I think it's that depressive notion that despite her efforts to see someone again, going on this journey to find out who's on the otherside of the door. If you really think about it, this game is really showing ppl what it's like to be in the afterlife, what if.. and what if your truly alone. What would you do? I felt maria's story was more interesting than James.

Silent Hill 2 is the best. Really msyterious, and full of such story, have to play it more than once to understand it all. This is the first one I played of the series. A good thing, because 4 & 5 were not good, and 1 & 3, well, suffice to say there is way too much 'cult' involement in those games. Yes it's in this as well, but it is way more of a background thing, not really a part of the storyline at all. This, like Shattered Memoires, is more abut the psychology. SH2 has better music though.

@kdreamland Also, I think that the best Silent Hill games IMO are 1-4 (the Japanese games). I don't like the American SH games (from 5th to the upcoming 8th) for some reason. SH2 is the best of the series.

Ernest Baldwin is a ghost. That's why there's nothing in the room. Interesting stuff. I can't understand though; who opened the fireplace on the 1st floor? Was it Ernest? But I heard quick footsteps before the fireplace was opened, so how can a ghost make sounds (footsteps)? Maybe it can. Also, I expected a bit more detailed ending, like what did Ernest do after he got the bottle of white liquid?

@kdreamland The white liquid is one of the few needed ingredients to revive a dead person. You need to collect those ingredients (the books are probably needed to know how to perform the ritual) to get the "Rebirth" ending. James rows the boat to a church with the body of dead Mary to revive her. Just like this ending, the "Rebirth" doesn't reveal what happens after James gets to the church. I think that the best ending is the "Leave" ending. The UFO and Dog endings are for fun =)

The haunted mansion is really scary. I had played this scenario b4. There are rooms and dark long corridors which would make you scared. When Ernest asked Maria to get a white oil, I guessed that Ernest would use Maria to rebirth his daughter, Amy, but finally the ending was out of my expectation.

@TLmemories if you read the notes you find next to a corpse early in the game, you'll find that they're not just symbols inside his head, but in fact very physical. enough to kill whoever they're haunting.

To the people who don't understand this scenerio. This scenerio explains hwo Maria came into Silent Hill. Like the comments below, she wanted to live. She was born from James' wish. James wanted Mary to be like Maria. It was his sexual urge towards her. Maria's James' punishment. She dies and keeps coming back. Silent Hill is punishing James with the monsters, damp otherworlds, and Maria.

@1lu2ma3ca Angela is another person being punished in Silent Hill and so is Eddie. Their otherworlds cross with each other when they meet. It shows you that James is not the only person being punished.

*spoilers* Angela is punished because she killed her father after he sexually abused her and Eddie for shooting a football player in the leg and killing a dog because he believed everyone was making fun of him. Laura is an orphan looking for Mary. She doesn't see monsters because she's innocent.

Well, he didn't simply "wish" I'm using the word "wish" because Maria is what James pictured Mary to be.

James felt lonely and had sexual urges towards Mary when she got sick and stayed in the hospital.

Remember, James doesn't know he's being punished until the end of the game when he says, "That's why I needed you. I needed someone to punish me for my sins..."

Silent Hill created a personal hell for him, so even the monsters have some "sexual meaning" to them. Ex: Mannequins.

Maria's story is a sad one, especially at the tip end of the game. *SPOILERS* She really just wanted to survive, and she was afraid that James would get over her, so it was kinda like she was gonna take him down with her.

I mean look at the end of this ending when she walks on and says "James...". It's just sad to watch because she's born with nothing else to live for.

For many people this(along with other things like Maria saying "I am if you want me to be") proves the theroy that the two versions of SH that you play in(I have heard there is a third normal one) Is just a manifestaion of James' thoughts. And Marias multiple deaths is James' trying to convince himslef that he did not kill his wife, and the feeling that he needed to be punished for it.

Every single time. I hate it. I complete a SH game and then either the ending is too sad, or I just don't know which ending to belive!

But the story... It's so good. I can't help it... I need to play the game... Goddammit, I hate and love the creators :(

The born from a wish scenario confirms my theory that Maria is Mary which was resurrected by "god" I mean she has her memories, in Amy`s room: the stuffed animal comment, she talked about Laura. Maria never met Laura but Mary did. She has this split personality thing. There`s a comment about this in Brookheven hospital ( I don`t remember where) only appears once.

Ernest is a ghost who tried to resurrect his daughter when he was alive. Maria is the proof that the ritual could work efficiently.

Now I get it!

After I finished the game, when you select the main scenario again, there are new items scattered around Silent Hill. I managed to find the blue gem, which is used to get the UFO ending in the end, the white liquid, which is used to get the Rebirth ending in the end (to revive Mary) and some other stuff. I'll be aware and see if I can find the bone key to unlock the Dog ending. I got the Leave ending (happy) when I finished it the 1st time.
