I heard this on WFUV in NYC a few weeks ago and I had not heard it in decades. I never knew the name of the band or some of it's famous members. Thanks for posting!
I'd listen to this back in the day on WNEW-FM in NYC but I missed out on the original release when the record company went out of business. I was delighted a few years later (mid 70s) to find it re-released. It's been amongst my go to LPs when I need to feel really old!
@ZepposNonno Any full length airchecks of Wnew? i have one of Allison Steele i got from an Aircheck trader but like to get my hands on anymore that might be floating around out there.
I wanted to bring back Gilbert Street performed by Sweet Thursday, a real heavy UK rock group that we listened to in the late sixties on FM, the only the so called device we had. This is the real article music we has at the time.
All I had in my parents house for music when Gilbert Street came out was a black FM radio when FM Rock was starting to emerge. Scotzo, and the Night Bird, Allison Steele would entertain us for hours, we had nothing else electronic. Allison Steele had a voice that was hypnotizing late at night and she would play Sweet Thursday and of course the incomparable Billy Joel, Piano Man.We had Jimi and Pearl, a good world to be in.
You won't believe it, but this song got a ton of air play in the early '70s on KRC at Rockhurst College in Kansas City, Missouri. You had to live in one of the dorms to listen to KRC because it was only a cable radio station.
Great classic track. I heard it first also on WNEW-FM NY. 3 other great songs from this LP are "Molly," "Side of the Road," & "Dealer." The weakness in the album? I think Jon Mark's voice -- being a bit mellow -- needs his former partner Johnny Almond's support on sax. They worked with each other when they performed as Mark-Almond -- music a little more powerful & jazzy than Sweet Thursday. Check their LP "For the Heart." But this sole lp by Sweet Thursday is still great.
I've been trying to find a download of this for twelve years. And I've got this but can't figure out how to save it to my computer (other than on email) to get it into itunes
God bless whoever posted the links that let me find this - memories of this song have been torturing me for YEARS, but I haven't been able to recall the title, the artist, or anything except the line "get your ticket on the Northern line" (ok so I misremembered) and the final cadence -- but NOT the name of the street, or anything. I spent many happy hours listening to this on WNEW back in 1969 , mostly sent to me by the inimitable Zacherley. Now I can actually HEAR it again. Yay!
I taped this song back in 1970 from an "underground" FM station out of Pasadena, the call letters which I forget. A few years later my male cat decided to "mark" some of my tapes ( i guess he didn't like the music ) but I kept the tape anyway - I didn't know who did this song. After finding it here I went thru all my boxes of forgotten tapes and found it. It's all yellow and icky looking and plays muffled in spots but it's all good to me after all these years. Thank You.
other than this amazing piece, IMHO one of the best of the era, this album was drivel. But Gilbert St is terrific and timeless. Thanks for putting this up so effin' NICE!
Good song! I heard thissong by "radioio". Then,I think it sounds like John Lennon's "IMAGINE".
This song rereased in 1969.John 's IMAGINE in 1971... How do you think??

very Dylan Highway 61. That organ/piano thing. Lovely, melancholy stuff. Yes, WNEW back-in-the-day was superfine.

flooding on Gilbert street (Derby CT) reported in the news today reminded me of this song. I had long forgotten it.

The drum intro sounds just like Bowie's Five Years.
