  • I'm not giving you a free car. WTF? GIVE ME A FREE CAR!!!

  • thanks

  • Drive a 997 Turbo with PDK....You quickly forget about Manual :P

  • Only problem with PDK is possible future problems down the road. But with the proper paddles now available.. could be fun, quicker gear changes and shorter ratios too :D Just hope you can afford the repairs later on.

  • or get a good warranty

  • @MagicLewisForever lol why not just get a manual? its a porsche, not a grannymobile

  • @bobrec3GTI Manual is slower.. paddles as fitted to the new gen cars is very nice on the track (think F1) up on the right down on the left.

No heavy clutch in traffic too and is great fun to drive... Having said that I just bought a 1st Gen 997 Carrera S with manual gearbox and I love it!!

  • I wonder if anyone could answer this for me: Does the PDK auto-shift for you when you hit red-line or are about to stall the engine?

  • It won't let you red-line at all. In fact it won't let you get near unless you have the Sport Chrono package and select Sport Plus.

  • auto shift

  • lol WTF?? Why is it so fucking secret the launch control?

  • a launch control ...launch is very very very hard on the gear box. And Porsche don't want most of their car get returned in few week with transmission failure. On the track that's fine to do because you only launch it once at the start line. But on the road it will be tempting for the new 911 owners not to light the tires up at every set of red lights he see's

  • PDK ist fur sissies. its for a-hole lawyers in beverly hills that do everything while driving and only buy a porsche to make them look good. Same for any other DCT/DSG/PDK/F1/whatever cars.

Thats the way I see it.

  • Have you even driven this car, if you go to the track alot, pdk is superior, or sit in alot of traffic, pdk keeps the car usable and the driver sane. I personally am going with a manual, but pdk yields a faster car with better fuel economy in this case, though I personally like the feel of cutting through gears and don't sit in too much traffic. ps I have driven an 09 S w/ PDK and it was amazing, drive it first kid, if they let you...

  • So I guess the pros that drive with dual clutch transmission in professional racing series are a-hole lawyers in beverly hills ,eh? Dumbfuck

  • its crazy, not only do i blow away 996 TURBO's on the road (in a non turbo 997 PDK) but i also get 35+ MPG on the highway if i average above 70mph.

  • go drive the car, i used to be manual 6speed guy, my first 997 was 6 speed.. i hated anything auto.. drove the pdk twice and ended up buying one that i still have now and love..

  • @rijowysock same here man, i used to only want manuals, then i test drove two golf gti's, one with a dsg and one with a manual... needless to say, my next car will be a gti dsg.

  • hubava mashina!!!

  • wasn't this guy on 'head to head' against a gtr?

  • I've never driven a manual and with that said, I'd take the PDK over the manual given the choice. IMO, it'd be more fun on the road and track. Millisecond shifts would let me concentrate on timing the turns and shifts, and maximizing speed while keeping my hands on the steering wheel at all times. Though, the shifters might take some getting used to.

  • i disagree, the pdk would make it feel artificial and impure. plus, porsche makes one of the best manuals on the planet, why trade that for buttons from a child's gameboy?

  • btw for the fastest acceleration you should set the PDK in 'Sport' and not in 'Drive'..

  • No way would i buy a 911 auto that's just crazy! just go and buy a bmw M3 or audi S5to drive around , no matter how fast your going you just don't feel connected like...... " sex with a condom"

  • thats so fucken tru...i hate all these new tiptronic or wateva...pliz keep producing manual

  • Well maybe they should make those tiptronic buttons vibrate or something...

    ROFL...

  • The PDK is not an "auto", the "tiptronic" is....

  • why was that guy worried about losing his job? go to the porsche website and there's a demonstration saying the exact same thing he did with the launch control.

secondly, why do the companies keep trying to kill off the manual? i read the top gear review of the pdk, and they said that it's completely useless/unsporty in auto mode, so you have to use the paddles at all times. if this is the case, then what is the point? you might as well get a proper manual!

  • the gt3 face lift just came out and its a manual. i think the gt3,gt2,gt3rs will always come with a manual transmission.

  • imagine how fast the turbo's gonna be

  • 07:05 whats with the tail sticking out of his ass

  • key chain

  • EMIL IS A LIAR!!!! :-(

BTW, why is there a Panzerkampfwagen #4 on top of the table at the beginning?

  • test drive the 911 PDK last week. Good but no fun

  • But it's the way of the new world.

  • I don't know, I've test driven the Carrera 2S multiple times now with the PDK and it's put a smile on my face each time.

  • Great moment caught on camera. =D Thank God for youtube in which we can upload all of our crazy videos like this. haha

  • "es verboten" is not german!! Actually it has to be "es ist verboten"

  • who cares

  • DSG or PDK they are the best.

  • I like them and this made me feel really happy. I want to make some of these little lovlies and think of Julie and what's her name. This project fills me with love and holiday joy. i will support the home made things! I LIKE THEM

  • I'm currently saving up to get a 911s or 4s.

    NO STUPID PDK!

nothing less than a MANUAL gearbox.

and yes porsche designers a TOO LAZY.

  • the new cayman s is the best porsche ever made really personal choice

  • Imagine how the Turbo will be when they get that PDK in that, or even better the GT2!

  • That's what I've been thinking.

  • Porsche has the laziest designers in the world!!!

  • agreed!

  • Not used to change a perfect shape !

  • This is extremely nice review. My congrats.

  • COOL

  • Emil, your name sounds bulgarian, are you a BG ?

  • The dual clutch tranny allows the driver in city to drive with more convenience possible. OK, on the paper it looks better on every ways: accelleration, fuel consumption. But I still sticking on manual transmittion because the manual offer more spiritual driving, not a computerized fast-moving object. The serious driver will only want manual tranny to take control of the car as much as possible.

  • the new steering wheel looks retarded

  • cool!

  • I would never own an automatic/PDK Porsche 911. Have owned 4 911s, all of them manual.

  • i saw this on top gear this morning. nice car.

  • Matt, I'm assuming Porsche gave you those animations...or did someone on your staff do them?

  • All I wanna know is if drifting is possible with PDK and CVT setups.

  • With PDK you can drift, but with CVT I don't think so..

  • Hahahaha jesus christ!

It took porsche 8 years to catch up with the rest of the car manufacturers with stratified fuel injection and differential transmissions?

Wowee look at this fancy A4 I got 7 years ago it has all the fancy futuretech of this porsche... but it is heavy and less powerful than a 911 =/

  • Porsche developed dual clutch transmissions more than 25 years ago. Also Lancia developed twin-charged engines back in the 80's. The name "TDI" was firstly used by Fiat in the early 90's. VW-Audi only bought other peoples' inventions. Now they're pride of their DSGs TSIs FSIs TDIs...

  • *they're proud of

  • @trobi what you miss is that VW/Audi was able to take these expensive niche technologies and commercialize them in mass production. that's not an easy feat.

  • porsche is on the top of tecnolgy and they test a lot every part before put it into the car, porsche has developped pdk more than 25 years and they are one of the first in use sequential gearbox in racing.

  • mexico

  • This video makes me want to get a driver's license.

  • that is a sick ass color

  • I hate dual clutch transmissions.

  • Agreed, they're a pain in the ass.

    ULTIMATUM

  • hey, can you explain what a dual clutch is?

  • it's just their name for the now prevalent differential transmissions, first introduced by audi as the quattro system. which they trademarked, so now every other manufacturer has to make their own trademarked name and we can't just call them something simple that makes sense... like differential transmission.

it allows a smooth transition between gear ratios, instead of fixed gear ratios 1 through 5/6 it has a very wide range of gear ratios and seamlessly transitions between them.

  • really good explanation

    thanks :)

  • Too much talk bro ... you need too show more the car , and not that shit guy.

  • "Es Verboten" WTF means that xD Isn't a german senteces at all.

  • they are gunna shoot themselves in the foot with this one. I would go out of the way to get a manual gearbox. Shoot, I can't imagine a Porsche with this crap PDK junk. If they want sales, they can't do this, a manual gearbox at least needs to be an option.

  • There is a difference between expectations and reality. Like they said in the video, BMW thought their SMG in the e46 M3 would be the end of manual gear boxes. The only option to order an M5 or M6 when they debuted was with an SMG, but they changed it later on because of demand. Consumers are the ones that dictate what goes in a car, not the company. And if the company decides what it wants in a car, well then, look at what's happening to American car companies.

  • The manual gear box is standard. PDK is ia optional.

  • i saw that GT3 in Zacatecas México last year

  • "The first transmission handles gears 1,3,5, and the other does 4,5,6"

wtf? Surely they could've fixed that.

KEEP STICKSHIFTS!!! Don't get rid of manuals. There's nothing like it.

  • ...to much technology in the car...why not just let it drive itself?? its more of a computer than a car...its to easy...i wouldn't even take one if it was handed to me.

  • Buy Lotus! w00!!

Lotus and Ariel rock for EXACTLY this reason!

  • i dont like it a lot. theres nothing like a manual. the sound, the feel. this just seems like another automatic or a video game.

    RIP manual cars =[

  • Nice Panzer III!

  • Are you stupit moster

  • I think he said it was Porsche forum members. But nice try for the anti-American shot.

Ihre Mutter geht hurend in Stuttgart.

  • can't believe it...

american viewers have the chance to ask specific questions to a 911 tester - what do they want to know?

"how does the ipod integration work?"

    no comment

  • Yeah, I agree with you. I was very surprised about that. My questions would have been, new engine? PDK tranny? & the 3rd would have been probably about the launch control or something alike.

  • what the hell! we want the manual!!! jesus, taking the fun out of driving

  • Agree. Also, I can't see how you can do a clutch kick drift with those PDK transmissions. Driving is more than just lap times, isn't it?

  • Why don't you buy yourself a 240sx and weld the differential if you want to drift.

  • well a lsd only cost $150 and its alot better than a welded diff that may vibrate itself to death

  • That's a matter of opinion. But I was being half sarcastic when I said that.

  • i was too XD

  • not impressed would prefer a manual

  • Stupid purists. Did you cry this much when transmissions started using synchronizers because you liked double clutching so much? Didn't think so. PDK is an evolution that is no different than direct fuel injection. And congrats to Emil, you did a great job on this piece. Did Matt, or 419 put you on it because you're already own 2 911's? Either way, great job.

  • in all honesty, i put Emil on it because I was out of town on the Audi Mileage Marathon when this event took place and I couldn't be in 2 places at once. Emil killed it though....

  • It's 2:35am in New York and you're answering questions on YouTube? Now I'm wondering if you are really dedicated or just bored. Thanks for the response!

  • try drunk commenting.... and dedicated.

  • Haha, +1

  • screw that ...SCREW THAT! You can't take away manual!

If you do..I'll ride motorbikes from now on!

  • ill die the day they kill off the manual for good, makes driving all that more fun.

  • It took him that long to get to 140? I could do that in half the time in my stang.

  • sorry just NOT IMPRESSED

  • Your good on camera Emil, you should do that more often.

  • Very nice.

  • I dont like porsches but vid 5/5! ;)

  • I could do the same thinig on my Audi TT Quattro, BFD

  • I will never give up the manual trans eve if the new systems are faster. I just want to have full control and like to have the feeling of rowing the gears and slipping the clutch etc.

  • the next porsche i'm buying it's definitely going to be a PDK

  • PDK is glorified automatic. What about using your clutch in conjunction with your brakes and transitioning to power through corners for exmple. Porsche hear me, if you only offer PDK I won't buy your cars. Come to Vermont where fast is limits of traction all summer long with a manual. PS: These guys in the video are slow. Like old ladys in minivans.hehehe...

  • An automatic has a torque converter, a manual has a clutch. The PDK transmission has a clutch, therefore it's a manual.

  • Actually, to be technical, it has two clutches. :^D

  • two clutches indeed

  • 2 clutches clearly aren't enough. I want 7, 1 for each gear. Better yet, I want 14 so when I start breaking clutches I can keep on driving.

  • you are aware that automatics also have clutches...but are automatically engaged...hence they're called automatics.

  • completely untrue.... automatic transmissions have torque converters, manual transmissions have clutches.

  • Automatic transmissions also contain clutch mechanisms but they are automatically engaged, same as PDK. The golden measure is whether or not is has a clutch pedal on the floor next to the brake pedal to be a true manual transmission. Any true driver knows you can do as much with the clutch pedal as the accelerator or the brake. What car companies are trying to do is make a one size fits all because it cheaper to make one transmission style rather than two. True drivers know better.

  • No, as Ferrari F1 transmissions and Lambo's E.Gear transmissions are manuals, yet have electronically controlled clutches. They are NOT automatics. The PDK, like Audi's DSG is also a manual because it connects the engine to the transmission via clutches. The Audi Tiptronic system is an automatic because it uses a torque converter. The third pedal is not the defining characteristic of a manual transmission, the clutch disc is.

  • so true.. its not about the third pedal, its the clutch disk.

  • @RonnieMX: no, auto transmisssions don't have a clutch. They have a torque converter, which is two turbine blades (one connected to the engine, the other the gears) separated by a few 100ths of an inch in a space filled with oil. Cheers.

  • @RonnieMX Pwned

  • cool video man!!

  • "dude the bars in salt lake city suck" lol

  • Launch control omgz, don't tell n e bodi!!

  • lol... suck it Nissan.

  • wow... that was a brilliant review,

    thanks matt.

  • launch control that wont void your warranty... brilliant!

  • HAHAHA, LOL

"Well since the camera is off I'll show you, my jobs in jeopardy so all you do is..."

  • I would porsche would sell more automatics in the US considering that just about 6% of new car sales are manual.

  • HA. They made a GTR Joke. - for those who didn't catch that bit about the launch control.

  • Isn't that the same launch control process as the older 997 models?

  • 1st off, you shouldn't have showed the launch control, but why would porsche want to keep it a sectret?

  • it's a joke.... don't believe everything you see

  • I drove a 911 S with PDK at the annual Porsche Drive event in my city, just this Sunday. It's really nice, but saying whether or not it is better than last years Tiptronic is just nitpicking. Either way your 911 is better than 95% of the cars you'll drive by.

  • Yeah? Did you really not see that much of a difference in performance/ shifting? I have a CS with TipS and was thinking about the new Cayman with PDK, so your input would be appreciated.

  • I understand wanting to give the fans of this show a little something extra but that was just wrong having that guy show launch control and taping him when he said not to. He shows off the car to you guys and you do that to him? Talk about having no respect.

  • I could be wrong here, but I think that he knew the camera was on.

  • You guys are freaking dense. All the Porsche guys were in on the launch control thing. The host even set up the joke!

  • What a dick, that guy probably lost his job because he showed the launch control.

  • you guys at New next networks are determined to piss off das Germans.

  • the one thing the forgot to mention about launch control....before you use it....u gotta write one hell of a check!!!! lol

  • idk i still love my manual and i think that a manual is the most fun, even if it isnt the fastest anymore. manufacturers should still offer a manual option even with these new dual clutch gearboxes.

  • Im german and I dont understand the german at the end, and Im not so stupid, I think there was ein Fehler.

  • Good show today. I wish you guys would go through each car segment, and make comparisons and rank most desirable for each segment. Maybe even give out awards like sport, all around great value and most practical car. I love sport cars and would love to own one. But my car budget is mustang GT level, and I think most of America budget is south of 30k car. Maybe you could do another ranking for used cars in the 15-25k range. Or show how you buy old and cheap, and rebuild it into awesome.

  • Oooh right its not just the trannny.

Its the engine also. Direct fuel injection.

  • And LED Lights.

Plz Porsche come up with your own ideas.

  • True, so did Nissan with the GTR but Porsche is part of the VAG (Volkswagen Audi Group) so it's not stealing when it's your cousin kinda thing.

Porsche will have 51% of the VW's stock by 2010.

  • Yea thats a shame. Say good bye to R8 and any other cars that compete with Porsche models.

  • From what I have read, the VW DSG tranny is different from Porsche's version. I don't really know the difference.

The DSG type tranny (found in BMW's, VW's, Bughatti, and Nissan GTR) was co-developed by Borg Warner (American company) and VW in 2003.

Source is the Borg Warner website:

"BorgWarner Transmission Systems - Began production of DualTronic Wet Clutch and Mechatronic Control Modules, co-developed with Volkswagen for its revolutionary new 6-speed Dual Shift Gearbox (DSG) in Europe."

  • Nissan didn't steal from anyone, because the transmission of the GTR was designed -from what I've read- entirely by BorgWarner.

  • it's not so much stealing, but "borrowing" from their parent group. Porsche does have control over VW/Audi

  • Not true. Porsche invented the dual clutch transmission in the early 1980's for their LeMans program.

  • And Sport Quattro S1 race car by Audi.

  • Are you Matt Farah or just the owner of this account?

  • matt farah

  • I'm jealous of your guys's track days and stuff, the nearest track to me is in Montreal, 18 hours away :( tear

  • Good job at making me google german on the end there

  • yeah... what does that mean in German?

  • and apparently only bugatti has the twin clutch down with the high torque output. Pssst Nissan, you should pull the transmission apart to see how they dealt with that issue

  • I bet hes fired before this video hits 10 000 views. :D Well done.

Whats up with the Launch contol these days? Seems like it's a big NO! NO! on these new sports/supercars. Why the hell do they add it there if it damages the car?!

  • apparently the Porsche one is very durable, and can handle hundreds of launches over the lifetime of the car. They just don't advise doing it over and over again repeatedly.

  • quick question though. Is it going to be on the gt2 and how are they going to deal with the high torque issue

  • no word yet on the GT2, will keep you posted.

  • Who are you?

  • matt

  • Oh. Hi Matt :)

  • Sounds About right.

  • Ouch man, you could get him fired for that. What a way to mis use his trust. O WELL, at least i will have more fun behind the wheel.

  • don't always believe what you see on TV.

  • It's just a joke dude. They're making fun of the Nissan GT-R cuz in that car if u disengage the VDC u void the warranty.

  • is anyone else saddened at the death of the manual?

  • yep

  • nop, only manual for me :)
