I use to agree but vista is getting better, problem is a lot of business software now is only for vista. the first OS is XP and the second is Vista. I had to turn off my Visual stuff because my computer was old and with Camtasia it was taking a few hours to load the start menu.
To be honest i do not know why that would happen but i would run a scan disk on your C:\ drive.
In : Computer -> rightclick on c: drive -> in the tools tab -> in error checking section click check now; then check the 2 check boxes that say scan free space and auto fix errors then click start. it will tell you "do you want to scan at next start up?"
then say yes then restart your computer at this point it can take ~2 hour
at first before i defraged my hard drive, it had about 10 GB left. after the defrag, it now has about 7 gb left. it was total. about a 3gb difrence from defraging.
i have a 120GB hard drive in my laptop in using now.
20GB is used to dual boot windows 7 beta, and the rest is for windows vista. most of the data on it is my games, and music. the rest is my videos and pictures.
could have been something with the FileSystem not reporting the size of space right.
Because Modern Hard Drives are so big they story the free space and other little info in a Journal (on NTFS), sometimes that Journal can get the Wrong Information. the Defragmentation could have fixed it. thing is this problem is Rare. only happens if your computer had a crash or sudden shutoff.
often times 3rd party Defraggers are a little more efficient, but I use the windows defrag program because when I get called to a clients house I have to tell them why I am installing another app and why. If you are a home user with very little demand then the windows is good. Now servers and other high demand computers use a high end defragmentors.
that is weird. well you can get it by going to start->run and in the box type in %SystemRoot%\system32\dfrgui.exe another option if you are on vista is to search for dfrgui.exe
Yes it can. Disk Defrag can be a long time I have seen one take 3 hours. But it is worth it you can get a Big system boost from it. on my XP machine i set up a small partition on my hard drive with very little data.
Defragmentation moves all your data closer together and to the beginning of your hard drive. Your Hard Drive always looks for data at the start (or forthest from the center) like a record reads from the outside in. that way it is faster to read your data than before. it is great if you play 1st person shooters because it take a little less time when the data is at the beginning of the drive and you will notice a little less lag when playing online.
after it is done yes. Well you can still play your music and games during Defragmentation but it is not recommended because the Defragmenter uses so much system resources to run
My very next video is on just that but Defragmenting also helps with speed by moving all the data to the top sectors of the hard drive. Decreasing seek time, which decreases loading time
Yes it is safe. and in my 10 years of experence it has never removed anything ever. the increase in hardrive space was mostly with older computers (i left that in the discription because i have herd of it happening on Windows XP still)
files are made up of pieces. after time the pieces get separated on your hard drive. defraging puts all all the pieces together to speed up ur computer. The Wikipedia article explains it a little more in depth
its gonna take some time on w7 but i got 7.2 in score on my pc :D so its gonna take 45 min ...

well after if was done, befor i did the defrag i had 10 GB of HDD space. now i have 7GB of HDD space. is that supose to happen?
sindiewen 3 years ago
That is not normal.
Is that total or free space that was decreased?
