@mermaydlondon Yay another Adelaidian. I pronounce "Advance" with a long "A" also. Usually when I hear a large congregation sing our anthem, you usually can hear it being pronounced like "advahnce". Yeah, we do sound quite different compared to the Eastern Coast States.

(2) Your comment is anachronistic. In the 19th century Australia was a part of the British Empire; by definition, therefore, Australians at that time were "British" (as well as being "Australian" of course). Things are different today, but it's wrong to judge 19th century personage by 21st century notions of nationality.

Yeah fully you have to sing it with the English accent I always say advance the "American way" but when I sing the anthem it's always the English way!!! the reason why delta has sang the national anthem with an english accent is because it sounds more formal and shes in melbourne and melbourne is known to speak with a formal accent where other states such as queensland is more layed back and informal with their accents

It is the right way, i.e. with the english accent, but I think it has more to do with the fact that Delta's been living in England for a few years now with Brian, and her accent has taken on some of the english qualities to it, even when she is just speaking

@jemmigrace You need to get around Australia more. Plenty of Australians do normally pronounce it "advahnce". I'm not saying it's a majority, but this is not exactly a foreign pronunciation in Australia.

And a trained singer who has learnt about the need for good diction when singing would normally sing "advahnce" -- even if s/he doesn't usually say it that way in everyday speech. That's the case with me -- When singing I pronounce my English differently than when I speak.

@jemmigrace well when i speak i say advance (sounds more like advents sorta) but in school i was in a choir and we were taught to round our vowls so instead of saying down like you would noramlly we'd say doun like how a german would speak and sing advance as an english person would. ;)
