Now we can see that she was right. I wouldn't have the Labour party run a piss up in a brewery. They are not fit to hold high office - they need to be consigned to the dustbin of history. They should never be allowed to govern again. Capitalism is how we're going to repair the damage but the present system needs to be reformed - there needs to be a tax on all Chinese imports and Thatcher would never have allowed Outsourcing abroad while Labour did nothing.

wow she sounded radically different on europe in 89 than 91. She changed from it being ok in europe but hating its make-up to wanting out altogether, I wonder what changed her mind?

@BiffaTW Thanks, I cannot work out how to PM, so I'll put it here briefly. For most of the 1970s and 80s, the Conservatives were the pro-EU party (which makes sense; trade with the EU is good for business). Thatcher was a tough negotiator but was pro membership (Michael Foot wanted to withdraw). From the late 80s, the EU wanted to get involved in more spheres of policy, Thatcher was against this as she was against the single currency (her predictions seem to be coming true now).

@luckhurstrobert Thanks ^^ Yeah I agree but even at this point (89) she was still arguing FOR membership, and then suddenly changed in 1991 to all-out withdrawal she fell because of it. Maybe its simply because she saw withdrawal as the only option to escape its influence? Or maybe more sinisterly she foresaw then the consensus that would only be revealed later in the top 2/3 parties (lib dems later) and she threw her premiership away to defend and even reveal it -perhaps.

@BiffaTW The way I see it, the EU (which was the EEC - European ECONOMIC Community) was at that point still about free trade-so good for businesses, the economy and freedom in general. It then evolved into harmonizing social policy and creating an ill conceived currency block.Thatcher's change of mind could reflect this shift in reality. She was talking up membership to inspire Tories to vote in the EU elections. I dind't know she was advocating withdrawal in 1991. Do you have a source for this?

@luckhurstrobert Well basically her final days and speeches were mainly about the march towards a federal Europe (e.g the 'no no' speech). I dont know if she actually said it but if she believed what she said then how could she advocate anything else? If she saw it for what it really was then how could she want to be apart of it? It seems to me the key turning point was the idea of an actual federal europe she'd compromsied on some things but that was too far.

Funny, considering the fact that Churchill was on of the first who spoke of a United states of europe, but in a positive not negative sense.
