This story was fictional bu Abd el Krim was a Berber guerrilla leader that actually defeated Spanish colonial troops in several battles in the 1920s. But then a combined French & Spanish army of 250,000 invaded his "Rif Republic" & defeated el Krim in 10 mos. of fighting & using Mustard gas against the Berbers.

I seem to remember back in the 50´s Degaulle gave the French colonies their freedom. The Legion thought it as a sort of treason to them, which in a sense, I think it was, because it made all their sacrifice and deaths over the years rather worthless.

@fmg50 Specifically, it was Algeria in 1961 and 1962. Units of the Legion, particularly the 1st Parachute Regiment, mutinied and planned a drop on Paris to seize the government. The plans were foiled, the 1st REP disbanded, and many of the Legion officers became members of the Secret Army Organization (OAS), a terrorist group.

Wonderful movie !!! With great actors performances :Terence Hill is amazing with his mythic smirk ! Catherine Deneuve is just splendid and they match perfectly :)

But I was so disappointed at the last scene !!

Why doesn't she stay with Marco ??? Or why doesn't he go with her ? It's sad .. I wanted them to be together !!!
