Well, it cant - thats why its trying to focus all the way up and down again without getting anything. You can hit the AF anytime, but this is not actually getting anything focused!

d40 has no focus motor in it; therefore, it won't auto focus nikon 50mm 1.8

35mm 1.8 will auto focus on d40x, d60, d90 etc.

35 x 1.5 crop factor is equivalent to 50mm in film.

Sorry, i'm talking about the lens, when you detach it from the camera and try adjusting the focus ring you will the driver adapter spinning. That's where the driver will go into like a screwdriver.

I have the D40 also, which does not have a driver on the mount. You will see it spinning when you adjust the focus ring. That's why it takes awhile to get a good focus while doing manually. I tried the lens on my friend's D90 and it focus fast just like the one on the video. Excellent lens, though. It is good for portrait especially during low light conditions while retaining quality of sharpness.
