  • this is god awful elevator music..

  • no it couldn't. It's girl from ipanema...

  • could be Desafinado

  • Just because it is Bossa doesnt mean it is Girl from Ipanema.

  • @RonBurgundy609 the song is Girl from Ipanema by its name.

  • I don't think so.. this song isn't The Girl of ipanema .___.

  • It should be noted that this is a very straight bossa

  • Man what are the bassist and guitarists names? They kick ass

  • @SummitDrums The guitarist is Jody Fisher.

  • great ... I love this music. is within the genre of jazz ...

  • thanx for posting this very useful video!

  • wats the thing in front of his bass

  • @DAKOTA15947 a subkick

  • GREAT SITE for programming drums. thanks.

  • We play this in my highschool jazz band. I'm the drummer. :D

  • @SDSdrummer17 what ? really ? i thought you were the dj

  • I´m Brazillian Drummer.. This is so distant to be a Garota de Ipanema

    Not Feeling

  • @raphinhasuperpraise agreed. nada a ver..

  • @raphinhasuperpraise the chords used are from the girl from ipanema

  • But still, this is a very refreshing new take on this classic. I like this. :D

  • Definitely is Garota de iPanema.

  • @ianidinuse Not Garota de Ipanema...but they might have drawn some inspiration from it.

  • @AbreValas It is Garota de Ipanema without the melody :) Trust me, I know. The chord progression and stuff is all too familiar.

  • @ianidinuse I've been singing along to this song and the lyrics actually fit the song; wicked. However, I still keep my initial statement. In the Jazz Drumming System they have a song that is very similar to Take 5 from The Dave Brubeck quartet, but it is not the original take 5, or they would have to pay royalties. Just like in the Drumming System they have a song very similar to Back In Black from ACDC. This song is from the Latin Drumming System, so I think they used the same procedure here.

  • @AbreValas Thats when I agree with you ;) They can't play the exact same thing, but they can follow the chord progression and stuff.

  • @ianidinuse And that's when I agree with you also ;).

  • @AbreValas (: Cheers!

  • @ianidinuse Cheers mate. Wicked, a youtube conversation that did not end in a brawl. I drink to that :).

  • @AbreValas I would too.. But I don't drink ;)

  • @ianidinuse I drank some water :)...when i get really hardcore I drink milk, but that's just when I really want to party hard.

  • @AbreValas Lol :D I drank some water too.. when I wanna party hard, I open a bottle of peach tea.

  • That bass player is my teacher !!!!!

  • dificil

Paulo Braga on Elis and Tom

Rubens Barsotti on any Zimbo Trio disc

Erivelton Silva on Rosa Passos' Pano Pra Manga

    Wilson das Neves

    Joao Cortez

    Milton Banana

    ...etc.

  • Smooooooth.

That's how it is supposed to play.

  • beautiful song, love that headless guitar

  • sounds cool...it makes my feeling good

    it helps me relax...cool

  • that song is the girl from ipanema!

  • @hlias201 not even close :P

  • @hlias201 Not.

  • The Girl from Ipanema?

  • ofcoz not 0 0.......

  • @razadeloselfos could also be blue bossa. the same change after the 16th bar

  • Was the part with the brush/stick really necessary? I felt like the of cymbals in the piano solo (which was beautiful) made a groove stiff and tense, rather then the flowing eighth note feel Bossa Nova often has.

I'm not saying you shouldn't use your brushes in Bossa, I just felt like it didn't really fit in this context.

  • I know you are a good drummer and that most Americans play bossa this way, but as a Brazilian I have to say that real bossa asks for more syncopation, variation and a different accentuation. Listen to Paulinho Braga playing with Jobim and check out a vídeo here on YT where Jobim teaches Gerry Mulligan to play the One Note Samba. Brazilians have the same issue the other way around, playing swing jazz is not easy for us at all.

  • Give me some names of Bossa Nova artists that are substantial in Brazil. I'm getting more into bossa nova studies and I need to see the real deal. Thanks!

  • tu fala portuges?

  • The piano solo was simply fabulous.

  • This is "The girl from impanima" with a ifferent melody.

  • Ipanema =P

  • This is really good. Thank you for all your posting. I feel like I'm giggin agian.

    Peace!

  • He's mic'd and recorded. His drums sound fantastic, but that's due to the equalization/compression/filtering. If you were standing there listening to it live it would not sound like that. Not taking anything away from Mike's playing or sound, he's great, but don't compare your sound to that produced by pro recording engineers on tape.

  • man. i like that drummer. i fuckin hate the way i play. ive been playing for 6 or so years and practice non-stop and i never like the way i sound. is it just me or are there alot of musicians that are never satisfied with their sound?

  • do you play with other musicians? makes all the difference... you gotta get loose and enjoy yourself....not push for more more but groove ...... watch steve jordans, the groove is here...the simplest beats can make the music sound great if you get in the pocket..

  • yeah i play with other musicians...i'm just never satisfied

  • Try guitar then!

  • Hey man... it's common for a musician to be their own WORST enemy sometimes...

Usually... No one is MORE critical of our skills than.... OURSELVES.

    A suggestion...

When you're playing with other musicians... STOP anylayzing what you do. Forge about technique... rudiments etc... Just simply PLAY. That's it...

I bet you'll find that if you take the pressure OFF of yourself... You'll actually play WAY BETTER than you thought possible.

  • Also, Here's A Practice suggestion...

where it IS important to push yourself and make progress... You also need to know when to pull BACK a bit.

If you're praticing and you feel your NOT getting anywhere... go to something that you already do well and work for 10 minutes improving THAT technique. Maybe... bump up the tempo a notch past your "comfort Zone"... Work on improving an already PROVEN technique. THEN... take a break... have some coffee.. enjoy a Twinkie or something...

  • go back and work on the things that are giving you the most trouble... I'll bet you find again You will be able to make MORE progress whith THOSE thongs than you thought possible!

  • These suggestions are posted for Applefritter...

  • what do you mean by the pocket? i notice its used alot.

  • a pocket is how many known ideas or tricks(chops) the drummer has in his/her memory. its basically implying the drummer has practiced and has taken the time to be creative and musical. - hope tht helped a bit

  • It could also mean, not over drumming and taking over but rather melding in with what is happening around you.

  • @magicmushrooms1817 dude i think pocket means falling in line with the groove. falling in the pocket of the groove.

  • @magicmushrooms1817 no chops are chops and pocket is pocket two completely different things

  • Really nice music!

  • It's Brazilian Music...

  • good

  • Well it is nice. The beat is the most common.....and the harmony is Girl from Ipanema...:)...keep the good job

    Hugs Honey

  • woow the pianist rocks....perfect solo... especially the duoble time phrases have a herbie hancock touch

  • No wanna learn some bossa nova licks on the guitar...The bass sounds like a fart lolz...

  • the piano player is great

interesting way to play this song...

  • Bossa Nova with a metal sounding drum kit. Sounds like Mr. Bungle or something.

  • lol

  • i liked everything, just not the bass solo, that one didnt fit at all...

  • agreed.

and the tone of it was borderline terrible! lol

  • yah it did. everything was awesome.

  • nah it was just the tone could of been tweeked a little

  • i think its the pickups,

it woulda sounded a lot better with a bass with frets

  • yeaa...better pups would help. frets would change the sound completely

  • holy fuck jody fisher

  • I was just about to ask if that was him! Haha, it sure looks like him and his goofy steiny-style headless guitars

  • what kind of guitar is dat???? i've never seen one like that..

  • Klein.

  • looks like itd be really comfortable to play lol

  • The is "too compressed". I mean, when he plays lower or higher (speaking about the volume) it sounds the same. The audio production is to "rock" to my ears in this clip - man...it's a bossa nova! The bass drum is with too much "kick"

  • Girl From Ipanema. Could recognize that intro and those changes anywhere. Nice

  • this is nice but is not the essence of bossa nova. I would say this is a variation because it is supposed to be very soothing and mellow. Mike is doing it more aggresively but still I like it.

  • What is that being attached to the bass drum's front head? Muffler?

  • Its called a sub kick, it amplifies the sounds of the bass drum that are below human audiable abiltiy, the part of the bass drum that is felt, not always heard

  • He can do whatever He wants as long as he has that soul patch..

  • I love Bossa Nova

  • Jody Fisher, isn't it?

    Amazing Jazz player.

  • its the bass... :D

  • lol slightly cheesy....

  • how do u tune that guitar when it has no things to tune it with....

  • It's a Steinberger guitar. The ball end of the string goes at the end of the neck and the end that usually threads through the pegs at the head stock is threaded at the bridge. These guitars have tuners on the bridge are renowned for their tuning stability and durability. I can't play them just because it's too weird playing a guitar with no headstock.

  • this styl of music is one of my favorites

  • the man on the guitar is jody fischer......

    crazy ;)

  • amazing vid,

    freaky guitar!! love it

  • stary hhx wymiata!

  • I want to play with some people like this, i swear i can do some crazy bossa nova stuff, that be fun

  • Nice piano work

  • THis is right on, flawless, i enjoh

  • feelin' goooood!
