@ianidinuse I've been singing along to this song and the lyrics actually fit the song; wicked. However, I still keep my initial statement. In the Jazz Drumming System they have a song that is very similar to Take 5 from The Dave Brubeck quartet, but it is not the original take 5, or they would have to pay royalties. Just like in the Drumming System they have a song very similar to Back In Black from ACDC. This song is from the Latin Drumming System, so I think they used the same procedure here.
Was the part with the brush/stick really necessary? I felt like the of cymbals in the piano solo (which was beautiful) made a groove stiff and tense, rather then the flowing eighth note feel Bossa Nova often has.
I'm not saying you shouldn't use your brushes in Bossa, I just felt like it didn't really fit in this context.
I know you are a good drummer and that most Americans play bossa this way, but as a Brazilian I have to say that real bossa asks for more syncopation, variation and a different accentuation. Listen to Paulinho Braga playing with Jobim and check out a vídeo here on YT where Jobim teaches Gerry Mulligan to play the One Note Samba. Brazilians have the same issue the other way around, playing swing jazz is not easy for us at all.
Give me some names of Bossa Nova artists that are substantial in Brazil. I'm getting more into bossa nova studies and I need to see the real deal. Thanks!
Well, virtually no artist is playing bossa in Brazil anymore. As a movement, Bossa Nova disapeared by the end of the 1960's and It developed into protest music and other styles.
The main Brazilian artists at the time were Jobim, Joao Gilberto, Astrud Gilberto, Nara Leao, Roberto Menescal, Carlos Lyra, Marcos Vale. A good album to listen to some good beats is "Aguas de Marco" (Waters of March) by Antonio Carlos Jobim and Elis Regina.Although this one is actually post-bossa.
He's mic'd and recorded. His drums sound fantastic, but that's due to the equalization/compression/filtering. If you were standing there listening to it live it would not sound like that. Not taking anything away from Mike's playing or sound, he's great, but don't compare your sound to that produced by pro recording engineers on tape.
man. i like that drummer. i fuckin hate the way i play. ive been playing for 6 or so years and practice non-stop and i never like the way i sound. is it just me or are there alot of musicians that are never satisfied with their sound?
do you play with other musicians? makes all the difference... you gotta get loose and enjoy yourself....not push for more more but groove ...... watch steve jordans, the groove is here...the simplest beats can make the music sound great if you get in the pocket..
where it IS important to push yourself and make progress... You also need to know when to pull BACK a bit.
If you're praticing and you feel your NOT getting anywhere... go to something that you already do well and work for 10 minutes improving THAT technique. Maybe... bump up the tempo a notch past your "comfort Zone"... Work on improving an already PROVEN technique. THEN... take a break... have some coffee.. enjoy a Twinkie or something...
go back and work on the things that are giving you the most trouble... I'll bet you find again You will be able to make MORE progress whith THOSE thongs than you thought possible!
a pocket is how many known ideas or tricks(chops) the drummer has in his/her memory. its basically implying the drummer has practiced and has taken the time to be creative and musical. - hope tht helped a bit
The is "too compressed". I mean, when he plays lower or higher (speaking about the volume) it sounds the same. The audio production is to "rock" to my ears in this clip - man...it's a bossa nova! The bass drum is with too much "kick"
this is nice but is not the essence of bossa nova. I would say this is a variation because it is supposed to be very soothing and mellow. Mike is doing it more aggresively but still I like it.
Its called a sub kick, it amplifies the sounds of the bass drum that are below human audiable abiltiy, the part of the bass drum that is felt, not always heard
It's a Steinberger guitar. The ball end of the string goes at the end of the neck and the end that usually threads through the pegs at the head stock is threaded at the bridge. These guitars have tuners on the bridge are renowned for their tuning stability and durability. I can't play them just because it's too weird playing a guitar with no headstock.
this is god awful elevator music..

@AbreValas It is Garota de Ipanema without the melody :) Trust me, I know. The chord progression and stuff is all too familiar.

Hey man... it's common for a musician to be their own WORST enemy sometimes...
Usually... No one is MORE critical of our skills than.... OURSELVES.
A suggestion...
When you're playing with other musicians... STOP anylayzing what you do. Forge about technique... rudiments etc... Just simply PLAY. That's it...
I bet you'll find that if you take the pressure OFF of yourself... You'll actually play WAY BETTER than you thought possible.

Also, Here's A Practice suggestion...
where it IS important to push yourself and make progress...
