Big dogs are aptly named "gentle giants". My Leonberger from years back was the biggest thing anyone had ever seen, and he was also the sweetest. The breed was known to be perfectly calm and tender around week-old kittens and babies, and made for the perfect laid-back friend. I miss him to pieces.

@MsDarkblade we had a newfi growing up. I was quite young and on the front lawn and a man started walking across the street towards me. Before my mom could get down the hill from the backyard (it was in the country) the dog sped down the hill and sat between me and the man growling. She also used to herd us when we went swimming so we didn't swim out too far. Hands down the BEST dog for kids

There is nothing more precious then the laughter of a child. Both the little boy and the dog are beautiful. That being said, I will say I was nervous, I have owned and bred and owned large (Anatolians/Kangals) dogs, whom I trusted. But I would never allow a baby to get down on the same or lower level as the dog. We as humans tend to ignore or forget, that this is an animal and no matter if it has never shown signs of aggression, it just takes a second. And then, the human is hurt/dead. JMO

@ClanMurray57 Newfoundlands are actually extremely family-friendly. That are big lap dogs and are very docile in nature. Newfoundlands were even known as "the nanny dog" for the fact that they are so good with children. If you ever meet a well-raised newfoundland you will know what I mean.

Newfoundland dogs are very smart and protective. There's a particular story I remember where one dived into the ocean to save a child.
