  • Thank you so much for taking the trouble to produce this. I first started to play the guitar as a teenager back in the 70s and this was one of my favourite pieces to play. I spent ages trying to work out all the twiddly bits that Page puts into the live version, working only from my vinyl copy of TSRTS but never cracked even the studio solo. After many years away from the guitar (and a midlife crisis later!) I have finally got myself a new guitar and at last can try 2 master the solo. Thx.

  • PRS Santana :)

  • How do you pick in section 9? I'm trying to pluck every string but can't do it even close to speed.

  • @mattp1821 ... my only advice is to practice it at a slower speed, and then slowly work your way up to the right speed. One way to do this is to take the original song and slow it down using Windows Media Player, while you practice against it. Go to Now Playing --> Enhancements --> Play Speed Settings. In addition, it might be easier to do pull-offs from the 5th note to the 6th note, and then also from the 8th note to the 9th note in this section.

  • great lesson. I've seen it done much worse, and less accurately. I really appreciate this style of lesson. Been trying to play this for 20 yrs w tabs alone...you break it down very well....and play it accurately!

  • Really helpful lesson :) would be great if you could have a click track for the slow bits and then fast bits. It'd be easier to know when to play along with the full speed bits.

  • Cheers this an great lesson it is broken up well and the tab helps tremendously thanks for taking the time. :)

  • Hey in section 1 what means the note before the. 8 ? I talking about the pull of (7-5) with the rotated arc ?

  • @TonyMontana1079 ... the rotated arc is just another pull off. The tablature software that I used turned it upside down, for reasons I do not know.

  • YOU ROCKS MAN!!!

  • i started to play this solo 2 days ago and it's nearly done. Thanks a lot for this perfect lesson!!!

  • I cannot for the life of me get the timing right.

  • You make this easier to understand.. I have been trying to play this for a long time. Thanks.

  • Thank you guys so much for posting this solo!!! It's totally awesome. I have wanted to play this solo my whole life but never had the chance until I came across this video. I can now play it and it's AWESOME!! Thanks a lot!! Cliff.

  • Section 7 makes me want to cry

  • Great to find a quality channel like this.

  • thanks dude!

  • Ya this really helped me

  • note to all guitar 'teachers' on youtube: this is what a lesson should be like. The right amount of explanation, and moves at a moderate a pace.

  • What pickups are in the beautiful prs, man?

  • Carlos santana!

  • It will help me to cover this song with violin, thank you

  • lot's of pinky dude xD

  • You sir,are AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • el peluca sapeeeeee

  • I love you

  • This solo is pretty damn hard lol.

  • Ermm do you tune your guitar in anyway to get the correct sound?

  • im sorry but i just cant do that 2 step bend. lol my fingers burn

  • Its a wig!

  • thanks for the lesson.. you re the best ;)

  • excellent tuto thank you!

  • That hair looks very real!!

  • no tapping, no sweeping, quite straightforward :)

Nice lesson, looking forward for more.

  • @PDXguitarfreak THANKS!!!! I Learned This Solo in Only 2 Weeks with your Video THANKS a lot!!!!!!

P.D. Can you do a Comfortably Numb Video Like This?? : D

  • what do does barely seen numbers mean?

like at 6:20 when the 20th fret is supposed to be played on the second string twice and the second one is barely seen.

    PLEASE ANSWER

  • @vajeksa1 ... those are just "ghost notes".. I would not pay much attention to them. That is how the tabs that I copied showed it. In most cases, it simply means that the notes are still being played or sounding out without vibrato - I know that can be confusing, but again I would not recommend paying much attention to those.

  • Thank you, I always regarded this solo as impossible for me. Now I rock with it due to your great teaching...

  • How long have you been learning for this solo?

  • @Mr99Jake ... I was playing this solo within 2 years of learning to play lead guitar (I played rhythm guitar for 3 years before I attempted to do leads). I have now been playing for 28 years. However, the number of years is not important... what matters is how much time you spend practicing. I have seen people that have played for only 5 years that can out play me, because they are very committed. Well, they might not play as sexy as me, but they can play more technically. ;)

  • @PDXguitarfreak "Well, they might not play as sexy as me" PURE WIN ! Thumbs up, Like and Fav ! :) great video !

  • @PDXguitarfreak so true, a guy can pick up a guitar and play two chords every day for one hour... fast forward 20 years... do you think he'll be able to play anything but those two chords? I think not. maybe three chords. That's why it doesn't pay to do open string trills and "pickslides" all day like a wanker and yes the sexyness comes with experience!!!! hahaha "you gots to go out to the woodshed!!"

  • your awsome ! IM GONNA SUB !

  • hair?

  • @cjames679 ... lots of it ;)

  • Dude u are awesome :D

  • getting the feel for the solo is the hardest

  • Could you please tell me your amp settings?

  • @mattp1821 ..I have added some info in the notes section of the page, on the tone, etc.

  • Your a Legend!!

  • great lesson, can you please do Stone free by Jimi Hendrix solo? thanks

  • Hey mate, could you tell us the amplifire settings? Nice work there by the way, i liked it good job !

  • @MrPastellakis Thanks! I have added some info in the notes section of the page, on the tone, etc.

  • took me 4 hours to nail this :)

  • great vid dude i love it love the hair to :D

  • Nice lesson, it helps me learn the solo's licks a lot better. Cool technique with the pinky.

  • donde puedo imprimir la tablatura?

  • Awesome!!!! :)

  • Thank you dude! I've learned it! Thanks to you! Rock on!! \m/

  • lovin the fro bro; damn good vid...blew everyone away when i whipped it out. (the song)

  • I have a little problem :S I can play this solo, but the sounds.... I work whit this settings:

    Gain - 4

    Treble - 8

    Mid - 3

    Bass - 7

    Reverb - 2

On my marshall 100FX (100w), on the overdriven. But my sounds are...... Help pls :S My guitar is an old Aria pro II

  • @MrAmbicio I've got gain at 6, Bass at 5, Mid and Treble at 6 and reverb at 4. It sounds pretty good to me, though it isn't spot on with the song.

I think your main problem is that your mid is scooped too low really.

  • @kiljoy12345678 Thank you :-) Its better :P

  • @kiljoy12345678 ... good advice! You beat me to answering. :) More mids is typically better for classic rock guitar solos (actually I prefer them in most solos regardless of the genre). Rock on

  • Cool, thanks.

I've been playing for 35 years and never learned this. Now, 15 minutes later, I can!

  • i'm desperately trying to get this nailed acousticly, but i find that the hammer ons just die out and it ruins the flow :( is there any point trying?

    :'(

  • @theycallmejamesy ... There are two big bends toward the end which are probably not going to work on an acoustic guitar. There are ways you can get creative to work around it, but I honestly wouldn't attempt to play the solo on an acoustic. Other people might disagree, but that's my opinion.

  • @theycallmejamesy It's all about how the acoustic is set up... Instead of bends slide the notes, other than that good luck :/

  • @theycallmejamesy yo i dont have an electric i play everything this to on acoustic keep workin itll come to you

  • @theycallmejamesy buying a electirc guitar

  • nice guitar man im still in the erly stages of guitar but this helped a lot nice tutorial

  • i started to play stairway to heaven when i was 13, but i never learned solo, so i think it is time for me to learn it finally!

Thanks a lot man, it helps me a lot!

  • thanks alot m8, means alot for guitar players like me :)

  • guitar?

  • @MrSrbija97 ... the guitar is a Paul Reed Smith (PRS) Custom 24... I can't remember the year off the top of my head, but I believe I bought it new in 2003 or 2004

  • What string gauge was this played with? :)

  • @saizmeerack .. I used 9s. I used to use 10s but I'm getting old and lazy :)

  • Fantastic lesson man. Thanks for putting in the time to do such a top quality tutorial. Awesome!

  • Very helpful, and well organised thanks!!

  • MY BIGGEST THANK I GIVE TO YOU!!!!!!!!!

  • Been working on this again, got it pretty good at around 60% speed ;) I just wanted to mention, it would be cool if the vid had section labels that were onscreen all the time, like there could be "sec. 2" up in the upper left the whole time you're demonstrating it. Just to help when youre jumping around between sections.

  • Thank you very much, subscribed and liked :)

This was an awsome lesson! :D

  • this helped me a sight, WOOOOOOOOOOOOOO thank you

  • Gibsons are the best for stairway to heaven apparantly

  • Ok fuck this, im gettin me a fuckin gibson guitar like this guy

  • ç_ç Section 7 is impossible for me... is there a technique?

  • 0:57 LOL

  • thanx, I checked out a lot of other vids but none of them worked cuz they were moving too fast. It was a good idea to put it all in sections.

  • thanx mate great video it healped me a lot learning this epic solo.. thanx !!

  • GREAT PRS guitar!

  • Thanks man, using this video i learned solo on PIANO although there is a tutorial dedicated to piano :) you rock !

  • THIS IS A VERY GREAT VIDEO LESSON THANK YOU YOU HAVE BEEN A VERY GOOD TEACHER FOR ME :)

  • section 1: Ok let's do this, hey it's not so hard

    section 6: Whoa ok...

    section 7: ....

  • Nice thanks :) too bad I can't finish learning right now it's 1 in the morning :P

  • Thanks man

  • nice fro bro... oh ya and nice skills too X3

  • You should try using tree finger, but thank you. Nice vid and nice hai:-p

  • you call this relatively straight forward!?

  • @Ca11meron ... I guess it depends on what you are used to. I'm speaking relative to something like Yngwie or Vai. :)

  • @PDXguitarfreak i got the Yngwie instructional video back in the day and found it much easier to get under my fingers than this! not sure why,it is simply a basic A min pentatonic solo...thanks for posting this, i never would have been able to learn this on my own and its much more accurate than some of the others on here

  • @PDXguitarfreak i know what you mean stil pretty tricky

  • thank you very much for this great video

  • thanks alot for this, very helpfull

  • nice lesson, thank you very much for posting it =)

But i have a question. How you do this "effect" in the first bend ? i really like to now pliz =)(sorry for my english)

  • @allan012345678910 ... hello, and thank you! The effect is simply a vibrato at the top of the bend. Bend the string up (one step) and shake it :)

  • @PDXguitarfreak ok thank you very mush. Nice hair by the way ;)

  • best guitar lesson on youtube

  • Possibly the best STH solo vid I've found!

  • I'll excuse your afro only because you have fantastic fingers.

  • @K3NN3THrock umm... they're in this vid -.-

  • sorry but i need the tabs jaja and i want to now where i cant find this tabs??

  • @K3NN3THrock ... you can find many tabs at ultimate-guitar . com. I use the Powertab format. To download the Powertab software (for free), you can find it at Download . com. Rock on!

  • tabs???

  • @K3NN3THrock ... yes "tabs" is short for tablature. Tablature is the method of notating the music you see me using on the screen with each line representing a string on the guitar and the numbers primarily indicating where you fret the notes on the guitar neck.

  • dude thank you so much!!!

    keep rockin' :D

  • I actually adore you for posting this video.

  • thanks dude, tabs helped a lot!

  • Thank you for such a well done guitar lesson. Very few guitar lessons have the tab and the fingering at the same time. I picked up the solo rather quickly because of how well you structured. Thanks and hope you keep posting more lessons for us rocker wanna bees!

  • this is a really good vid. you must have spent hours making this. thanks!

  • I'm having trouble on section 7, I just can't play that part fast enough. Any tips or advice?

  • @NeverBeBored08 keep practicing is the best advice IMO.

When I learned this solo I had trouble with that repeating lick too but some weeks later I managed to play it smoothly :)

  • what amp settings to get that?

  • @ffheim ... I don't remember, as I tend to change things up quite a bit. But most likely it was something like this:

presence 5; resonance 6; treble 6; mids 5; bass 5; gain 5. However, I probably also did a midrange boost using my 1/2 rack mount EQ with an upwards curve peaking at around a 12db boost at 1k (I used to do that quite a bit back then... nowadays I just boost the mids on the amp, so I would turn the mids up to 6 )

  • @ffheim ...part 2... actually, I should clarify. These days when playing leads (and not using the rack EQ), I generally try to match the mids level to the treble level, and turn the mids down a little maybe to 3, 4, or 5 for rhythm guitar, depending on the song. Fortunately, my amp has multiple channels which makes it easy to switch between mids levels with just a footswitch.

  • Thanks to you i learned how to play the solo, keep rocking and than you.

  • thank you

  • Why do you change your shirt all the time :O

  • @EenGroteNeuspulk ... so I don't smell bad. :)

  • dude can you go into more detail about the 4 note lick been trying to get it for ages and can never get the timing right

  • @RockMetalAndStuff ... the best advice I can give is to use Windows Media Player to slow it down. Open Media Player, click on Now Playing --> Enhancements --> Play Speed Settings. From there you can choose the speed at which the song plays. By slowing the song down and practicing it, it should come easier to you. As you get more comfortable playing it, slowing start increasing the speed

  • @RockMetalAndStuff I can never get the intro lick after the bend right,. I can't get the fucking timing

  • what did you use for the effects i dont care what pedal but just like what, ex distortion reverb chorus wah( i know not wah) etc.

  • @reviewsnake ... no distortion pedal, as I used the amp's distortion (it's a Peavey JSX). Some reverb was used, and a little bit of delay. It's been a long time but I probably used just a tiny bit of chorus too.

  • I tapped the dislike button just for your horrible hair.

  • @markdeluca94 ... LOL you should see the hair on my balls.. actually, you'd probably get off on it, so forget it.

  • @markdeluca94 ... LOL you should see the hair on my balls.. .actually, forget it... you'd probably get off on it ;)

  • THANNK YOU! almost got it down. What guitar are you using?

  • @Fiednips ...it's a Paul Reed Smith Custom 24

  • lol u might have seen this before, but the dislike bar is like lady gaga's penis, its very small and shouldn't be there

  • Thanks so much :D

  • Thank you so much !! :D

  • great!

  • Dude, that was f*cking awesome!I'm working hard on it,Let me ask you, what should I do to improve the capacity of get a music by ear? It's pretty hard...

  • @theperplexthinker ... Thanks! And I am not sure how to answer your question other than to say keep playing and listening my friend :)

  • 'fro, drugs and rock n roll

  • what do i do if my guitar has only 20 frets?

  • @offspringlad312 ... are you messing with me? LOL ... either way, you should be fine :)

  • @PDXguitarfreak the last part doesnt come out as good

  • WTF iz upp with ur hair..i cant take u seriously haha..nah other than tht ur great :)

  • Now... I can play it! In this time i finished learning this solo. I can play it - but now i need few hours to train :D

  • Thanks brahski. I officially finished it today. There's maybe one version cleaner than yours but this one rocks much harder. Question: bpm of the backing track (or where you downloaded)?

  • What an awesome and helpful video. Thanks for Sharing your skills!

  • thanks a bunch, really helped me refine my noting

  • fuck you're cool, i bet you get all the chicks

  • @raikouruby001 ...you know it brother. They like to run their fingers through my silky fro (both of my fros)

  • hahaha this guy is jamming! awsome bro!

  • tnx man, you really helped me out^_^. And you've got nice hair too.

  • Thanks :D

  • thx man i want to learn this so i can get the girl i like

  • @kingwoofwoof

HAHAHAHAHAH playing guitar is not about getting the girl you like... Enjoy the music first and most important... The rest will fall in place ;)

  • pure guitar bliss :)

  • A simple question : where did you buy your wig ? :P

I'd like to have the same next week to play in front of people at my high school ! :D

  • wow almost got it, just some details to fix, thanks!

  • well put together! your expression is really inspiring man! only watched a bit but noticed that your playing doesnt match the tab for the end of section 3 - you tab 2 Cs on the G string but you play 3. You also have some timing to tighten up. When you play the slowed down clip near the end of the same movement: the A and B notes on the D and G strings are played as 32nd's slowed down but as 16th's in your regular speed clips. thanks for the time invested man! this recording is helpful! cheers

  • Hey Man................I am having so much trouble with the guitar phrasing at 3x speed....on many of the sections! What do you suggest? I could listen to the recording but I'm basically doing that as I listen to you play... Btw....Paul Reed Smith guitars are made in the capital of my state..Maryland..

    Donnie

  • Thanks for the great lesson! Now I just have to try to play it through and increase my speed. I was wondering if you have the correct tabs for Trampled Underfoot? I've seen many incorrect tabs and covers and have been trying to figure it out for a year now. Would appreciate any help.

  • section 9...

    almost there...

    so tired...

  • Kudos to you sir, that was impressive and insightful!

  • That's a nice PRS, great lesson!

  • I have learned this solo from you ... feel free to check it and give me ur thoughts ..sheers mate :)
