I saw the movie for the first time and it interested me to the point of wanting to know which country in African my ancestors are from. I would also like to know which tribe
I think that what we are missing is the fact that Black and White are not races, but colors. Caucasoid, Negroid, Mongoloid are the only valid ethnic classifications. What we call a Black person is actually an ethnic African regardless of where they were born. I was born in Jamaica and am a US citizen but my ethnic identity is African, genetically. There is neither a Jamaican nor American gene.
The movie "Skin" is a must-see drama that tells the story of Sandra Laing. It is very touching and moving and unfortunately, based on actual events. Only one can imagine being in her shoes and having had experience being loved, separated, and so forth an so on. I highly recommend you watch it.
Apparently she and one of her brothers have recently been in touch by phone, but they haven't met again face-to-face. She said they talked like brother and sister and hopes they will meet once more. I also think the Cosby show hinted at this with the pigmentation range of the children. So much wasted time and lives spent on superficial constructs. Thanks for this film. Also see "Skin" (2008).
I would whoop both of her brother's ass. Stupidass bastards, how come they don't want to see their sister? They've got the same damn blood. PS I'm black, shoot I'm even Nigerian lol.
Ok., to make it short: Plenty of genes contribute to the colour of the skin. These genes do not follow clearly the Mendel rules and many of them have not yet been identified so far. You can read this everywhere, in scientific literature and in the internet. So what?
What a sad story. Imagine how lonely she must've felt. It just goes to show how you can't judge a book by its cover, and it also shows just how arbitrary and unnecessary racial classifications are.
@topherh33 You my dear Imbecile are a PRIME example of an IGNORAMUS!!! You have NO IDEA of what you're talking about, and apparently KNOW NOTHING about genetics, so why expose and subject others to your ignorance? I have witnessed with my OWN eyes, and know 1st hand that this is not only possible, but also that IT DOES happen! I have seen on multiple occasions 2 dark skinned individuals produce not only what appears to be a Caucasian child,
@kaijahzmom actually YOU are the ignorant bafoon. I never said that two dark skinned ppl cant have a light skinned child. WHAT I DID SAY IS, two light skinned, light eyed ppl, cant have a dark skinned, dark eyed child, THAT is genetically improbable. The chances are about 100 billion to one.
They are two completely different things.
Maybe you should go back and educate yourself a little, before speaking.
@topherh33 I'll tell you why, because you're a mentally inferior CRETIN, with absolutely NO BASIS, No comprehension of FACTS NOR Genetics! Your statistics are just a figment of your imagination and are WAY OFF BASE, and are worth just as much as your opinion, spewing out of your Anus of Brains!!!
@kaijahzmom LOL well my degree in biology, would say otherwise:) Try stating with looking up the differences between dominant and recessive genes, and i think you'll see what im talking about. Then try looking at allele variations in halogroups. This information can be found on many websites. And as far as expert opinions are concerned, I havent seen any experts who have been interviewed on this subject.
@topherh33 WHO are you, the Nutty Professor now? Duh, if it could happen in the case of ONE race, then it would be indicative of it happening in the other! OR did your narrow mind need a comprehension check? Who named you the "Authority" on the matter and why weren't you interviewed on your expert opinion?
@topherh33 actually it is quite probable ....as long as the lighter parents carry alleles for dark skin. in fact most people carry alleles for various skin complexions and it all depends on which two alleles the child receives. if exposed enough to different people you will see this quite often. while interning at a public school i've met quite a few latino children who are both dark skinned or light skinned with blue eyes and their parents are quite different.
@amccleno LOL ok well since all light skinned people have ancestors who are dark skinned, which has been proven through genetic science, that means all light skinned people carry allels for dark skin, and can have dark skinned children. LOL this is your logic not mine.
Nice try but your logic, and science is very flawed.
@topherh33 i don't understand what the confusion is. light skinned people can have ancestors who were both dark and light...depending on migration., lets keep in mind natural selection amongst genetics. all humans have a common ancestor who was of dark complexion. just because your alleles don't match your phenotype doesn't mean that they still don't exist.
@amccleno Thats because you dont COMPLETELY understand how dominant and recessive genes work.
To put it simply, once a recessive gene becomes prominant you no longer carry the dominant gene, if you did then everyone would have dark hair and dark eyes. Dominant and recessive doesnt just refer to, all things being equal, one gene dominanting over the other.
@topherh33 Let's look at a concrete example like the sickle cell or thalassemia trait in hemoglobin...both recessive. If you have one allele for it, your offspring can also receive that allele and so on. Plus you're missing the point, that skin complexion is not 100% dominant or recessive. Haven't you seen cases of many interracial families having offspring with complexions that vary significantly? Everyone doesn't have dark skin and dark eyes because of natural selection and interbreeding.
@amccleno yes light skin is a recessive gene. There are many allels that cause different variations in color or complextion but most are dominant types.
@topherh33 alrighty Topher. it's allelEs with an E and complexion without the T btw. but i guess grammar is like religion so whatever. anyway, i am just saying that i have seen a light person originate from dark parents (on more than one occasion), not that i saw Santa or something. ciao.
@amccleno " i don't understand what the confusion is. light skinned people can have ancestors who were both dark and light "
All light skinned people have ancestors who were originally dark skinned. Light skinned people evolved, through natual selection, to have light skin. because two light skinned people cant have a dark skinned child.
@topherh33 Where is your proof? Have you seriously never seen a dark skinned child born to light skinned parents? And, in evolution, genetic mutations are carried through generations and light people are not strictly only procreating with other light people over generations and generations, so they carry genetic traits for dark skin as well.
@amccleno Where is my proof? have you taken any college level biology classes? or for that matter any high school level classes? Do you understand how dominant and recessive genes work? and noo I have never seen a DARK skinned child born to LIGHT skinned parents. atleast not that wasnt proven false later on. Ive seen children, who have had a tan, and whos parents didnt, because their parents worked in an office and never went outside, but thats not what you are claiming.
@topherh33 yes i have and am currently taking my final biology level course, i am sorry that you've never witnessed this occurrence. sorry, i did mix up the light and dark, i've seen it both ways: once in a Latino family and another time in an Italian family. both large families with multiple children varying in complexion.
@kaijahzmom For two light skinned light, light eyed ppl to have a dark skinned, dark eyed baby, it would have to be due to a genetic mutation, not from genetic lineage. The chances of that to have happened are about 100 billion to one. and for that to have happened twice in one family? Well my calculator doesnt even have that many digits. Its a good thing her mother is dead cause its going to be incredibly embarrassing when the truth comes out, if it ever does.
@topherh33 but a Caucasian child that has blonde hair and blue eyes. Genes skip generations. When two parents are carrying the "blue eyed" gene, the evidence of the genes will appear sometimes 3 and 4 generations down the line! THIS can and DOES occur in a child of ANY race
@1947Coconut did you not hear her sate that while they were trying to reestablish her white race, there were blood test done to prove that she was their child? Her story is very inspiring and motivational, I wish you would take the time to realize rather than basing your ignorant comments on her skin color.
@1974Coconut Look at any county that has had diffrent groups of people migrating their, eg. any country in the americas,(especially the more mixed ones) it is actually quite common and not that rare, siblings can come out diffrent colours and features. The only diffrence is that sandra laing came out quite a bit diffrent to her parents/siblings. Her parents where simply both mixed race(but very european looking), who created mixed race children(who where more african looking). Its that simple.
@sha08sha901 the tests of that time could only say that it was possible based on blood type. They could not say for sure, but they could exclude certain blood types. To know for sure, she could get dna tests now with her brothers to see if they are full or half, but that isn't going to happen because they won't speak to her. I'm not sure the dna is the big issue here anyway. That man loved her and claimed her as his own for years, so he was her father; the only father she ever knew.
@1974Coconut incorrect this is very plausable, 'Afrikaners' are bascially mixed race (but strongly european) indviduals who look fully european. Her 2 africkaner parents both possed some african DNA and passed it on to their children. Sandra just happen to have come out significanlty darker than her parents, plus you can see that her brothers also had some african DNA, however it was not as pysically noticable. Look at racial mixed countries(brazil) siblings can come out darker or lighter.
@1974Coconut These things happen. Get over it! You've learned nothing. Do some research. Her children's race does not solve anything. Just because you've never come across it doesn't mean it doesn't happen.
Just watched this movie today, it's sad that her two brothers want nothing to do with her....it's 2011 for God's sake! Either one or both parents had African blood OR she is the product of one white parent & one black parent.
If they had dug a little further they would have seen that the father is the one with the African ancestry. Just a theory. Sandra favors her father, who looks like my cousin Dave.
KeeKee377. No, in the 60's her father was tested w available science which was simple blood TYPE, NOT genome sequence. Blood typing ONLY proved her father could not be excluded from possibley being her father. In 2011, genetic sequencing goes far beyond "blood type" and it can prove w 99.999% surety that someone IS the father, or sibling. If you would like to operate soley on technology available in the 60's don't use your computer or most any device and don't go to a hospital.
shame on sandra's two brothers. if they really wanted to put this all to rest they would have met up with their sister and patched up what the parents would not.
When I was first born I was born a white color. When my mom took me home family members asked are you sure you have the right child. My mom is Carmel skinned and my dad is dark skinned. However as I got older, my skin turned darker. My Nana is brown skinned and my Grand dad is brown skinned but my mom turned out to be the same color as my grand father. One of my aunts turned out to be dark skinned and the other turned out to be light skinned.
It is easy to remove all doubt via currently available genetic test methods - since her siblings are living. People that "know" or "firmly believe" her parents are/were her biological parents are to blind to "see" why their thinking impedes science. What this person went through has nothing to do w scientific facts, or lack of. A "throw-back" of multiple dominant traits is extremely rare - if not yet unknown to occur. I would think scientist around the world would be very interested.
@Mojave4ever I suppose close enough attention wasn't paid. They did the testing before reclassifying her as white using both her parents blood. Yes, my friend, science proved the facts ;-)

@Mojave4ever You are right they didnt exist back then but nor did a white man accept the black skin color and would have killed his wife or had her had arrested for violating the so-called immortality law back then. But more so because whites resist the fact that they are related to black people, don't you think by now the actual DNA test have been done? I have a cousin of whom passes for white and not many know shes really black. The white family tree has been shook and a black baby was born
@KeeKee3377 No matter what prejudice you as an individual have against white people, or individual whites have against "fill in the blank", etc., an individual's "color preferences" will not change the "science". I can locate no evidence that a current DNA test was performed which is surprising. BTW, it is possible for 2 blck/wht mix parents to have a white or very light baby b/c the traits are recessive, but not vice-versa. Multiple genes are involved - so the latter nears impossible.

@Mojave4ever Your science...maybe not but, but in actual science, its possible. As I said...you obviously are having problem with undestanding that all man descended from one and are all related. This is evidence of that but I wont battle with you any further. It just is what it is ;-)
@KeeKee3377 I was unaware this was a battle. I have no idea why you believe you are familiar w my level of familiarity and understanding w the various scientific theories as well as religious beliefs that put forth the idea that all of man-kind came from a single individual. Sandra's DNA doesn't prove any such theories or beliefs and is about as relavent as bubble gum. You seem to believe that engaging in "racism" is a wonderful practice for all people, except for those w white colored skin.
I am living proof this happens. I am 100% colombian born to parents that look damn near white and I came out dark, most ppl think I'm dominican or black. Anyways my brother is fair like my parents and I'm darker like my great great great grandparents my daugther came out very fair with dirty blonde hair...so ummm for those who doubt....it absolutely does happen. My family is a crayon box full of love no matter the color :-)
@Superseadragon very true but I keep it simple and say colombian since that's what my parents are and my birth certificate says hispanic but i get wut u sayin papa :-)
@justebania This is a common occurrence throughout the United States amongst the Hamitic populace where at least over 35% of them have a European forefather, just like me as my father is light and my mother is brown, and they had 11 children... now 2 came out darkskin, 2 came out brown skin, yet the rest of us came out lightskin...
@MrYetzchaq wow how kool...it's so hot to see families that are all mixed up lol it's a sign that reminds us of the progress we've made...but wow 11 kids how fun that must have been...is ur family hispanic??
Citizenjosefk is correct (and I am a woman of color BTW). Anyone that has taken basic college Biology should know that inherited traits may be dominant, recessive, or incompletely dominant. The genes that control skin color are the latter, meaning that a child will have a skin color between that of the parents. The chances that Sandra came from white parents is laughable at best. The fact "they" had two black offspring makes it even more obvious something else was likely occurring.
Its not true she couldn't be born that way. In the movie they said that a certain percentage of Afrikans have the genes that can cause the anomaly to happen. You never know. I have friends where everyone has dark hair but one is very fair with bright red hair. Mom didn't have an affair. It is back in the family line. These things just happen sometimes.
i saw the movie SKINS and i was like, wow thats unusual. and then the dad calls other people kaffirs. i'l like I'm glad you aint my dad, because i have a female friend who is black and so what and if he had called her a Kaffir, i would get my baseball bat and hit his mouth so fucking hard i would have knocked ALL his teeth out!! DONT EVER CALL ANYBODY A KAFFIR!! THAT IS RACIST! AND GOD MADE all of us. God created us EQUAL!
I'm going to go out on a limb....Since many ppl seem to think the mom was unfaithful, I suggest that the illegitimate child is the first born son. We all agree that IF Sandra was the illegitimate child, a second would not have been conceived. Both parents would need to have the "throwback" gene evidenced in Sandra and her younger brother. 1 time affair = 1 white son.

There is only one race, the HUMAN RACE. I just find being DA amusing.

My heart was touched by the movie and this documentary. I have family with fair skin and I understand her experiences. My aunt looked white when she was a girl and she is black. But my point is that its what is in your heart that matters. The 'Skin' is just a shell, your blood in your veins looks just like mine. We are just blessed to be here.
Best Wishes to Sandra and her family. Your beautiful no matter what you're classified as :-) ps my moms name is Saundra
Im probably very wrong seeing how I am ignorant when it comes to biology and what not but I would assume maybe this is evolution at its best those with darker skin are adapted better for the sun they were living in africa @kanun08 I read in an article that her father did a paternity test and he was indeed the father also "negroid" is not a very Politicaly correct term for Africans or people of African descent its very outdated and I would say offensive to some people
There's no way a child with can be born from both white parents with such a negroid features, unless the mom had something to do with neighbors. A fenomenon that happens all the time when you are surrounded by a grop (regardless of white race). She simply liked someone in the neighborhood.
@libfinest100 It isn't impossible for 2 white people to parent a characteristically "black" child. If the genes are in the family's background they can surface at anytime, and since there is no conformation that they were of "pure white decent" it is quite possible that there could have been black genes somewhere back in their family. The melanin pigment is just like the pigment that colors eyes, or hair, 2 blonde haired, blue eyed people whose parents are the same could have a brunette child.
Using your same logic it would be impossible for two black people to have a baby with very little melanin and is much lighter than them, but this happens all the time. Im sure your argument would be that they probably have white blood in them somewhere, EXACTLY, just like Sandra's parents had a black relative somewhere in their gene pool and produced a child that looked like one of their black relatives
my heart goes out to this beautiful woman i see the movie skin for the 1st time and i had to google her. Its crazy man you can clearly see this woman still holds this stuff inside her she seems unsure of herself talking with her head down i wish she could get some consueling because she needs it>
@RBG83ify Why??? My family and I are black but most of our family has yellow and white skin. My grandma has light white skin. My parents are dark skin and I came out looking mix with gold hair and green eyes. My parents friends tease my parents and told them, "why did you still a baby from a white familiy??? You better return her." They always call me white and yellow girl. Most people will people will ask me which one of my parents is black or white. I have white, black, and indian in my blood.
@kitabare76 how when the blood test said they were her parents? And I will never believe a white woman back in the 50s would sleep around with a black african, and her husband not finding out..and let it happen three times! ha, ur funny.
@2sassyforya one of the articles I read stated that the tests were "inconclusive", he could be the father. I see the online photos and there is no resemblance from the father. If there were photos of the to boys I could gain a better look at the offspring. Besides...with his temper, if her mother was sleeping around, he would have killed her. Just like he wanted or tried to kill Sandy's black boyfriend. He would have went ape if he found out his wife was sleeping around.
@2sassyforya anything is possible, genetics is amazing, But this was the 50's & 60's how acurate could the paternity test have been back then. At this point...who cares. It is pretty horrible and disgusting how Sandy was treated and how extremely hateful people are in the world. This is just my opinion. I see ppl of mixed race all the time and you can see features from the parents. if you see Sandy's kids they look just like her.Sandy is a pretty girl and I just don't see any resemblance.
Either one of her parent's were passing as a white person or her mom had a affiar with a black man because there's no way in the hell two pasty ass white people can create a child with those african feature's.
I feel such compassion for Sandra who bore this pain alone. No understanding from anyone. Her father reminds me of people who have something to hide. I wonder if he knew more than he was telling. No matter though, what counts is that Sandra deserves some peace in her life and I hope she gets it.
A lot of so-called white people of South Africa have African racial heritage. Many of the oldest, most well known Boer familes are known to have non-white blood in their veins. White South Africans are on average 95% white and 5%black. That is why the "One Drop Rule" was never enforced in South Africa.
There was no DNA test done idiot. DNA testing was not available back then. They did a blood test and it was ruled that he could be her father, but no DNA. I believe he could be her father based on the fact that the younger brother does not look white either, yet he bears a resemblance to the father.
The father is the Black parent "passing" for white. The mother is white. She would not have had two children by an African man, back then. The father didn't accuse the mother of cheating, because the Black ancestors are on HIS side of the family. That's why he accepted BOTH children. Also it is easier for a man to "pass" for another ethnic group. People ignored the race of the brother, and I bet he continued to live as a White man. Mr. Laing was part Black.
baby Nmachi Ihegboro was born in UK last year to a black african couple, she is full white not albino, all tests were done on her and she is both their child, dna proved the father is the father but she is full white, blonde hair blue eyes whole nine yards white
black people can have white babies just as white people can have black babies. a black and white couple can have a full black baby or a full white baby. its all genetics and how genes can dominate or lay domant for generationas and then show up in another generation, simple straight science. look at this black couple that had a white full white not mixed not albino baby with blonde hair blue eyes.
@toriah22 I know people have a right to their own understanding, but adam and eve were two black people made the human race of all color. There is no way two white couple can make a dark skin child.
Why are you in such deep denial of the truth? What are you so scared of? Are you white and afraid that you have some hidden black blood and one day you might have a black child like the Laings? Its just common sense that the Laings have a black relative(s) and this explains Sandra's appearance. I don't understand why anyone finds this so hard to believe, I think you refuse to believe its possible because it calms your fears which convinces you it won't or can't happen to you
@manayesh If you look closely enough you can imagine she looks like anyone you want, like they do on the Maury Povich show. Whites have fucked niggers all over the globe. That makes lighter niggers. It doesn't make niggers pop out of pasty white people. He was out of town a lot and his wife was a liberal nigger loving whore. It's not at all uncommon. One must apply Occum's razor in this case. Denial ain't just a river in Egypt.
@MardukHail Since you use the "n" word so much, I wouldn't be surprise if you are that "n" you are describing. Besides the fact the "n" word defines 'whites only', not the other way around. So "n" marduk-hail are you trying to pass for white with black skin? Or are you the one that has a 'African American' girlfriend?

not really. if u luk at her thoroughly, she luks lyk her dad. afrikaners (dutch descendants) hav bn here in SA for 400 yrs nd they bn doin d black race coz they ddnt bring women whn they 1st came here. white women only came yrs after men were here.
thats y 20% of white ppl here hav a darkie blood in them.
Ha ha! That White man was in some serious denial! His whore wife was making babies with a nigger while he was minding his out of town store. What a punk!
Some of the comments about the mothers faithfulness, even if we put that aside, still does not condone the treatment of this poor woman when she was a child. I think it really is stupidity that suggests a separation of people, by race, as to whether they have worth or not.
@chsn09,U still think she was not tested well!Just look at all her siblings! They all came out mixed-race.If her mom wasn't faithful the first time, she wouldn't go on making mixed-race kids after she was born! Her mom was a faithful wife. All whites carryAfricanDNA.She was the only one who came out so dark that it sparked controversy. She isn't the only case though.Check google, there was a similar case in Texas(very conservative self acclaimed Southern Christian family)who never approved of blacks!
oh the movie made me cry..what she had to go through...and the way white people hate so much on black people..in her movie the teacher spank her more thing i was in tears..you know its just a way of life for white people all over the world..its what there taught in there homes it not right if your not white..i guess with all the laws now everythings at peace..
@furmanov18,Dude,U can't be sure of anything! This lady is darker than most mixed-race kids in S.Africa,na a standard of black Iguni lay(lightskin). Most Nilotic Africans have more pointed Doglike nose(like myself) than this lady yet she happens to be 100%White!! If U know the story of Black Russia I bet U will start worrying about ur own offsprings if U hate Africans(BLACKS).The family of this beautiful, kind hearted lady is a perfect example!
Both kids look biracial to me as they both have curly kinky hair and mixed ethnic features. Their birth to their parents just show you that no race is pure and really there was no such thing as race. Race was created to cause division amongst us humans as well as strife and it worked..smh
I can't believe anyone is simple enough to believe that the mother did not have sex with a black man. The documentary is comical when it says, "her mother worked in a store serving a black community while her 'father' worked in a store three kilometers away". The odds of this being a gene anomaly are virtually nill, the odds of an affair or rape are huge by comparison. The blood test they did back then, before DNA, was worthless (less than 50% accuracy) Race doesn't matter, but truth does.
@citizenjosefk, so the mother was raped twice by the same man producing 2 characteristically black children, I doubt it, they were a family that owned 2 businesses so they had a social standard and hierarchy I'm sure, and I'm also sure had the mom been raped it would have been discovered, and same goes for if she had been having an affair, someone would have said something, white women during the apartheid did not "stoop" to the level of the "inferior" black man by laying down with them.
@wansleyleah It's obvious the mother was having an affair with a black man (or men). This woman apparently worked alone every day in a black community. It's absurd to say the child is a rare genetic anomaly when there is a simple explanation. Cheating is a fairly common phenomenon, as are interracial affairs (even in the most prejudiced of times).
@GhettoPhenom314 No, maybe you didn't see my previous post, they did not have DNA testing back then. The kind of blood testing they did at that time was basically worthless as far as identifying who the parents of a child were (from my research those pre-DNA tests had less than 50% accuracy rates). DNA testing could easily prove what is the real truth in this case, yet the documentary makers and this family try to avoid the subject of DNA for some reason.....
@citizenjosefk I must agree. I felt the lack of DNA testing to be a compelling reason to doubt the legitimacy of her white parentage. Even if her Mom had an affair with an African man, the treatment Sandra endured is an unforgivable example of the polarization caused by South African apartheid and the damage it imposes on the human spirit.
@GhettoPhenom314 Yes, I missed that...since DNA testing did not exist at that time. Blood typing (which is the test they performed) and DNA testing (which was not available until the early '80's) are not related. And, bad parenting skills are not relavent to either.
@citizenjosefk In case you didn't watch carefully enough, there were dna tests that proved she was indeed the biological daughter of her parents."White" is a social class and prototypical distinction. period.
@coulorfully No, there weren't, don't make things up. In this case in the 1960s they did a blood typing paternity test or tests (not DNA) which are known today to be scientifically worthless for determining paternity. Even at the time, it was known that these tests were not reliable. If you think they did a DNA test please point to a specific time in the video where it says that. Try reading her wikipedia entry. DNA testing which would reveal the truth is conspicuously absent in this case.
@citizenjosefk In the book, there was a DNA test done to prove that her father was really her father. Even he really did not believe it. He never would allow her to be classified as coloured or black.
@citizenjosefk In the book, there was a DNA test done to prove that her father was really her father. Even he really did not believe it. He never would allow her to be classified as coloured or black. I believe that she was a throwback to ealrier African ancestors
The parents of this woman; both of them must have had distant ancestors of African descent. I believe they didn't have a true way of knowing it at the time. I feel so sad for this woman and how she was treated. Her life, her happiness, self-esteem, and education was compromised.
Apartheid was not good at all in South Africa, that is why even if the ANC is Rubbish and cannot rule, people will continue voting for them because everybody is free,
Poor woman I just can't begin to imagine what she endured being born to white parents in racist apartheid South Africa. She speaks with her head down, proves she was traumatized, it must have been so confusing to her as a child, when she was old enough to realize she was a blk child born to white parents. Racism is such a ugly thing All racist should see this video, perhaps they'll learn something about race.
I personally believe this couple were most likely paid science/eugenic projects. The could've signed a morbid medical contract to become willing subjects to a race mixing project.* Get paid big bucks* They didn't like race mixing..thats clear. Yet, when their kids came out "blk" they were kool..nah. A blood test would've been done long before Sandra was 9 i.e. (Someone must've known exactly why those babies were biracial looking) in order to be so calm about it.
Furthermore the father seemed to have a deep dislike for Sandra...and especially the thought of her becoming involved with a blk man. (Insecure or Conscious bother him?) It took another NINE years to have another baby, which came out looking just like Sandra..no one ever asked FTW is going here? Two times this happen..what did they think...White is the new black?
I have never actually seen a real story of white parents having a "black" child.
Why wasn't her brother kicked out?...Iv seen darked skinned white but thier hair...thier hair is just like mine...Iv never seen a white person or a jew with that exact same hair...only people mixed black or Arabs.

Ok., to make it short: Plenty of genes contribute to the colour of the skin. These genes do not follow clearly the Mendel rules and many of them have not yet been identified so far. You can read this everywhere, in scientific literature and in the internet. So what?

@topherh33 You my dear Imbecile are a PRIME example of an IGNORAMUS!!! You have NO IDEA of what you're talking about, and apparently KNOW NOTHING about genetics, so why expose and subject others to your ignorance? I have witnessed with my OWN eyes, and know 1st hand that this is not only possible, but also that IT DOES happen! I have seen on multiple occasions 2 dark skinned individuals produce not only what appears to be a Caucasian child,
kaijahzmom 3 months ago
@kaijahzmom actually YOU are the ignorant bafoon. I never said that two dark skinned ppl cant have a light skinned child. WHAT I DID SAY IS, two light skinned, light eyed ppl, cant have a dark skinned, dark eyed child, THAT is genetically improbable. The chances are about 100 billion to one.
They are two completely different things.
Maybe you should go back and educate yourself a little, before speaking.
topherh33 3 months ago
@topherh33 I'll tell you why, because you're a mentally inferior CRETIN, with absolutely NO BASIS, No comprehension of FACTS NOR Genetics! Your statistics are just a figment of your imagination and are WAY OFF BASE, and are worth just as much as your opinion, spewing out of your Anus of Brains!!!
kaijahzmom 3 months ago
@kaijahzmom LOL well my degree in biology, would say otherwise:) Try stating with looking up the differences between dominant and recessive genes, and i think you'll see what im talking about. Then try looking at allele variations in halogroups. This information can be found on many websites. And as far as expert opinions are concerned, I havent seen any experts who have been interviewed on this subject.
topherh33 3 months ago
@topherh33 MY POINT EXACTLY!!! :)
kaijahzmom 3 months ago
@topherh33 WHO are you, the Nutty Professor now? Duh, if it could happen in the case of ONE race, then it would be indicative of it happening in the other! OR did your narrow mind need a comprehension check? Who named you the "Authority" on the matter and why weren't you interviewed on your expert opinion?
kaijahzmom 3 months ago
@topherh33 actually it is quite probable ....as long as the lighter parents carry alleles for dark skin. in fact most people carry alleles for various skin complexions and it all depends on which two alleles the child receives. if exposed enough to different people you will see this quite often. while interning at a public school i've met quite a few latino children who are both dark skinned or light skinned with blue eyes and their parents are quite different.
amccleno 3 months ago
@amccleno LOL ok well since all light skinned people have ancestors who are dark skinned, which has been proven through genetic science, that means all light skinned people carry allels for dark skin, and can have dark skinned children. LOL this is your logic not mine.
Nice try but your logic, and science is very flawed.
Please refer to my previous posts.
topherh33 3 months ago
@topherh33 i don't understand what the confusion is. light skinned people can have ancestors who were both dark and light...depending on migration., lets keep in mind natural selection amongst genetics. all humans have a common ancestor who was of dark complexion. just because your alleles don't match your phenotype doesn't mean that they still don't exist.
amccleno 3 months ago
@amccleno Thats because you dont COMPLETELY understand how dominant and recessive genes work.
To put it simply, once a recessive gene becomes prominant you no longer carry the dominant gene, if you did then everyone would have dark hair and dark eyes. Dominant and recessive doesnt just refer to, all things being equal, one gene dominanting over the other.
topherh33 3 months ago
@topherh33 Let's look at a concrete example like the sickle cell or thalassemia trait in hemoglobin...both recessive. If you have one allele for it, your offspring can also receive that allele and so on. Plus you're missing the point, that skin complexion is not 100% dominant or recessive. Haven't you seen cases of many interracial families having offspring with complexions that vary significantly? Everyone doesn't have dark skin and dark eyes because of natural selection and interbreeding.
amccleno 3 months ago
@amccleno yes light skin is a recessive gene. There are many allels that cause different variations in color or complextion but most are dominant types.
topherh33 3 months ago
@topherh33 alrighty Topher. it's allelEs with an E and complexion without the T btw. but i guess grammar is like religion so whatever. anyway, i am just saying that i have seen a light person originate from dark parents (on more than one occasion), not that i saw Santa or something. ciao.
amccleno 3 months ago
@amccleno sorry my spelling and grammar are atrocious, but English isn't my first language, and this doesn't have spell check:)
topherh33 3 months ago
@amccleno " i don't understand what the confusion is. light skinned people can have ancestors who were both dark and light "
All light skinned people have ancestors who were originally dark skinned. Light skinned people evolved, through natual selection, to have light skin. because two light skinned people cant have a dark skinned child.
topherh33 3 months ago
@topherh33 Where is your proof? Have you seriously never seen a dark skinned child born to light skinned parents? And, in evolution, genetic mutations are carried through generations and light people are not strictly only procreating with other light people over generations and generations, so they carry genetic traits for dark skin as well.
amccleno 3 months ago
@amccleno Where is my proof? have you taken any college level biology classes? or for that matter any high school level classes? Do you understand how dominant and recessive genes work? and noo I have never seen a DARK skinned child born to LIGHT skinned parents. atleast not that wasnt proven false later on. Ive seen children, who have had a tan, and whos parents didnt, because their parents worked in an office and never went outside, but thats not what you are claiming.
topherh33 3 months ago
@topherh33 yes i have and am currently taking my final biology level course, i am sorry that you've never witnessed this occurrence. sorry, i did mix up the light and dark, i've seen it both ways: once in a Latino family and another time in an Italian family. both large families with multiple children varying in complexion.
amccleno 3 months ago
@kaijahzmom For two light skinned light, light eyed ppl to have a dark skinned, dark eyed baby, it would have to be due to a genetic mutation, not from genetic lineage. The chances of that to have happened are about 100 billion to one. and for that to have happened twice in one family? Well my calculator doesnt even have that many digits. Its a good thing her mother is dead cause its going to be incredibly embarrassing when the truth comes out, if it ever does.
topherh33 3 months ago
@topherh33 but a Caucasian child that has blonde hair and blue eyes. Genes skip generations. When two parents are carrying the "blue eyed" gene, the evidence of the genes will appear sometimes 3 and 4 generations down the line! THIS can and DOES occur in a child of ANY race

TheEdko1234 4 months ago

TheEdko1234 4 months ago
@1974Coconut These things happen. Get over it! You've learned nothing. Do some research. Her children's race does not solve anything. Just because you've never come across it doesn't mean it doesn't happen.

Blood typing ONLY proved her father could not be excluded from possibley being her father.
Mojave4ever 5 months ago

KeeKee3377 4 months ago
@KeeKee3377 No matter what prejudice you as an individual have against white people, or individual whites have against "fill in the blank", etc., an individual's "color preferences" will not change the "science". I can locate no evidence that a current DNA test was performed which is surprising. BTW, it is possible for 2 blck/wht mix parents to have a white or very light baby b/c the traits are recessive, but not vice-versa. Multiple genes are involved - so the latter nears impossible.

The fact "they" had two black offspring makes it even more obvious something else was likely occurring.

two caucasian people can never ever produce a child with that much melanin in their skin, its genetically impossible
libfinest100 5 months ago
@libfinest100 It isn't impossible for 2 white people to parent a characteristically "black" child. If the genes are in the family's background they can surface at anytime, and since there is no conformation that they were of "pure white decent" it is quite possible that there could have been black genes somewhere back in their family. The melanin pigment is just like the pigment that colors eyes, or hair, 2 blonde haired, blue eyed people whose parents are the same could have a brunette child.
wansleyleah 5 months ago
@libfinest100

I believe he could be her father based on the fact that the younger brother does not look white either, yet he bears a resemblance to the father.
hatelizwebber 7 months ago
The father is the Black parent "passing" for white. The mother is white. She would not have had two children by an African man, back then. The father didn't accuse the mother of cheating, because the Black ancestors are on HIS side of the family. That's why he accepted BOTH children. Also it is easier for a man to "pass" for another ethnic group. People ignored the race of the brother, and I bet he continued to live as a White man. Mr. Laing was part Black.

baby Nmachi Ihegboro was born in UK last year to a black african couple, she is full white not albino, all tests were done on her and she is both their child, dna proved the father is the father but she is full white, blonde hair blue eyes whole nine yards white
toriah22 8 months ago
black people can have white babies just as white people can have black babies. a black and white couple can have a full black baby or a full white baby. its all genetics and how genes can dominate or lay domant for generationas and then show up in another generation, simple straight science. look at this black couple that had a white full white not mixed not albino baby with blonde hair blue eyes.
toriah22 8 months ago

Some of the comments about the mothers faithfulness, even if we put that aside, still does not condone the treatment of this poor woman when she was a child. I think it really is stupidity that suggests a separation of people, by race, as to whether they have worth or not.
kerrielee1966 10 months ago

Beesahili 11 months ago
Both kids look biracial to me as they both have curly kinky hair and mixed ethnic features. Their birth to their parents just show you that no race is pure and really there was no such thing as race. Race was created to cause division amongst us humans as well as strife and it worked..smh

Askayah 11 months ago
I can't believe anyone is simple enough to believe that the mother did not have sex with a black man. The documentary is comical when it says, "her mother worked in a store serving a black community while her 'father' worked in a store three kilometers away". The odds of this being a gene anomaly are virtually nill, the odds of an affair or rape are huge by comparison. The blood test they did back then, before DNA, was worthless (less than 50% accuracy) Race doesn't matter, but truth does.
citizenjosefk 11 months ago
@citizenjosefk, so the mother was raped twice by the same man producing 2 characteristically black children, I doubt it, they were a family that owned 2 businesses so they had a social standard and hierarchy I'm sure, and I'm also sure had the mom been raped it would have been discovered, and same goes for if she had been having an affair, someone would have said something, white women during the apartheid did not "stoop" to the level of the "inferior" black man by laying down with them.
wansleyleah 5 months ago
@wansleyleah It's obvious the mother was having an affair with a black man (or men). This woman apparently worked alone every day in a black community. It's absurd to say the child is a rare genetic anomaly when there is a simple explanation. Cheating is a fairly common phenomenon, as are interracial affairs (even in the most prejudiced of times).
citizenjosefk 5 months ago
@citizenjosefk Did u miss the part where they did blood tests that proved she was their children? smh. DNA doesn't lie...
GhettoPhenom314 5 months ago
@GhettoPhenom314 No, maybe you didn't see my previous post, they did not have DNA testing back then. The kind of blood testing they did at that time was basically worthless as far as identifying who the parents of a child were (from my research those pre-DNA tests had less than 50% accuracy rates). DNA testing could easily prove what is the real truth in this case, yet the documentary makers and this family try to avoid the subject of DNA for some reason.....
citizenjosefk 5 months ago
@citizenjosefk I must agree. I felt the lack of DNA testing to be a compelling reason to doubt the legitimacy of her white parentage. Even if her Mom had an affair with an African man, the treatment Sandra endured is an unforgivable example of the polarization caused by South African apartheid and the damage it imposes on the human spirit.
CodyRiverW 5 months ago 2
@GhettoPhenom314 Yes, I missed that...since DNA testing did not exist at that time. Blood typing (which is the test they performed) and DNA testing (which was not available until the early '80's) are not related. And, bad parenting skills are not relavent to either.
Mojave4ever 4 months ago
@citizenjosefk In case you didn't watch carefully enough, there were dna tests that proved she was indeed the biological daughter of her parents."White" is a social class and prototypical distinction. period.
coulorfully 5 months ago
@coulorfully No, there weren't, don't make things up. In this case in the 1960s they did a blood typing paternity test or tests (not DNA) which are known today to be scientifically worthless for determining paternity. Even at the time, it was known that these tests were not reliable. If you think they did a DNA test please point to a specific time in the video where it says that. Try reading her wikipedia entry. DNA testing which would reveal the truth is conspicuously absent in this case.
citizenjosefk 5 months ago
@citizenjosefk In the book, there was a DNA test done to prove that her father was really her father. Even he really did not believe it. He never would allow her to be classified as coloured or black.

The parents of this woman; both of them must have had distant ancestors of African descent. I believe they didn't have a true way of knowing it at the time. I feel so sad for this woman and how she was treated. Her life, her happiness, self-esteem, and education was compromised.

Poor woman I just can't begin to imagine what she endured being born to white parents in racist apartheid South Africa. She speaks with her head down, proves she was traumatized, it must have been so confusing to her as a child, when she was old enough to realize she was a blk child born to white parents. Racism is such a ugly thing All racist should see this video, perhaps they'll learn something about race.
buttercup5773 1 year ago
I personally believe this couple were most likely paid science/eugenic projects. The could've signed a morbid medical contract to become willing subjects to a race mixing project.* Get paid big bucks* They didn't like race mixing..thats clear. Yet, when their kids came out "blk" they were kool..nah. A blood test would've been done long before Sandra was 9 i.e. (Someone must've known exactly why those babies were biracial looking) in order to be so calm about it.
Sahbisun 1 year ago
Furthermore the father seemed to have a deep dislike for Sandra...and especially the thought of her becoming involved with a blk man. (Insecure or Conscious bother him?) It took another NINE years to have another baby, which came out looking just like Sandra..no one ever asked FTW is going here? Two times this happen..what did they think...White is the new black?
Sahbisun 1 year ago
I have never actually seen a real story of white parents having a "black" child.
Why wasn't her brother kicked out?...Iv seen darked skinned white but thier hair...thier hair is just like mine...Iv never seen a white person or a jew with that exact same hair...only people mixed black or Arabs.
