No, they were hip to something being very wrong when they saw the building leanding and making noises. Firefighters tend to be wary of these things since many have lost their lives because of collapsing structures. If the fire chief sees signs of a building in distress, do you honestly think he would forego an evacuation because he doesn't know the scientific reasoning behind it?

- even if it reaches 1500°C it will buckle more likely because it looses strenth and the force it will be able to direct to a neighbouring beams will decrease
- it will transfer heat to neighbouring beams that act as a cooling device.

@1500°C you have delta-Fe molecules, and no matter what % of carbon in it...
It is most likely liquid at that temerature.
The last delta-Fe molecules become liquid @ around 1540°C, even if no carbon is in the alloy.
