Yes the restoration for 604 has been stopped due to a lack of money. The state of NC was giving the land and buildings by a donation from the railroad. But the most of the rolling stock is own by North Carolina Transportation museum Foundation. A nonprofit organization that is incharge of collect money to restore the rolling stock.
Can anyone confirm or deny this. Last time I was at the Little Choo Choo model train shop across the street from Spencer, I was told that the restoration of 604 has been stopped and there are no plans for 1925 either. I understand that it's a state run museum and funding can be problematic, but if that is true, I will have very little interest in returning to visit without operating steam.
I am lucky I rode behind her in 2004 when she got her brand new coat of paint. She is no doubt the most beautiful shay locomotive in the world. It's not only because of her appearence, but what the museum went through to restore her. 1925 looked like the saddest thing before she was restored, but after 10 years, she was turned into a beautiful machine. I sure hope the museum gets her running again within the next 15 years.
Yea it sounds like a N&W Hooter. Watched the video the first time real late at night. But I do know the 611's whistle was used at some point near the end of the shay's op. We had the ACL #501 running two weekends ago.
i went to the nctm yesterday. i wish the steam engines were operational. how much longer will it be before # 604 is running? does the atlantic coast line diesel run?
Nice video, bad whistle. sounds like one of those interurban air whistles, but worse.

It's too bad there wasn't enough steam pressure to blow the whistle like it did in N&W 611. Because that is the original whistle that was on the 611
