I remember playing this piece in high school!! I wish I had the 1st flute part to this tune! Coming to think about it if anyone has it LET ME KNOW PLEASE!!
The youngest cowboy was Clay O'Brien who played Hardy Fimps later became Clay O'Brien Cooper, the 7 times World Champion Team Roper. He still competes. Saw him at the National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas on two occasions (he's qualified 23 times). Have seen him rope many times. Used to ride only Buckskin horses. Clay started roping at 5 years old at started competing in junior rodeo at 7. Today he runs a roping school and as a Christian speaker.
This movie was particularly chilling for a young lad of 13, which is when I first saw it. I'm "50+" but I can remember how Dern's great acting made my skin crawl! I also remember how I admired and envied those kids. I wanted to be out of the trail with them instead of stuck in boring High School in Australia!
As to the theme...Tell, where and when has John Williams ever written any BAD music? This is a great theme!!!
I hated Bruce Dern also seeing this movie as a young boy about some of those boys age in the movie. I am 42 now, but by did I want to be there when they where shooting all of those bad guys and when they all got Bruce Dern and let the horse drag him like it did. God Bless you JW miss you.
Is this the only Western score by John Williams? God bless him, he's so brilliant! I hope he gets an Honorary Oscar like Ennio Morricone and Dimitri Tiomkin. ^_^
I first saw the movie when I was 13 years old and have never forgotten John William's theme music. The theme has stayed with me till now & I'm always reminded of it when I'm in the Great American Countyside or see images of it.
Just watched it again on TV... at 3 in the morning. Oh my god, was I tired but it was so worth it. A very, very violent film, particularly astounding because children figure so prominently in it. The music is certainly one of John Williams best compositions.
It's a good film but I hate to see ole Duke Wayne gettin' shot by that slimy saddle tramp Bruce Dern....To this day Dern regrets his role in this movie because of the huge amount of abuse thrown at him from Wayne fans over the years. He says in his autobiography that scores of people from truck drivers to little old ladies cursed him for gunning down their hero..Wayne had the last laugh because while rehersing the fight scene Dern says Wayne beat the shit out of him leaving him bruised all over!
@butheadbros Much obliged Hombre...and who know's maybe some hot day in the future we'll 'make love' to a few bottles of tIcila and do a bit a roominatin' about cowboy stuff!!
In fact, I was wondering if it was the City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra directed by Nic Raine ? They recorded lots of great covers from Williams.

Is this the original soundtrack or a cover, please ?

Hi yannick, this is a recording which was made a few years ago but it's virtually identical to the original.

Thanks for your answers !

Well you are right about the orchestra but I can't find if the conductor was Nic Raine or Paul
Bateman!

Nic Raine, according to the inside box booklet, since we both obviously have the same great record. ;-)

This was my sister and I's favorite movie when we were kids. Could have watched it at least a 1,000 times.
Our Dad was a John Wayne and western movie addict.
