Platinum from 1979 must be underrated. But there is a reason for that, the reason is when Oldfield was going for the synth based thing, more vocals and lesser genuine celt music.

These reels could play for 4 hours each, and once it could be played in both side of the tape, 4 hours and more were dedicated to Mike Oldfield. Ther emaining tape space was dedicated to Vangelis. Oh dear Mike, the band was spot on, you were not. And shame on you for not mentioning many of the people in your band in your autobiography. Tim Cross in particular. The guy that was basically your live music manager for live tours who knew your music inside because, simply, he had to. You are a genius, yes, but genius is just a word and explains nothing in real terms. Supported by an immensley talented band who I am sure benefited to a degree from your success but gave more than they received.

@ColinBobbyDartford regarding the band being "spot on", if you're referring to that rather amusing bit at 1.20, that is entirely the drummers mistake who miscues. Four bars of 5/4, Morris (RIP) instead counts 4/4 on the last bar and throws the whole shebang off. As for the rest of the performance, I think everyone is pretty good really, Mike included.

@celebrityscience I always felt that Mike fails to put the pick into mouth and start playing the next part fast enough, being him out of sync. IMHO the band slows down for a split second, and the tempo of that entire piece is slowed down considerably.

Das sind alles Spitzenmusiker. Tim Cross spielt Keyboard wie der Teufel. Auch der Rest gefällt mir sehr gut. Ich finde das Konzert sehr gelungen. Bei 1:23 findet Mike nicht direkt (er liegt kurz daneben) den Wechsel weil er den Sound der Gitarre ändern muss, aber ist schon toll der Typ!

I've been going back and watching these Montreux videos and they are pretty great! Crazy to see the live instrumentation, for some reason i never saw Mike as a guitarist. His stuff is super intricate and although he is a multi-instrumentalist i am still surprised to see him fronting a band.

As much as i love the album version, this live version of of platinum is sooo much better. It has so many incredible and intricate fills. The guitar and synth tones are also just incredible. Way less kinda cheesy than on the album. This dvd is my fave thing i have by mike with maybe the exception of ommadawn. I wish you could get this on cd aswel as dvd!

In 1981 I did see that concert in tv. I recorded the sounds with a normal tape recorder. The quality is awful, but I'd like that version of platinum so so much. Now I can listen to it in much better quality. That makes me a rich man!!! Thank you whobearUK for posting this vid!!!
