Four straight Stanley Cups, Five straight years in the finals, 19 straight series won. No team, any sport, any era ever accomplished this. footnote: Only three teams have ever won the cup three or more in a row. Toronto, Montreal and the NY Islanders. Fans of the Red Wings, Flyers, Penguins and especially Oilers hate being excluded but let's face it: There's "great" and there is "Greatest of the Greats". Toronto, Montreal and the Islanders are the only teams that honor this title.
1980- 405 point opposition for Isles.3 of top 4 teams 1981- 306 points 1982- 326 points 1983- 390 points 1st, 2nd place teasm Oilers: 1984- 347 points 1985- 366 points 1987- 336 points 1988 - 369 points Ultrapower , wake up and smell the coffee. These numbers show the Islanders toughest year were far far harder than the Oilers harder years. The Oilers had jocular opposition for the first 3 rounds (except Calgary) , so its easy to look good and be healthy. .
It seems that youre obsessed with me. Listen bitch, I have a girlfriend. I dont need or want a boyfriend. Im not interested in your bullshit either. Theres a zoo in New York Im sure why not go play with the niggers and monkeys at that place. Its a good remedy for you if youre not taking your regular dosage of psyllium.
you keep getting your comments removed homo. is there something you dont understand about heterosexuality? straight men dont love men, they love women you dork! now fuck off already!
Youre American. I pitty you. I cant imagine what its like to have half the world hate you. I dont even want to know your problems. Or your sexuality. Or your life. Or your stupid New York, Long Island or whatever accent. Or anything else about you bitch. All I know is that youre worthless, so keep sailing in search of your homo lover!
Your lack of self esteem is really quite alarming, & I think have an idea that might be of some help to you. A little further east here on Long Island there's an old duck farm that's being converted into a Fat Farm. Word is that the owners have a growing list of international clients - so you should be quite comfortable there. Let's face it, you're more than a little "chubby", & this certainly couldn't be anything but a positive experience for you. let me know if you need more info. : )
This is how it works you Islander fans: this is the most simple piece of explanation youll ever hear. But since youre all dumb, you probably wont get it. But let me try to make you punks understand this. Great teams almost always beat the weak teams. Proven fact over a zillion times. When two great teams go head to head, its not a given who will win. So, had the Islanders played TOUGHER opposition in the 81 and 82 playoffs and BEATEN them, the Isles would be more respected as a dynasty. Get it?
sail027li: youre very funny. And that explains why youre an Islanders fan who will have to wait until the 5th of never to see them win a Cup again. You got plenty to cheer about, let me tell you. John Tavares LOL. Yeah plenty to cheer about.
sail027li: yeah Im the same man as HisMajestyBobbyOrr, what gave you your first clue asshole? Totally meaningless stat you keep throwing out, the 76 and 77 Islanders are the only team to beat the Canadiens in the playoffs LOL. So? Whats your point? Oh let me guess you dont have one LOL. Is that why youre in search of your feminity and go sailing around to find your bitch? It seems like it. It doesnt even fucking matter if the Islanders won a total of 3 gms vs. Habs in those 76 and 77 playoffs.
I throw out '77 because in your "analysis" lol( on another vid) that the Islanders 1977 team was the same on paper as the 80's teams were, which is TOTALLY ABSURD!!
The Islanders dynasty should be celebrated not for its "greatness" but for its luck. Yes, luck. Great teams make their own luck. In the Islanders case, it was them NOT facing the top teams in both the 81 and 82 playoffs. Only a fucking retard will deny this. And dont start with garbage like "the islander beat teams that beat good teams". That sounds pretty stupid when you REALLY think about it. Fact: 3 out of 4 Islanders opponents in 81 playoffs were below the .500 mark in reg season. LUCKY.
sail027li: if you ever get the time to do it, do this (since you havent already done it). Read the stats properly and will see that about half of the Islander playoff opponents from 1980 to 1983 were garbage. If you still dont believe me, get in contact with some of my friends in Toronto. People who write books for a living, people who do the stats books, they can show you how to read the stats PROPERLY since youre a dumbfuck asshole from the USA.
The best of 5 series against the Penguins in 1982 was by far the toughest series they had during that entire run. otherwise, things were pretty even over the course of those 4 years.
Well the Finals against Philly in 80 were tough too (The key was that they won Game 1 in Philly in OT. The other games in Philly were blowout losses while the games in Long Island were blowout wins. Had they palyed a Game 7 in Philly I'm not sure they would've won. Even Bossy said that.), but I do agree with you. They pulled the final game of that Pens series out of a hat.
I'm not an Isles fan but one thing they had going against them in 84 was injuries. Bourne missed almost the entire playoffs. Tonelli missed time. They were banged up & they were getting older although out of Potvin, Bossy, Tonelli, Trottier, Smith, Gillies, Morrow, LaFontaine & Flatley, only two of those guys were over thirty, Smith and Potvin. They simply faced a better, younger & more dynamic team. Without Flatley & LaFontaine coming in after the Olympics they don't even get that far.
I did not count that one because they did not win the cup that year, but that would come in at number 2. That was the greatest hockey game I've ever seen. I was 12 at the time & a Rangers fan. It broke my heart. I was crying. That was one of the few games, & series for that matter, where you can say that it's a shame there had to be a loser. The Rangers won Games two & three 3-0 & 7-2 respectively, & were leading 1-0 after 2 in Game 4. The Isles had more resolve than just about any team.
I thought their toughest run overall was 1980 where they had to beat 3 tough and higher seeded teams in Boston, Buffalo and Philly.
1981 was a cakewalk (only Edmonton gave them some work)
1982 was a cakewalk after their near death experience vs Pittsburgh in opening round
1983 was 2nd toughest run
In 1984, they would have had a chance but smitty stopped making the miraculous saves when the series switched to Edmonton in games 3, 4 and 5, and their defence had slowed.
The drive for five was realistic, but the Oilers learned what it took to win by being swept the previous year. The toughest and most impressive run for the Isles bar none was sweeping the Oilers in 83. Before that, they were a great team. After that they were one of the greatest teams ever. The Oilers were stacked and mathematically should have beat the Isles. But the Isles gave it 500%. Al Arbour said after that series that there is no greater character team in sports than his Isles.
I just watched a vid of game 1 and Isles were lucky win that one, Oilers dominated 3rd period, Anderson missed an open net and a short time later a shot beat smitty but bounced off the post. I want to see the other games too, but I can't find the vids anywhere.
Smith was awesome in that series and the truth is that luck is part of the game. The Oilers shot advantage in that game did not indicate the eveness of the game. Either team could've won. The next three games were 6-3, 5-1 and 4-2. Islanders simply outclassed them.
The Islanders were as complete and as solid a team as you could have. They had speedy offense in Bossy, Trots, etc., but also a wall defense in Potvin, Morrow, and they had grinders. Nobody worked harder than Tonelli, and they all played as a team, no big egos. Yeah, they schooled the Oilers in 83, for sure. But their students returned the next year to show them what they had learned.
I think it's mostly the younger fans who question the Islanders greatness because they weren't around to realize how good they were.
Before this 83 Finals, I thought the Oilers would win for sure. Then in Game 1, the Isles beat them in Edmonton 2-0. Yet I STILL thought the Oilers would win.
Then the Isles completely outclassed them again in Game 2 and beat them 6-3.
Right there I finally realized how good the Isles really were. Completely shutting down the highest scoring offence in NHL history.
Hey Raggie fans!

If there was ever any doubt of how great the Isles were, they proved it many times over in 83 by sweeping the powerhouse Oilers.

- Did you think the 4th title was going to be the last one? Or was the drive for five realistic?
- What year was the toughest run for the Islanders in 80-83?
Thanks

That 2nd goal by Tonelli is a beauty. He really hustles to beat the Oiler defenders and then gets the perfect pass on his tape.
Anyone who doubts the greatness of the Islanders should check out the complete series against the Oilers. They decimated them .
