This is absolutely gorgeous. It is so very haunting and beautiful. This was the first song that I had heard of Prokofiev's. It made me want to hear more of his music, and now I am an avid Prokofiev fan. I love the bass in this.
@trp3141592 really? I played this the second semester of my college orchestra. the only piece from the kije suite that should be in Christmas in my pinion is troika for good reasons wouldn't you agree?
i have the original 'dream of the blue turtles' album by sting and he mentions in the liner notes that he took the theme from prokofiev...he managed to make it work as a pop song.
Really curious about the string bass solo. My recording has a bass singer solo instead. I've even practiced this solo a bit. Which is the original version?
trying to find how to pronounce kije properly for one, and two, in my search for one, learnt that all this work is for a film score, if that's right, but i am doubtful as there is not even one utube clip, let alone having the joy of watching for free here in eight easy parts. this comment was meant to be a question, but seem to have written myself into a corner and way to laZY to make amends...so, what about the film of lieutenant Kije, (how do you say that)????? thx if u really u know & tell
@lestliness but he chose a wonderful piece to sample, and he himself made a wonderful tune to this melody. art is art. it's fitting, would you not say, that he took a Russian's song to make the Russians track :D life is too short to judge who took what from who...the original is as beautiful as the Sting remake. i just found out myself from a friend and co-producer that this is the original. better to sample a good track than to create an original piece of shit.
@robzombie954 Haha, I'm not sure I agree with you entirely, however you absolutely deserve an award for that cut (...urpentine and piss on a forest fire). Which by the way, I'm going to rip from you without any shame whatsoever.. oh the irony.
@robzombie954 Haha, I'm not sure I agree with you entirely, however you deserve an award for such a brilliant cut (".. turpentine and piss on a forest fire."). That made me laugh and I intend to rip this off of you without shame... oh the irony. haha
I sight-read this yesterday evening with West London Sinfonia! It is so beautiful, and not too hard to sight-read on the cello, which is always a good thing!
For those curious, this is a recording from 1963 or '64 (released on LP in '64, then on CD in '89) by Eugene Ormandy and the Philadelphia Orchestra.... one of the best.

This haunting and mystic melody is finding its way into the genre of US Christmas music.

@dragonreborn888 The string bass :) My favorite instrument of choice. I love playing this solo on it so much, it speaks to me.

@lestliness Sting can drink a gallon of turpentine and piss on a forest fire. Ripping off such an amazing piece.
