It's kind of weird to see Matt Frewer in Watchman and Eureka. I just sit there thinking "But that's Max Headroom..." I was quite young during the reign of Max Headroom and the first time I saw Matt Frewer on tv I was a little weirded out. Being young and naive I thought Max Headroom was a computer generated image... It never occurred to me that he was a real person. It really is amazing to see what technology was capable of even back in the 80's.
TimThis: hate to correct you, but the "moving lines" backgrounds were early CGI rendered on a Commodore Amiga. That's the full extent of CGI in this product, though. Max's appearence is achieved through late,x apparatus, and his trademarke "stuttering" effectc were all practical effects achieved through editing.
Oh man I remember Max Headroom!! This is fantastic.
What's more fantastic is the fact that you were able to claim copyright over this without Youtube cracking down on you by wither pulling this video or shutting down your account!
Max Headroom's real name was Matt Frewer (recently in the movie 50/50 with Joseph Gordon-Levitt). They really only "partially" digitized him - it is mostly his own voice and facial expressions, with some of the "edges" and hair added in.
@jamdad13 It's not digitized at all. It's just post weird editing. That's latex make up and the even the early backgrounds were not computer generated, probably green screened.
@Wesley683 No, it was supposed to look that way but it was Matt Frewer in prosthetics and a fibreglass suit, then the stuttering and clipping was added in post production. Pretty effective!
Extract from Wiki, my memory not as good as it used to be ;)
The background story provided for the Max Headroom character presents a dystopic look at a run-down near-future dominated by television and large corporations. Max Headroom was shown to have been created from the memories of Edison Carter. The character's name came from the last thing Carter saw during a vehicular accident that put him into a coma: A bar with a sign warning of low clearance, marke

@ZyxthePest Tim and Eric use crappy middle-school green-screen editing techniques and call it funny. This guy is funny all by himself, and the techniques only add to his personality. So yeah, talentless hacks.
@chrisz71 That's the clock used by TV-am, which used to be a tv station in the UK, so I'm guessing the clip is a recording of one of their broadcasts.
I just figured out that Max is a fucking Canadian . They are fucking everywhere, something must be done. There are almost a million of them up there and they are breeding like flipping rabbits.

This man is called Matt Frewer, he was in Lawnmower Man 2. Are you all trying to say this is Jim Carrey or saying that Carrey adopted his character? I think Jim Carrey would have got inspiration from Matt Frewer and many others.
you just know that someday someone is going to try and bring Max Headroom back from the dead. and it will start the technological apocalypse with Max Headroom as their leader. All hail Lord Headroom! XD
@dabob720 That's all part of his bizarre charm :D I'm a HUGE fan but I can still find moments here and there creepy - especially when he looks directly into the camera. His eyes are so human (of course, since he was a real actor!), but in an apparently artificial and "robotic"-looking face, and I think that weird contrast spooks a lot of people. Still, occasionally creepy or not (and I'm sure it was deliberate), Max's cancellation will always be one of the greatest losses to satirical TV :(
@NellJSmith It's that point where something looks realistic enough to be unsettling, but not so realistic that it seems normal. Lots of early computer rendering is like this, especially when the characters seem to "snap to" poses or are drawn in a way that makes them seem almost, but not quite, human.
Sounds like Jim Carrey? Yeah, because Matt Frewer sort of sounds like Jim Carrey. Before I realized Frewer was Max Headroom from way back in the day, when I saw him more recently on a couple Zack Snyder movies, I thought to myself, "why does this guy remind me a little bit of Jim Carrey?"
Wow, I never realised back then that Max Headroom DID sound like Jim Carrey so much. Now that I hear him again, well, no wonder these 2 are compared so much.
@MrDonkeydong155 As others have said: it's actually Jim Carrey (well, his earlier comic persona, anyway) who sounds like Max Headroom, since Max came first! Max probably seems strange (and dated!) to today's teens/twenties generation, but those of us who were your age in the 80s, when Max originated, remember him as being REALLY new and different (although done with a real actor - CGI wasn't that good then!). Anyway - I don't wonder Carrey was inspired by Max. More popular than you'd think.
@NellJSmith ... Having said that, mind you (ran out of space above!), I happen to think that Jim Carrey's earlier, "wacky", comic performances, although they gained him world fame and earned him millions, are actually way inferior to his far more serious later performances, in, for example, "The Cable Guy" and one of my all-time favourite films, "The Truman Show". Carrey has true talent and is worth FAR more than being remembered as "Ace Ventura". I hope he gets more great roles soon :)
For you young'ins: Max was supposed to be a computer simulation of a person, as computers and real robots were somewhat new inventions at this time. His repeating himself at frames and same visual images were supposed to be 'evidence' of this, along with video graphic lines in background. This was way before advanced CGI graphics. In reality he was an actor pretending this. He had a quirky humorous personality and would co-star in tv shows, movies, shorts, commercials and then later the hos
