The fact is that Lata and Rafi stopped singing with each other from 1963 to 1967. They had a clash regarding the copyright of the songs. Otherwise there was no chance of Sardar Malik using Suman in his song.
Playback singing is not merely a question of voice but also of suitable expression concerning situation AND role - in which Lata is only equalled, if not surpassed by, Mohd Rafi..

Suman has sung a great song with Rafi. She is every bit as good as Lata and has a higher range. One should be biased in favor of Lata. Make them both sing the same song and then you can judge better. Her voice is very similar to Lata, so one cannot say that Lata had a unique voice. I don't believe that Lata was unfair to any body. It is the fault of the incompetent and tone deaf music composers who could not judge Suman independently and had to follow the crowd, which is hardly ever a proper ju
I think Rafi and Suman Kalyanpur sang the songs in Sanjh aur Savera beautifully. Can someone upload the wonderful song Ajahun na aaye balama from this movie. Thanks.

Dear Dr Bukhari, you are perfectly right in all that you have written, but one point is extremely doubtful: till 1949, Lata was still not a force to reckon with, and it is extremely unlikely that she could have been in the slightest way responsible for Noorjahan's decision to opt for Pakistan. I am sure even Noorjahan herself can not have made such a claim.

Great upload, including useful pieces of information based on some facts and some speculations plus a list of 12 prominent duets of Suman with Rafi. Nice work.
it is very true that Lata ji was some kind a rude or self proudy, she got all reason in the world to be like that but she blocked so many good female singers i-e suman kalyan pur, sudha malhotra, mubarak begum and few others, but that is the dark side of the commercial ism and corporate culture to be blamed.Even her own sister aasha ji was also compared and igonored for years untill O.P Nayar ji decided not to go for lata ji's voice for playback singing......all that is history now.......
We should not keep comparing Lata and Suman. Suman had her own class and individuality-a sweet voice, clear diction and a unique freshness. Her tuning with Rafi was excellent. Their duets are very charming and romantic.
Sumanji, like all the other great singers of your era, you will be remembered by music lovers forever.
Lataji was THE best of those we have listened to. There is no doubt about that. The question is whether she had the self confidence to know that she was best? I love Suman Kalyanpur and would say that she comes closest to Lata. However, when I listened to many different types of songs sung by Suman and Lata, both in Marathi and Hindi, I discovered, that Lata is superior in her notes and clarity of pronunciations than Suman when the song goes in lower notes. We have a habit of comparing only their high notes, and there they do sound very similar off and on. Further, like the Jweller knows the worth of a real diamond and each MD chose whatever was best.

Yes it is true Lata was jealous NOT giving other great singers like Suman Kalyanpur, Hemlata, and others a chance to sing. She wanted a monopoly as female singer.

keep up the good work. for those who dont beleive me ask your elders they will tell te same story..Wah Rafi
yes i totally agree with you. its a nice song but not comparable with the best of lata's songs; for even though summan's voice reminds you of Lata but it lacks the srength and training of lata's voice.
Either you are ignorant about how many "arm twisting" techniques Lata ji employed against other female singers of her times or you are being too naive. She destroyed careers of more than 25 prominent singers (many senior to her, some contemparories and some upcoming ones).
Lets not get into conspiracies and politics. Suman was a great singer unfort could not succeed because she sounded Lataesque, had nothing different to offer like for instance Asha.
The fact remains, she sang many memorable songs and deserved more.
There was a decade when Rafi and Lata were not singing together due to the copyright contoversy.MDs could have used her more with Rafi but it didnt happen.
This is my naive observation as I am not an expert and bollywood buff.
in my view, its not fair to say, if given a chance, many singers would match lata..when she is not singing these days, field is open.. but how many latas did we produce?how many rafis or mukeshs in trms of tonal quality are produced..even today there are people would like to listen to those songs after 40 or more years.can present lot produce such stuff..its too techie these days
i disagree with some of the viewers comment. yes there is competition in india. but all the female singers even the ones mention above were very good, but lata is no doubt is the best female singer, dont forget suman kalyanpur she sounds also like lata. the only singer that is closest to lata appeared with mohammed rafi in his world tour. she sung one song and you couldnt tell the diferrence, her name is christian mukeerge. anil/bhagat/indian/american/actor. i have the album.
I am sorry to say that your 'essay' is written in a bad taste.Your write-up starts with "Kaha jata hay kay"[means you are not sure about whatever that you have written] also you have admitted that you are not sure about Noor Jehan incidence.Madam Noor Jehan is great no doubt but Only a person out of his senses can believe that Lata pressurised her to leave India.Such controversial writing is not expected from a man who assumes the name 'lovehumanity'.
Well ..dun be personal dear. "kaha jata hay" doesnt mean am confident or not but it simply means "i dun wanna give my own opinion NOW" and also it means that like other debateable issues this point needs to be discussed and argued here..and yes "am not sure about Noor Jehan incidence" cuz simply i wasnt there that time :) by that i mean to ask u people to provide information to us.. not to offend to those who dunt know. I didnt want to be dishonest by false opinion about sumthin that i din know.
aur kya controversial issues ko set aside karkay rakh dena loving humanity kehlata hay? agar aisa hota to dunya kay hazaron problems aaj unsolved hotay mere bhai :) its just about decently, amicably and politely reforming the old opinions set by our ancestors..with a chilled mind. Hope now you wont doubt my intentions atleast.I've given you people a plateform to give information from their different sources for our knowledge. If u cant thank me for it then its okay but plz let the people comment
Sahab, aap baat ko kaha se kaha le aaye. But now that you have expressed your 'views',which again are fit for any Dr.Bukhari but not for "lovehumanity",I need to do my bit.
So you don't want to give your own opinion NOW
& still u want to critisize a great personality from your hearsay.Sahab,I too have
heard many ugly things about the personal & proffesional lives many artistes from India &
Pakistan. But what I like is their art & am not interested in these "other things".
yaar life mein 1001 unwanted things hoti hain jinko aap avoid karein to aapka koi loss nahi hota.. so why not ignore the opinions which u think are false. aur celebrity ka apna kuchh personal nahi hota aik stage par aa kar. he/she becomes public property then. people wanna know each n everything about or related to him/her. so my suggestion again wud be either ignore or give you logics on topic.. not on me or my personal nicks or profession etc cuz am not celebrity :)
when d so called talented singers failed 2 match lata dey started playing foul game..It was vani jairam who first raised dis issue. She cdnt compete lata even in south indian movies>her mentor also oved 2 Lata and accepted dat dese r no match for lata..Lata passed on many songs 2 Suman as she felt Suman is very talented.
Always wonder why there was not more healthy competition between Lata and Suman especially that when both were for up for grabs for all the music directors at the same time. Of course both have been superb. Lovely practitioners of the art of singing.
Lata had a big head start. She was already in a strong position. She had a strong and dominant personality and was loved and feared at the same time. Some musicians had to succomb to her at times. Her position was so strong that it was easier to manage without Rafi for a good length of time than without her. Its sad because other potential good female singers did not stand a chance.
Exactly. Like in Cricket circles here, so long as Warnie was around, no one else even if talented like him, say McGill or Hoggs could have opportunities at those levels. Sad side of being available at the same time!
i agree... i always used to wonder... it simply cannot be true that there we no other singers who were no match to Lataji's voice. I myself know of singers who were indeed great. Ever heard of Hemalatha's voice... "Akhiyon Ke Jharokon Se" such a wonderful rendition by her in all the songs in that movie. Vani Jairam is great too. i am a great fan of her and have heard her greatest of songs and i doubt that vani was no match to Lataji. its simply absurd.
there is certainly something fishy why other singers couldn't survive in A class movies when Lataji was reigning. I am trying my best to know, but unfortunately there is very little talked about it.
Vani is also a Living Legend, you would know if you have closely looked into her life, in detail...
I strongly agree that Lataji is extremely talented. no doubt about it. but there are others who are equally good, but were never given a chance to show it to the world .. that is my contention.
but anyways, the topic is closed, just as you wished.... :)
I analyse this way, since Lata(ji) could not afford competetion, she saw to it by hook or crook that no other female singer(sometimes even her own sister Asha)snatch her bread and butter. She also resorted to emotion blackmail, open threats on the concerned people.Needless,as only the best could have survived against her in healthy competetion. But keep in mind that there was no media or other platforms to send the budding artists to Bombay-the main centre.
the hindi movies wouldnt have been the same without latajis unmatched voice. Those who could not match it can ofcourse crib, but NOTHING can stop real talent. I myself are a fan of Ashaji, but I think that in rendition of classical songs, no match for lataji is found , YET.
Even the best specialists know deep inside which of their contemporaries have an edge over them in certain fields they operate in. Same was with Lataji. Marvellous as she has been, her style was no match for sexiness in voice projected from the throat of Ashaji. Agreed? Now Suman's if you observe closely, falls somewhere half way between these two limits, loosing none of the charm. But she had to see the door many a time in competition. Sad but a true story as far as I know.
if u analyse both d voices u will urself see dat suman, though a brilliant singer, never had dat accomplishment of lata.Even asha, though more versatile, never had dat smthng extra dat Lata had.I dont know how a singer can surive in d industry by doing politics for over 60 years and commands d respect of d entire world including her adversaries...
I have heard and read (and agree to an extent) that her voice suited many actresses of the 50's and even 60's. Her very limitations went to become her assets as a voice for the female characters that were the soft, 'ghar-rakhu', ever repressed, ever hankering for their 'suhaag's' wellbeing kind!
Most folks who cannot see (or rather HEAR!)beyond Lata should pause and listen to 'kaali ghata chhaye..' 'aao huzoor tum ko..'; 'mera sundar sapna..', 'thehro zaraa si der to..' by the two greats
Bukhari Saab! Thanks for telling the bitter truth about Lata.
I, for one, am not even crazy about her voice! Too shrill, too thin, too sweet (like sachcharine rather than sugar!) and flat. Of course, over the years, she has sung some numbers very well. Dher saare gaano me kuchh to achchhe honge hi! (continue>>>>)
diwaaneeji, aapne kabhi 'Bole Re Papihara' sunihai... how could it have become such a great hit. somebody entering cinema field for the first time and first song, and it happens to be a super duper hit. But yet she doesnt survive... !!!! its certainly not talent. its something else !!!
"Have you ever seen a waterfall retrace its path?...I have seen it...rather heard it in didi's voice. The tinkling notes of her taan tumble forth like a waterfall plunging down a cliff and then go back exactly the same way."
Dear all- asim, rtkirani, mdazgarkhan, Imirza, Ajit, princekhalid- anyone of you please post the video of this song and also the solo of rafi from same movie- Mujhe tum se muhabbat hai... I wud b grateful!
all u said about lata was done by noorjehan actually and i have read about it ...in a book on noorjehan ..she herself said that she will not allow her daughters to sing because thay can do more better that her and she can never tolerate that ...so jealous .she left india herself because she said that she loved her motherland Punjab ...
thats the way life goes buddy .. main kisi kay kaam aaon ga to koi mere kaam ayega.. aur koi mere kaam na bhi aayay to God mujh say raazi ho aur kuchh nahi chahiay :)
This is a great duet!! Although Lata's best is better than Suman's best, I do think Suman got a raw deal because of Lata. Suman's solo and the duet with Mukesh in Dil Hi to Hai and duet with Rafi in Dil Ek Mandir - are precious gems of music.
Now: Does anyone have Dooj ka Chnad song: Chaand takta hai idhar? i have been looking for it and will be eternally grateful if someone can upload. Thanks a billion in advance!!!
that was the most sensible comment -> Suman got a raw deal because of Lata :)
yeah i have ur song on audio. coming soon here :) meanwhile u wana enjoy a similar song from a great Pak movie Ishq-e-Laila. Plz check here --> youtube com/watch?v=4Er3qUqV3Xw
Yaar ji is geeton ki duniya mein kaisay kaisay motiyoon jaisay naghmay chupay hoyee hein aur QURBAAN jaoon "lovehumanity" per keh hamein aiysa heera geet sunaya hey. Wah bohat original hay aur pehlay kabhi naheen sunaa...Maar dala..... maar he daala!
i think lovehumanity has given very balanced and intelligent reasons. Lata was a great singer and nobody can take that away from her. As was of course Alla Wasaii. But give a little credit to other artists who have amused and entertained us through decades.
Your comment about Lata forcing Noorjehan to leave India is totally baseless. Please check your facts. It can help you and others as well. Spreading rumours or trying to sling mud at a celebrity's image without proper proof or research is an unwarranted act.
first. see how i started my comments by saying --> "Kaha jata hay kay"
had i been present on the occasion when Noor Jehan left India, I wud have commented on my own.
secondly.. jab aap celebrity bantay hain to aapki life public property ban jati hay. us par comments bhi aatay hain aur scandles bhi bantay hain? Kya Lata kay kabhi scandle nahi banay ? Kiyon shadi nahi ki aaj tak us nay ? will u tell me sir i shuold i narrate her scandles :)
charges againts Lata are true...... in fact her sister Asha told in an interview that Lata nver helped Asha while she was in her struggling days but Lata was already an established star....... what more proof u want?.... check the interview as it's in the youtube itself.........
humm.. I remember another interview. Khayyam sahab gave a chance to an actress i think it was Sulakshna Pandit in movie Khandan. Song was "Mana Teri Nazar mein tera pyar hum nahi.. Kaisay kahein kay tere Talabgar hum nahi". She sung it and sung so well that even today its in wish list of ghazal lovers but what happened to her? threatened next day on phone ..and never sang it again.. just acted in a few more movies n had to finish the career abruptly.
I don't agree at all with the "charges" laid against Lata, I do agree that Suman had a charm of her own and it would have been nice if she had sung more. One truly sublime Rafi-Suman duet I don't see in your list is "Parbaton ke peedon par" from Shagoon.
yeah the song is not listed cuz its already posted here on youtube..as regards charges .. its just an opinion yaar..we are not in a court.. i gave my opinion n u gave yours :-) A historic sentence for such occasion is
"I may not accept your opinion but i respect your right to give opinion" Thanx :)
ty for the compliments sir.. u r the inspiration for this song :-) aik jagah Inaam ki access thi usay ye song trace karkay link diya kay mujhay rawana karo. lihaza mp3 send karnay ka credit usay jata hay :-)
and u r rite .. Suman kay itnay khoobsurat songs hain kay samajh nahi aata kya kya upload kiya jayay. Suman kay 33 music directors kay sath Songs ki list ready paRi hay meray samnay is waqt ..lekin ye kambakht youtube itna long text allow nahi karta :-(
doc. what a sweet tune...and suman's vocals suit it like it should be...i thank you very very much for this great duet and all the informations about suman's duets with rafi..film anjana song 'ke jan chali jaye' could be a threat to other singers, im sure...

I don't have the facts about Lataji ruining other playback singer's careers, but, please do not compare Lataji to anyone.
Her superiority can never be matched. I mean its one thing fan commenting based on preferences and another by esteemed knowledgeable musicians.

No doubt Lata was a great singer, but her selfish and self centered ego destroyed career of many female singers. Let me name few of them:
Sudha Malhotra.
Sharda sang in "Suraj"
Vani Jayram sang in "Guddi".
Anuradha Paudwal.
She even for some time did not get along with Rafi. It was her own way to control male singers and blocked female singers to shine.

suman kalyanpur sounds like lata mangeshkar
ktby1 3 years ago 4
yes i totally agree with you. its a nice song but not comparable with the best of lata's songs; for even though summan's voice reminds you of Lata but it lacks the srength and training of lata's voice.
abiehakhawaja 3 years ago
I Think it is a case of ""grapes are sour"" The other singers could not cut it in the industry and so it was easier for them to make
LATA Mangeskar the wicked witch.
If they had the talent they could have suceeded.
Asmalata 3 years ago
well said asmalata, i completely agree with you. it's a case of 'grapes are sour'

Either you are ignorant about how many "arm twisting" techniques Lata ji employed against other female singers of her times or you are being too naive. She destroyed careers of more than 25 prominent singers (many senior to her, some contemparories and some upcoming ones).
oldHFMfan 2 years ago
Yes,we have been blessed with so many g-r-e-a-t singers since Lataji "retired".
jimmie3232 2 years ago
Lets not get into conspiracies and politics. Suman was a great singer unfort could not succeed because she sounded Lataesque, had nothing different to offer like for instance Asha.
The fact remains, she sang many memorable songs and deserved more.
There was a decade when Rafi and Lata were not singing together due to the copyright contoversy.MDs could have used her more with Rafi but it didnt happen.
This is my naive observation as I am not an expert and bollywood buff.

WOW!she had very very sweet voice.

in my view, its not fair to say, if given a chance, many singers would match lata..when she is not singing these days, field is open.. but how many latas did we produce?how many rafis or mukeshs in trms of tonal quality are produced..even today there are people would like to listen to those songs after 40 or more years.can present lot produce such stuff..its too techie these days

D.P.RAJADHYAKSHA.
dipiaar 3 years ago
Well ..dun be personal dear. "kaha jata hay" doesnt mean am confident or not but it simply means "i dun wanna give my own opinion NOW" and also it means that like other debateable issues this point needs to be discussed and argued here..and yes "am not sure about Noor Jehan incidence" cuz simply i wasnt there that time :) by that i mean to ask u people to provide information to us.. not to offend to those who dunt know. I didnt want to be dishonest by false opinion about sumthin that i din know.
lovehumanity 3 years ago
aur kya controversial issues ko set aside karkay rakh dena loving humanity kehlata hay? agar aisa hota to dunya kay hazaron problems aaj unsolved hotay mere bhai :) its just about decently, amicably and politely reforming the old opinions set by our ancestors..with a chilled mind. Hope now you wont doubt my intentions atleast.I've given you people a plateform to give information from their different sources for our knowledge. If u cant thank me for it then its okay but plz let the people comment

Dear Dr.Bukhari,
Sahab, aap baat ko kaha se kaha le aaye.
Pakistan. But what I like is their art & am not interested in these "other things".
dipiaar 3 years ago
yaar life mein 1001 unwanted things hoti hain jinko aap avoid karein to aapka koi loss nahi hota.. so why not ignore the opinions which u think are false. aur celebrity ka apna kuchh personal nahi hota aik stage par aa kar. he/she becomes public property then. people wanna know each n everything about or related to him/her. so my suggestion again wud be either ignore or give you logics on topic.. not on me or my personal nicks or profession etc cuz am not celebrity :)

when d so called talented singers failed 2 match lata dey started playing foul game..It was vani jairam who first raised dis issue.

Lovely practitioners of the art of singing.

very true
lovehumanity 3 years ago
Lata had a big head start. She was already in a strong position. She had a strong and dominant personality and was loved and feared at the same time. Some musicians had to succomb to her at times. Her position was so strong that it was easier to manage without Rafi for a good length of time than without her. Its sad because other potential good female singers did not stand a chance.
Sholay48 3 years ago

Vani Jairam is great too. i am a great fan of her and have heard her greatest of songs and i doubt that vani was no match to Lataji. its simply absurd.
funguy200679 3 years ago
there is certainly something fishy why other singers couldn't survive in A class movies when Lataji was reigning.

funguy200679 3 years ago
I analyse this way, since Lata(ji) could not afford competetion, she saw to it by hook or crook that no other female singer(sometimes even her own sister Asha)snatch her bread and butter. She also resorted to emotion blackmail, open threats on the concerned people.Needless,as only the best could have survived against her in healthy competetion. But keep in mind that there was no media or other platforms to send the budding artists to Bombay-the main centre.
iamomnivorous 3 years ago
Salam,
the hindi movies wouldnt have been the same without latajis unmatched voice. Those who could not match it can ofcourse crib, but NOTHING can stop real talent. I myself are a fan of Ashaji, but I think that in rendition of classical songs, no match for lataji is found , YET.
shirinjaan 3 years ago 2
walaikukums salam..
yes.agreed on principle.
lovehumanity 3 years ago

Most folks who cannot see (or rather HEAR!)beyond Lata should pause and listen to 'kaali ghata chhaye..' 'aao huzoor tum ko..'; 'mera sundar sapna..', 'thehro zaraa si der to..' by the two greats
musicparast 3 years ago
Bukhari Saab! Thanks for telling the bitter truth about Lata.
I, for one, am not even crazy about her voice! Too shrill, too thin, too sweet (like sachcharine rather than sugar!) and flat. Of course, over the years, she has sung some numbers very well. Dher saare gaano me kuchh to achchhe honge hi! (continue>>>>)

Lata Mangeshkar
...a living legend...
"Have you ever seen a waterfall retrace its path?...I have seen it...rather heard it in didi's voice. The tinkling notes of her taan tumble forth like a waterfall plunging down a cliff and then go back exactly the same way."

Thanks a billion in advance!!!

i think lovehumanity has given very balanced and intelligent reasons.

Spreading rumours or trying to sling mud at a celebrity's image without proper proof or research is an unwarranted act.
pqrxyzus 4 years ago
two things to say..
first. see how i started my comments by saying --> "Kaha jata hay kay"
had i been present on the occasion when Noor Jehan left India, I wud have commented on my own.
secondly.. jab aap celebrity bantay hain to aapki life public property ban jati hay. us par comments bhi aatay hain aur scandles bhi bantay hain? Kya Lata kay kabhi scandle nahi banay ? Kiyon shadi nahi ki aaj tak us nay ? will u tell me sir i shuold i narrate her scandles :)

charges againts Lata are true...... in fact her sister Asha told in an interview that Lata nver helped Asha while she was in her struggling days but Lata was already an established star....... what more proof u want?.... check the interview as it's in the youtube itself.........
soumyasbh 4 years ago
humm.. I remember another interview. Khayyam sahab gave a chance to an actress i think it was Sulakshna Pandit in movie Khandan. Song was "Mana Teri Nazar mein tera pyar hum nahi.. Kaisay kahein kay tere Talabgar hum nahi". She sung it and sung so well that even today its in wish list of ghazal lovers but what happened to her? threatened next day on phone ..and never sang it again.. just acted in a few more movies n had to finish the career abruptly.
lovehumanity 4 years ago
I don't agree at all with the "charges" laid against Lata, I do agree that Suman had a charm of her own and it would have been nice if she had sung more. One truly sublime Rafi-Suman duet I don't see in your list is "Parbaton ke peedon par" from Shagoon.

yeah the song is not listed cuz its already posted here on youtube..as regards charges .. its just an opinion yaar..we are not in a court.. i gave my opinion n u gave yours :-) A historic sentence for such occasion is
