nice ceiling. i'm installing a similar ceiling with those thin 1/8" thick home depot pine planks, tongue in groove, on a porch ceiling. porch has windows and is somewhat climate controlled, but not entirely. do the planks need to be stained/varnished on both sides prior to install?? can i do it on one side? can i install the planks with no stain? thanks!!!!
@snakeclaw Please always go to my AsktheBuilder website when you have questions like this. ALL of your questions that you ask are answered in many past columns I've written about wood ceilings and installing wood ceilings. Make good use of my search engine.
Does any special care need be taken to mitre the corners. How would you suggest holding the boards in the mitre box--i.e. do they need to be held at the same angle they'll be put onto the ceiling? Thanks!
@echtconservative Because they are on the inside of the hip, the only parts of the cut that touch are what you see out front. This means there is a void space behind the joint. Thus, you just hold them flat on the miter saw table.

How did you put up the first plank that was already there?
Verradonairun 1 year ago
@Verradonairun You have to flat nail that one on the face of the wood. Easy.

@AsktheBuilder I mean the plank that was already there, on the wall. It looks like it's sticking out of the wall.

Did he use a kind of staple gun to install?

You can see the nail gun in the video. Watch it again. Shots 1 and 1/4 finish nails at an angle through the tongue of the wood.
