This is a careful blend of reality with a big step forward. We are not going to get religions out of social services any time soon, but with Obama, the door is open for secular groups to compete equally for the opportunity to help others.

I think a secular humanist homeless shelter would be a great idea.

I think an educational help program run by the "Brights" would be fabulous.

My expectation is that secular groups can and will provide more and better help than religious groups.

You fail to get what Obama meant in that video. He didn't say they were going to get involved in the white house but in making typical communities better.

Although I don't support religious faith, I think this idea is good because it's attempting to make the community better rather then just shoving religious beliefs in peoples face as they had been doing previously.

*IF* the plan was to favor one religion over another, it would be against the constitution. That is clearly not the plan. The idea here is that community organizations should not be discriminated against on the basis of religion. That's a good thing! I don't belong to any religion, but I can get behind careful partnership with groups without regard their their religious affiliation, especially when they're not allowed to proselytize or to be religiously choosy about who they help or hire.

Wow, this sounds great. But wait a second. Children (under 18) represents almost a third of the US population or 89 million children. This sounds like a case of too little too late. Lets face it, if the total number of faith and secular organizations were only touching one million children, while 88 million were slipping away, I think its time to rethink this strategy. Or is this just another way to mis-distribute tax dollars?

With the number of faith and secular groups around the country, one million seems like a drop in the bucket. 1/3 of the population is younger than 18 years of age or 89M as of 2001. This is a good case of a using nice words. Keeping 1 million children from getting in trouble and helping them, when 88million are not ... sounds like too little too late. The national Democratic party should have never abdicated the discussion about religion and faith. That gave the Republicans the entire stage nationally for years on this subject. Because of that, Republicans have made religion only about gays and abortion. Never is poverty and economic fairness and other issues discussed. I think Obama is on the right track by taking this discussion back from the Republicans and reshaping this discussion.
