i just seen a regulair garter snake on monday we were watching my dogs play outside and i look on the ground about a foot behind my foot a garter snake was slithering behind me i jumped a little but that was only becuause it was just so sudden and he caught me off guard my dad laughed at me though
i got a blue garter snake yesterday it very small will it grow and i dont no if its a boy or girl trying to find reasherch about it but cant find anything can anyone help me wid my quistions
No, if I'd done that I'd have been safe. I tried to grab her safely as to not hurt the snake, since I knew I wouldn't jerk if she bit me, and she did. I just didn't move. She let go rather quickly - it was more of a test to see if that strategy would work for her. It didn't.
I live in Texas and have never seen a garter that big. That is awesome! I like your comments about snake bites. It's always best to try and stay calm and not jerk no matter the animal. I work in a vet clinic and I have lots of white spots of scar tissue. Rather that than missing chunks.
I missed that comment? I'm approving them all; I'm not sure where that was said. At any rate, don't worry folks, she was re-released alive and well. Gravid, to boot.
This one didn't turn blue, it was a Blue Garter Snake. They're native to Florida. My mom used to ghost write herpetology books; so I trust her as a source.
Actually my mum used to ghost write books for Herpetologists with PhD's so when she released the snake for me and told me it was a Blue Garter Snake, I believed her. She checked Merck's Manual (field guide) just to be sure. Thanks for the tip, tho, amateurs often confuse regular garters for blues.
I wasn't saying it was not a blue Garter, you're definately right there. my comment was directed at Drathian666 who seems to think you are letting your snake die... Just making a point about why else a snake might appear blue.
My apologies. I've grown used to the idea that teh interwebs is not the same crowd as the herp meetings my mom took me to when I was younger, and it's hard to spot our own ;)
wow that snake looks awesome...i was lookin for snakes this moning in my backyard and managed to find a baby snapping turtle, snd theres no pond in my yard lol
Gorgeous! I hear wild Florida Blues can be pretty snippy. Makes even more sense if she was gravid! We've got a year-old captive-bred FBG, I just uploaded a video of her catching goldfish. Can't wait 'til she's this big!
Remember, nonvenemous Florida snakes are in much greater danger than you if they bite you - you will probably jerk in response and tear out some of their teeth, which can cause an infection in their mouths (mouth rot) and kill them after release, or even in captivity. So never tempt a snake to bite you for fun.
Beautiful snake, glad you released her. About 5 years ago I had a bunch of red-sided garters living under my house, it was amazing to see the breeding clusters.
This female snake turned out to be pregnant, which was why she was so large and aggressive. My mother released her and she is still living underneath the house. She has been spotted twice since her release back into the suburban wild.

Actually the most common they'll get a blue hue is before they shed when they get "dusty"... but you left that out.

Cool snake! Despite living in Australia, I've never seen a snake in my garden. I've had lizards and such, though.

Why did that snake cause a puncture when it bit? Look at my attached video.
wst 5 years ago
Bite puncture on me or you? I didn't see you get bit - the marks on me were actually like acupuncture needle pricks - just barely broke the skin.
