  • It would have been better if she died.

  • Nice that many films like this survive due to those paper prints made for copyright purposes.

  • Me too

  • Also, this print seems to be in much much better shape than the copy I have of this one.

  • I do like watching silent films, but mostly just for their historical value, minus masterpieces such as The General and City Lights. I think it's easy for people to convince themselves that they enjoyed these movies as it makes them feel cultured, and so that when people say 'I liked Avatar', they can say 'I watched Birth of a Nation in black and white, with no sound, on dodgy grainy film and enjoyed it more than Avatar', and make themselves feel special and unique.

  • @littlepro22 Or...they could just like the movies alot. There are a lot of silent films I would rather watch than modern movies. But that's just me. I personally adore silent movies not just for their historical value but there entertainment value. It has nothing to do with being "cultured" or "special".

  • wow its so fascinating 2 watch dw 1st ever shorts n i tell ya from this short,,,there is ardy a potential signal that dw will b king n father of hollywood which he did 7 years later haha xD

  • What a nice little piece of filmmaking from the greatest filmmaker of the silent era. Forget silent era, I would put Birth of a Nation down as one of the best movies EVER!!! I believe this may have been D.W.'s first film, I'm not sure so don't quote me on it.

  • what song is this?

  • @RAZALAS92e Symphony no. 40 by Mozart.

  • I'm not sure why but I really like this film.

  • History doesn't relate what they did to the gypsy when they caught up with him. Tarred and feathered him probably before lynching him and his wife. Perhaps there's a sequel?

  • @gnomely1 I am so pleased I am not alone, I have been watching silent movies since I was10, I am now 54, and loving them just as much, when I first started to watch them, it was rare to get to see them, we are so lucky with YT and DVDs now, that access is so much easier and choice abundtant

  • @SilentDays100

Thanks for your response. The wonderful aspect of all these silent films is that we are able to see the actions and movements of actual people around a century ago as they acted out a play. It's pure history. The acting techniques will be those of the 19th century and may not have changed for a couple of hundred years or so. Melodrama at its finest. They may be long dead but their acting is preserved for us to enjoy. Best wishes.

  • those early films are quite moving. i suggest you, as an italian, nuovo cinema paradiso. a marvellous movie. everybody should see it

  • lol

  • Griffith is good, but I prefer Melies

  • This movie of the Biograph company contributes style to the cinema.

In 1908 the cinema began to walk.

  • I love Griffith's material. I plan on eventually buying the two D.W. Griffith boxed sets.

  • i have a love for the silent film era unlike todays generation who would discard these classics and laugh at them i love them and keep them coming

  • i am your soul mate facasj

  • why does it sound like there is a carnival in the background?

  • Did the noise of the audience come with this film? It's kinda hard to concentrate on the camera angles and acting.

  • Very good - Griffith was a master even with his first film...

  • what's with the background noise of people chattering? It's very noticable at:44 and then again later on.

    Mary-

  • awesome!!

  • Is this Griffith's first direct?

  • Yes
