The great Frank Sinatra. It is truely amanzing the way he articulated every word so perfectly and how expressively he sang. There will never be another Frank.
This song is a gem! For me the Close To You album is Sinatra's best. In fact, it was the first Sinatra album I bought back in the eighties when Capitol re-issued his albums in the original sleeves. From that moment on I really started to discover Sinatra. Before that I listened to the Sinatra LP's my dad left at my mom's and thought the Sinatra of the seventies was great... But then I found out about the 1950's, the Capitol Years.
I love this version recorded 5th April 1956 - the album tried to recreate the intimate Axel Stordahl arrangements of the 40's but wasn't the success hoped for.
This is a unique Sinatra album, very beautiful and very nicely remastered. This is my favorite track from it. He is most known for his swing tunes but he was the incomparable balladeer. Check out "Only The Lonely", "Where Are You", and "No One Cares".
great posting from a great album! BTW---Bing Crosby sang this originally in a film from 1935...I love both versions :) One of the great Standards...what a song.
@AboveCommonInsyt LOL@..." how to work you tube?" Yep...know how to tie my own shoe laces too... lmao...I was actually an electronics tech before I retarded...er...retired... :D))
For my taste, Sinatra reached his peak in the 50s and early 60 when he worked with Nelson Riddle (as here). His voice deepened, and his ability to communicate the story of the lyrics matured. I like his earlier work with Axel Stordal, it is fine music, but feel that the work he did with Riddle has a timelessness that makes it fresh every time I listen.
But then, with the exception of the duets albums, there are no bad FS records!
Sinatra during the 40's was not at his best since I feel he tended more to just deliver the melody but not the genuine emotion. He was more just a crooner then. But during the late 50's to the 70's I feel the real emotion coming through his rendition. He will always be my most favorite male singer. Perry Como is a close second.
I would strongly disagree. I love his earlier big band songs. But I believe his best stuff was done between 43 and 49. after this, he had a throat op and was never quite the same, although he still delivered authenticly. listen to tracks like 'all the things you are' and 'you'll know when it happens.' I don't believe his voice could be bettered.
I agree with theguy below.Sinatra is the master.I say this not as a lover of the man or as a type of sentimentalism but simply from the fact that he brings out more of the song than others.Others too are great like Tony bennett and Dean Martin not to mention Elvis who was amazing but sinatra is the only one who gace the song a complete stage. He is always in harmony with the surrounding music. That is a gift from God that very few singers possess.
hey tony7840, i loved bobby darin and saw him in person in his prime, what a talent, but tony, sorry amigo, only one person could captivate an audience even close to mr sinatra and that was sammy davis jr., when it comes to pure rendition of a song, i don't care who's singing no one ever comes close to frank, even placido domingo said sinatra is the greatest singer of all time
I loved Dean. But he did not extend himself. Frank sang a much broader range of music and styles. And his arrangements, tes HIS arrangements were incredible.
@TheMRMProductions I became his fan at 10, in 1973. My friends that thought I was crazy now say he's just the best. I suffered wondering if I was wrong, but I was so right. Lucky you who can enjoy his music early in life. Always try to make it happen in your life the way Music suggests. Becouse Music is part of God, and for this reason we can make it come true. Best wishes!
I love this CD and this is maybe my favorite from it...so delicate and quiet. Sinatra always tailors his dynamics to fit the arrangement; just awesome here. The emotion when he brings the song back after the bridge(if that is right) is great to hear.
Buble is talented and it's good he tries to keep these songs alive, but his voice is so sterile and can never possess the substance and character that Frank's has.
This song was written about 1934-35. I have the Victor Recording by George Hall, w/vocal by Joey Nash, also the Freddy Martin recording w/vocal by Elmer Feldkam on Brunswick, One of my Fave songs.. Both are emotional, but Frank injects new life into this song. Great Love song just right for the Old Blue Eyes! Like how he takes it back at the second bridge, making it become the coda. Cute Trick by Nelson Riddle. 5*****
This is one of my all time favorite LP by Sinatra. I was thrilled when it came out in de cd format. My LP is an old one that belonged to my parents. He was in such a good moment when he recorded this gem. I love "P.S. I Love You".
This song dates from 1934, I have the Scroll label Victor of this w/Richard Himber and his Ritz~Carleton Hotel Orch. Vocal by Joey Nash. Good to compare to any other version, but once again, "Ol' Blue
Eyes" does not disappoint. Love the Violin interlude in the middle of the song.
I couldn't agree with you more. No other male vocalist past, present or future will ever match the wonderful Francis Albert Sinatra. He has an incredible voice and sings with such feeling. I know that you've made a comment about Frank in regards to his music and his voice, but let me add the only other singer who sings with the same depth of emotion is the fabulous Eydie Gorme. No female vocalist past, present or future will match her either. I am a huge fan of both singers and love their music.
I love Ella Fitzgerald too. I grew up with her music because my parents were fans. I'm also crazy about Peggy Lee...she was an incredible singer. Very happy to see someone of my age that is a huge fan of Frankie as well!
How many of us do you actually know, hm? We're like ninjas, invisible.
We hide behind the kids that play Pop, R&B etc.
They'd probably never understand our taste in music.
I'm proud to have a different taste in music than the average teenager.
So, THIS is what my ears recognize as 'true music', I'm 17, haters gonna hate.

No need to quarrel DMlover: for the half-century since Sinatra achieved his mature level of artistry with music arrangers who reinvented the songs of their own generation no comparable vocalist has come along. Inventive arrangers should help the Bubbles, the Grogans, etc., realize and record fresh versions of contemporary standards. No dash or flash will make a dent so long as they continue to perform arrangements that remind audiences of Sinatra, who made the songs inextricably his.
