  • wait.. um why am i watching this?

  • I have heard this called "backpuffing" we had this problem with our resolute, it was due to the stove pipe cap, it was all caked up with soot, once we cleaned that the stove worked great! no more back puffing!

  • The smoke is occurring due to ignition of hot gases which build up in the stove. It is not simply leaking smoke. Causes: not enough air intake and/or not enough draw in flue and/or wood is too dry (yes, too dry......not enough moisture content)

  • When starting your fire use a lot of paper and open all air intake on your stove, you need to heat your chimney to get a good draft, cold air in chimney is pushing down, a hot fire will push it up, creating a draft.

  • for you smoke problem on start up there is a new product called the DRAW COLLAR...just for applications like your...... ruth140@yahoo.com email me i can help you with that, it will solve your problem

  • can you burn coal in that wood stove

  • @firewoodguy2009 - I don't think so. I certainly wouldn't try it.

  • Your stove is back puffing. You need to open the air control to allow the stove to run a little hotter or close the control and let the stove cool a bit. The wood is hot giving off gas that builds up until "poof" it puffs into the room.

  • you do not have enough draft/exhaust. pressure is building up, firebox "burps" pushing enough smoke out flue and stove, sucks in some air (causing flames/burn), then repeats. Do you have a metal flue all the way up that chimney? If not, that is likely the problem.

  • I have the 1910 and it does the same thing when things need to be cleaned, which is often unless you leave it half way open or more.

I've had it 8 or 9 years and now it needs to be rebuilt, bottom grate is badly warped, so is the left door but not too much. Catalytic element is shot, so are all the brick, seals and gaskets everywhere.

Service here is $385. not included parts nor pick-up or delivery.

I used it round the clock.... I can count on one hand the times I lit it every season.

  • Check the catalytic combuster. Is it it clogged? Do you also have adequate draft in your flue? Proper draft and adequate intake air are often the primary causes of correct stove burn.

  • a well designed wood stove wont do this get a stove that is air tight peheats the combustion air . a good woodstove dosnt need a catalytic element

  • this operator is depriving this fire enough intake air.

  • Same stove, same issue. I've found it to be common among VC Defiant owners. clean the catalytic element and always burn hotter than 500 while cat is engaged. I burn around 600-700ish, which keeps the glass cleaner anyways. Great stove... the Englander is so ugly.. why do so few companies make nice looking stoves??!!!! I love VC's designs.

  • I had a chimney service on it a few weeks ago and they did wonders. They cleaned out the catalytic converter but also discovered the mesh on the chimney cap had a lot of creosote build up. It's running like a champ now.

  • google stove "whuffing"

The problem is caused by depriving a hot fire of air too quickly. We have the exact same problem with our VC defiant. It helps to gradually turn down the air and then close damper. We leave the air valve open 1/3 overnight.

  • I had the same exact issue with a new {2007} defiant non cat stove at the low fire setting. It was resoved by sealing around the joint between the stove and the stove pipe. This allowed the air to enter whee it was supposed to as opposed to backdrafting in from the leaking seam.

    Hope this helps

  • You should buy an Englander wood stove! I did and it is the best wood stove on the market.

Model 30-NCH heats up to 2,200 sq. ft. house.

    Made in West Virginia, USA

I got the optional blower fan for it also & WOW! What a GREAT Wood Stove!!! I am very happy with it.

  • how would you know if Englander is the best? Did you try all of them, or is it best because that's what you bought?

  • The light off temp. for a catalytic combustor is 500 degrees. As you mentioned in your video, you stated the temp. to be 400 deg.? If you run the stove with the catalytic combustor engaged at that low of a temp you will continue to clog it up. Try not shutting the stove down too quickly until a hot enough fire is established and keep your air controls open. Also, very important, it would be wise (if not already done) to line the chimney all the way to the top with a 6" stainless liner system.

  • I was going to say either you ctaalytic is old and needs to be replaced or not enough air...by the way catalytic is old school with vermont castings everburn its a lot cleaner and easier to use, i highly reccmend!

  • Did you ever get this issue resolved? I am thinking about installing the same model stove.

  • I did. It was simply air starved and I needed to open the air vents more. There may be more to it, but that works for now. I'm probably going to clean the catalytic converter as a previous person suggested. I also have a problem getting it to start without smoking up the house. The horizontal chimney run exacerbates that problem. My simple fix for that is to put a fan in the window blowing in, pressurize the room before starting the fire to get it to draw.

  • Hi,

The problem is that your catalytic converter is clogged. You will have to remove the hood throat cover in the fire box on the back and using a shop vac suck out all of the ash and other crap which has clogged the honey comb of the cat.

The smoke you see is poisoning your house with dioxins and happens every time you see a larger flame because the ability of your cat to pass hot gasses quickly is diminish by the glog in it.
