He belongs to a tradition where the quest is after the magic, the poetic idea, something that is "behind" the physical notes. The "real" sound is just a mirror to a spiritual event. And after all, isn't THIS the aspiration of the whole project of "high" classical music?
Only the great Alfred Cortot could play this way. Yet according to one of his students Gina Bachauer, he had to work very hard to achieve his results. This is evident from the exercises he wrote for the 24 Chopin Etudes. (Salabert Edition). Thanks for posting.
@stephenTGV Yes, his exercises are quite...interesting. :P
I have Op. 10 book (I can't find Op. 25) and I must say, these exercises are quite hard, and very time consuming. But, funny enough, my piano teacher has given me similar exercises for other pieces. His rhythmic exercises are identical to what my piano teacher has given me for many other works.
But some of his arpeggios that he makes you do with these odd fingerings....very interesting. ;)
