, but now, we don't take any nondigital photos.
It makes me sad, but at least I'll always have the photo albums for nostalgic purposes.

Glad you're bringing the card idea back!

so weird!
i made a time capsule in the 3rd grade and my teacher was like "dont open it until you graduate" so i didnt.. and im surprised that i actually didnt because im so bad at forgetting about stuff and leaving it alone. but when i opened it.. WOW!!
ill have to make a video when my camera stops being stupid.

Wonderful video Alan, you made me miss the 90s.
hairsprayqueen 3 years ago
Great video! Thats awesome that you've kept all that stuff! It must be really cool to look at some of it and remember all the things you did.
BTW....I would love to here one of your songs! :)
