Sounds like she was just trying to scream the words out...she has no tone quality. She messed on a couple words, but I'll give her the BOD for nerves. She gets the chorus well though...but most of her singing is kind of messy.
I can see why she won at Otakon this year. She really has a powerful voice, imagine her hitting high notes. She's awesome !!!
And ignore the haters; does it matter by race to sing a song ? I'm black, and Latrice and Ai Chan inspired me to enter the otaku idol next year.
All I need is a suggestion what song a guy would sing in the contest ^__^;; b/c I watched some vids and the contestants are mostly girls, but that's not problem. ^__^
I think she should've had more variation in singing style -- i don't think this song was made to be belted out all the way through. A little more headset would've been nice. She was a little flat on some of the held-out notes. Some parts sounded like her voice was being strained yet other parts sounded quite good. It could've sounded richer in my opinion but nontheless, good job. At least she sang it with soul & feelin'. Maybe more coaching and practice would help. Not totally bad.
Eh, i listened to it again. I take it back, her tone *is* rich. Just, some notes were off and I'm not used to hearing this song sung in head-voice/belted (lmao, am i even using right terms?). I'm not even going to touch the pronunciation part because i feel it's irrelevant.
Oh gosh. ummm. it's kind of hard to explain without, uh, actually letting you hear some kind of audio clip. X'D I suppose ... if a guy sings in his falsetto voice, then you could view headset as the female version. Although that's technically wrong but i don't know how else to explain it. TuT;;
Yep. When using your head voice your vocal cords are still a little open, while when using your falsetto your vocal cords are basically closed and you're making light airy sounds. Head voice > Falsetto.
She's probably gonna berate me for even posting this but shoganai ne. (Yup I used random Japanese but I used it correctly ^_^)
She's a great singer. She sounds good here but great in person. It's sad to see people who don't know anything about her putting her down. Particulary for her singing and Japanese ability, which are both well above average.
This makes me miss Karaoke with you Latrice. We gotta find somewhere her to do it right.
To animejpop: when will you put up the Otakon vid?
Yokotempie: You're right -- It's sad to see so much destructive critism and hate. Honestly, I thought her level of karaoke was very high for this particular competition -- High enough to be better than those who rated 1st and 2nd, anyway (I won't say 3rd, since I came in 3rd LOL).
Thank you for the reminder -- Keep pushing me. I aim to have them up within the week. It's sad that my card ran out of space before during her last song -- She rocked it, better than at Katsu.
... jeez, by the way people were commenting, i thought it would be really bad.. but it's fine. you guys are way too critical. i even almost enjoyed it a little. lol
@YurPants I`m neutral! So you deserve a hit that`ll stick into you`re mind too! X) It`s only fair? Sorry if this insult is late. Look who can`t spell? It`s just a karaoke contest right? Can you sing??? To be honest it was strange how she pronounced some words but maybe she freaked/she just can`t grasp the accent correctly/or maybe that`s her style of singing? But she won for a reason.
Your problem is the power of ur voice, its too strong its a soft song. And you sound like an american. Its a JAPANESE song. You sound like an american trying to imitate a Japanese.
so sue her for implementing her own style into the song. The goal was not to emulate Utada if it was she'd fail because no one can sing like Utada and it'd be a boring interpretation if she tried. Singing her way I say she did a pretty good job. Was she as good as Utada, no, but that's not to say she didn't do a good job within her own right.
She would do good with something from the Seatbelts w/ mai yamane

I wonder if she realizes that this is yelling and not singing...
LenntBear 1 year ago
There were some good and bad things about this performance.
First the bad: Not much dynamic contrast. She shows all her cards in the beginning of the song. She also sacrificed pitch for power at some parts.
Good: Awesome vocal chords. Very nice range in the chest register. If only she controls it better, this performance would have been almost perfect.

....no. totally ruins the feeling of the song. MAYBE it would've been good if she wouldn't have screamed at me the whole time...

There are plenty of songs for guys to do!
And besides, there's no rule saying you can't cross-sing! (er, a term I invented... singing a song originally sung in the opposite gender)

I love this. What a neat, fun rendition. What a powerful voice! :)

Head voice is the upper register in everyone's voice. It's not relative to just women; men have head voices too.
Falsetto and the head voice are two different things, by the way.

!! ah-ha~ thank you. XD yeah, falsetto and head voice are two different things -- i'm just phail at explaining these things.

She puts her own twist on the song. But I think her pernunciation is kinda off in some words.

Hikaru Utada is the English word order.
Utada Hikaru is the Japanese word order.
