this is really good but could you post again with the left hand doing base as can only see the right hand could you do with full scale as can only see part of base hand
Covered this (and couple own songs) way back at 1999 with Roland W-30 keyboard on school's "Artistic Endeavour" showcase. Sampled the loop and the string sound, rest was onboard sounds. Friend provided a extended solo with electric guitar... Damn this brings back some nice memories!
As the Revolutions album starts with this loop, it's quite easy to sample.
I've wanted to do this song for a long time, and once I got the M3 (my first synth with sampling capability) I was finally able to get that looped sound exactly the way it has to be.
Usually, I like to find my own sounds and style, but I felt this looped "machine run" (as it is called in the Roland D50 where it's from) sound defines the song so much that I wanted to get that exact sound for my cover.
I agree. In fact I have sampled the machine run from your vid as I can't find my cd, must be in the loft somewhere! Its the highest form of flattery you know!
I really like your drum track so I am working on building that up using an old synth I have with a fairly decent percussion set. Any tips on the beats or did you just use trial and error ?
@rfoshaug awesome , how many MB does the M3 hold of sampling and can use just use a USB stick to hold the samples or do you have to import them into the keyboard before you can use them .
rfoshaug after you looped the machine run sample, did you record it into the sequencer by holding one key down playing the loop for the entire song.
I have an oasys but i imagine its not too different. I dont know if there is another way of doing it. Is it possible to trigger this loop without actually holding a key down for the whole song and recording it .
I recorded it to the sequencer by holding the note for 4/4ths (ie. one full measure and one full loop of the sound), then repeated that measure again and again throughout the song. So the looping sound is technically retriggered every time.
This way, I can be sure that it stays in synch with the music. If I looped it the way you describe, I would have to be absolutely 100% accurate with the lenght of the loop vs. the speed of the song, or the loop would gradually go out of sync. :-)
Hey I like this a lot, but is this something Jarre only plays live, because i don't recognize hearing it on the "Revolutions" album? By the way, your Equinoxe 7/Arpeggiateur video is world class awesome!!!!!!
I've been a Jarre fan since I was four, but I never owned an original copy of "Revolutions" I have an old tape copy my dad made in the 80s, and I guess he just never put the song on there, so I guess I always thought what is Industrial Revolution Part I was actually the overture. Just checked it out on iTunes. Hey, you did a great cover!! Thanks for making aware of a Jarre track I never heard.
I'm playing live in the video. The part I play live is the lead string sound from the start of the song. Then, to allow me to play the solo live, the sequencer takes over the string (ie. I've pre-recorded the string sound during the solo part of the song).
All other sounds are pre-recorded due to having only 2 hands.
So the parts that look live, are live. And I can play them live anytime, anywhere. Of course the solo with all its vibrato and bends tends to be slightly different every time. ;-)
This is really cool. I don't normally listen to electronic music, but I like to be open minded when it comes to music. I should check out some more Jean Michel Jarre :)
yo I want to get that M3 right now. Does it come with speakers? Or do I have to buy an amp? Or can I just connect it to my cpu speakers ? I'd appreciate it , thanks.
It does not come with speakers. With the right cable you can connect it to your stereo if your stereo has external inputs.
Or you could buy a set of ordinary PC speakers (that use a small jack plug) and use a converter plug to the big stereo jack to connect the M3's headphones output to the speakers.
If you buy an M3-73 or -88, they have nice flat areas on either side of the module for placing the speakers. The 61-key version have such areas, but they're not completely flat I think.
I use a lot of different drum kits. When I want a drum sound, I just search throuigh the kits and select a kit and a sound that fits my need, dedicating that sequencer track to that single drum sound. :-)
As for the "cling clang" percussive loop that runs from the start, it is sampled from the album. The sound Jarre used was actually a sound from the old (but new back in 1988) Roland D-50 called "Machine Run".
I've just sampled one loop of it from the album, and trigger it over and over.
Hey man, jazzy video. I was wondering though, on :37-1:15, what notes are the left hand playing? And on 1:17, are you playing two notes with the right hand or just adding modulation? And at 2:40, are you just playing all the regular notes going upwards, or is there some sort of sequence? Sorry if I'm asking a lot of questions, I'm just much better at playing with sheet music (which I can't seem to find) than by ear. Thanks.
The left hand is playing G#, F#, C# over and over again. I play two notes, an octave apart. At 01:12, I go from C# to D#.
At 1:17, I start playing two notes simultaneously with the right hand starting with a G# and a B.
At 2:40 (the start of the solo), I play G#1, D#1, G#1, D#2, G#2, G#1, D#2, G#2, D#3, D#2, G#2, D#3, G#3, B3, D#4, G#4, A#4 where the last of those notes is the long one at 2:43.
Btw, the number indicates the octave relative to where the solo starts.
Another interesting sequence in the solo is the one starting at 3:06 in the video: F#4, D#4, B3, F#3, F#4, B3, C#4 (double length on this one), F#3, A#3, F#4, C#4, A#3, F#3, C#4, A#3, D#3, F#3, A#2, F#3, small pause, F#3, D#3. And we're at 3:10. :-)
The metallic "machine run" beat is a sample that is looped over and over again. All other drums and percussion is from the M3's internal sounds (various drumkits).
All is controlled by the M3's sequencer, where I've laid down the drum tracks the old-fashioned way - by playing the keys. :-)
So I have not used the automatic drum track function, and I have not used the KARMA function.
The metallic "machine run" beat is a sample taken from the Revolutions CD, trimmed, edited and looped.
All other percussive sounds are from preset drumkits in the M3: "Tricki Kit", "Mashed Kit" (got 2 tracks using that), "Hard House Kit", and "Studio Standard Kit". Don't remember at the moment which percussive sounds come from which kit, but together they are played into their respective sequencer tracks to form the beat. I used loop overdub recording and copying to create the rythm.
Rfoshaug - I Love this track, I can use a sampler, But the m3 sampler is a tricky one isnt it, And that String sound, Is it a prog or combi?. Lol I love this, I would listen to this all day, And yes I know the trikki kit, Mashed Kit All drill samples and what not isnt it? And did you time-stretch the sample?
Yes, the M3's sampler is a bit tricky. I think the worst part is the fact that all samples must be reloaded every time you start the M3, and that the link between a program and the sample it uses is by a number given to the sample, so you get all these programs that are only usable if the correct corresponding samples are loaded. But it works okay I guess.
I haven't time-stretched the sample, I only cut it down to 1 loop in length and adjusted the level of it.
Thats kool man, the m3 has 1,200 and odd waveforms, gee take that to massive or fm8 that has around 70-80 waveforms(vst) the performance is there when you need it and think of the m3 as 16 world class software synths sitting at your hands!
Also the M1 in software can do this with combis, like set 2 timbres to midi channel 1, I think the Perc Organ and House Piano were the presets of all time, And Im sure they used that Trademark M1 Piano Sound for the BBC logo in the 90's (A Bit Of Topic there) Also these M1 Sounds are in the Producer.pcg file!
The string sound is made from 3 preset string programs in 3 different tracks (but all set to MIDI channel 1 so that they all respond to my playing on the keyboard).
They are: Program I-B035 Analog Strings Stereo (got 2 of that, one is an octave higher than the other to make a richer and fuller sound), and I-D003 Symphonic Bows to fatten up the sound a bit.
At 1:47 into the video you can see me turning up the volume level of the highest-pitched I-B035 a bit for the second "verse" in the song.
I played them manually into the sequencer (but did of course use quantizing to get the timing good).
I looped some bars in the sequencer while doing an overdub recording, so that I could add a beat here and a drum there, one by one and build the drum pattern.
"Korg speak" for quantizing is "resolution". It is a function where you can make each note you play snap to the nearest quarter-note, half-note etc.
If your Korg TR's sequencer is similar to that of my old Korg Karma (I believe it is), I think it is marked "Res:" on the display with a note sign showing the resolution of the quantizing. This is for quantizing the notes that you play into the sequencer.
Also, in the screen page called "Track edit" you can quantize tracks already recorded. :-)
Okay, PutFile wasn't really very good, as it only allows for playing back the clip, not downloading it. If you send me a private YouTube message with your email address, I can mail the .wav file to you.
rfoshaug, im copying you trying make the cover but i cant so im seeing ur video and learing it. ill put my cover on youtube but mine is on casio ctk511. on korg m3 it sounds better but you always got to try something different. im actually learning cover for the talent contest to make peoples faces pale :-) thanks for making cover. you are like the teacher for me. do more jarre's covers plzzzzz!
My Oxygene Part II video was removed due to a copyright claim from Francis Dreyfus Music (who own the original recording of Oxygene II, but not the song itself).
But now that Jarre himself has posted a YouTube video officially allowing fan covers and remixes of his songs, I'll re-record Oxygene II and post it, and maybe also post some other Jarre covers.
I want to thank Jarre for allowing this. He has obviously realized that such fan covers don't hurt sales (as their general quality and the sound quality here on YouTube are certainly no match for a professional studio recording), and might only increase sales as they make more people aware of the music.
So thank you for allowing this, Jarre. It's really a nice gesture to all those who like your music, not only for listening to but for performing as well.
It seems I can't post a web address in this comment box, but if you look at the address for this video, you can replace everything after the questionmark (after "watch?") with:
v=BhO7ZFxMEN8
Jarre's YouTube username is jeanmicheljarre and the video is called "Blog - fan videos".
Thank you. :-) The break before the solo was a necessity to give me time to change to the solo lead sound (while the M3's internal sequencer takes over synth string duties for the duration of the solo).
But it sounds cool, and with some added reverb to the "machine run" loop, it's quite successful in "pausing" the song while building anticipation for the solo, when the song again "explodes" into sound.
I don't understand how you do this, but I'm very, very, impressive, Yes, you're the man, I never see this so well played, it's like you were part of the band of JMJ.
I was going to just say that I hate Black Sabbath, but I actually did a search for Black Sabbath here on YouTube and played one of their songs from 1970 just to be sure I know what I'm talking about before answering to your comment.
So now I know how Black Sabbath sounds, and... (drumroll...)... I do hate Black Sabbath.
But if you like Black Sabbath then good for you. :-)
The sound is called "Revolutions Lead" and it's sound U-A001 on my M3. In other words, it's a sound I've made myself. :-)
It's based around a saw waveform, and not a very complicated sound. Also, not extremely close to the original solo sound from the album, but close enough. :-)
Yes, I sampled it from the original Revolutions CD by Jarre. As the song starts with this loop only, it was very easy to sample.
It really is an important ingredient for this song. It defines the sound of the entire piece, and it would be extremely difficult to program this sound using the onboard sounds of the M3 (or any other synth) only. So sampling is definitely the way to go on this one.
All other sounds and drums in my version of this song, however, are created without sampling.
Cool that's what I thought , because in the begining I had doubts that you were really playing this until I played it a few times to catch the differences between yours and the original. But then I was like there is no way that you re-program that D-50 loop and get it so close in sound to the original lool, have you seen this one youtube of jarre playing live and one of this synths had some dirt in the wheel or keys and it got OFF-TUNE during live performance, its funny !!
I'm going to buy this synth now. I'm pretty noob in this, because I have korg tr. So how does those drums "appears" in about 1:00? Have you programmed them to come or how?
Yes, the drums are recorded into the sequencer, just like the lead string sound during the part when I play the solo.
For the drums, I used loop recording (looped 2 measures) and laid down drum sound by drum sound. Then I copied those measures for the rest of the song, and erased the measures during the solo (because that part has different drums).
this is my 2nd comment... I dunno y I alwyz wanna look at this video again and again...maybe it's the sound coz its FAT, and you play really fantastic...this video inspired me to go to a music store and bash an M3 module, lol! joke! U inspired me to go to a store to configure out and play M3...Also, i've got some Ethnic Soundfonts here, how do I import them to M3???
Very well done. You really made best use of the sequencer there without becoming 'lazy' IE. the sequencer takes of the synth pad while you play the lead and switch back again after, makes it much more interesting.
I'm going rustle out my Chronology song book later at sit down with Reason 4 to see what I can come up with - You've inspired me!
bravo et merci pour ce morceau. Thanks for this cover, greatly played !, i have played it too, but not with the same keyboard unfortunately ;). good :)
It reminds me a lot of Purple Motion, a demo scene musician from 15 years ago or so ago. I wasn't familiar with Jarre's work at the time, so I never realized how much PM borrowed from Jarre.
Great video. Have been thinking about upgrading my Triton to an M3 an that may have been the decider. Nice playing, nicely controlled, not over the top dramatics like some posts. Thanks for sharing that with us.
Nothin beats that bend at about 2:50! Damn I've listened to that little lick like 90 times and it sounds so dulishus. I would've never heard of Jean Michel Jarre if it weren't for you and this vid being posted up on MatrixSynth.
Have you considered reuploading this in better format?

All other percussive sounds are from preset drumkits in the M3: "Tricki Kit", "Mashed Kit" (got 2 tracks using that), "Hard House Kit", and "Studio Standard Kit". Don't remember at the moment which percussive sounds come from which kit, but together they are played into their respective sequencer tracks to form the beat. I used loop overdub recording and copying to create the rythm.
rfoshaug 3 years ago
Rfoshaug - I Love this track, I can use a sampler, But the m3 sampler is a tricky one isnt it, And that String sound, Is it a prog or combi?. Lol I love this, I would listen to this all day, And yes I know the trikki kit, Mashed Kit All drill samples and what not isnt it? And did you time-stretch the sample?
DJBenniboy 3 years ago
Yes, the M3's sampler is a bit tricky. I think the worst part is the fact that all samples must be reloaded every time you start the M3, and that the link between a program and the sample it uses is by a number given to the sample, so you get all these programs that are only usable if the correct corresponding samples are loaded. But it works okay I guess.
I haven't time-stretched the sample, I only cut it down to 1 loop in length and adjusted the level of it.
rfoshaug 3 years ago
Thats kool man, the m3 has 1,200 and odd waveforms, gee take that to massive or fm8 that has around 70-80 waveforms(vst) the performance is there when you need it and think of the m3 as 16 world class software synths sitting at your hands!
DJBenniboy 3 years ago
Also the M1 in software can do this with combis, like set 2 timbres to midi channel 1, I think the Perc Organ and House Piano were the presets of all time, And Im sure they used that Trademark M1 Piano Sound for the BBC logo in the 90's (A Bit Of Topic there) Also these M1 Sounds are in the Producer.pcg file!
DJBenniboy 3 years ago
The string sound is made from 3 preset string programs in 3 different tracks (but all set to MIDI channel 1 so that they all respond to my playing on the keyboard).
They are: Program I-B035 Analog Strings Stereo (got 2 of that, one is an octave higher than the other to make a richer and fuller sound), and I-D003 Symphonic Bows to fatten up the sound a bit.
At 1:47 into the video you can see me turning up the volume level of the highest-pitched I-B035 a bit for the second "verse" in the song.

Oh one question. Are those drums made with RPPR or did you play them for yourself?
stumppi 3 years ago
I played them manually into the sequencer (but did of course use quantizing to get the timing good).
I looped some bars in the sequencer while doing an overdub recording, so that I could add a beat here and a drum there, one by one and build the drum pattern.
rfoshaug 3 years ago
Is this quantizing a new thing because I own Korg tr and Have never heard of quantizing?
stumppi 3 years ago
"Korg speak" for quantizing is "resolution". It is a function where you can make each note you play snap to the nearest quarter-note, half-note etc.
If your Korg TR's sequencer is similar to that of my old Korg Karma (I believe it is), I think it is marked "Res:" on the display with a note sign showing the resolution of the quantizing. This is for quantizing the notes that you play into the sequencer.
Also, in the screen page called "Track edit" you can quantize tracks already recorded. :-)

Oh there it was! Very new and useful thing for me, thanks alot!

where did you got the industrial bells from i cant find 'em :-(
szymon981 3 years ago
If you're thinking of that looped sound that is there from the very beginning of the video, I sampled it into my M3 from the Revolutions CD.

Sorry I didn't see your previous message. I'll try to upload it to PutFile. I'll send you the link in a YouTube message when it's ready for download.
It'll be in .wav format so that you can load it into most types of samplers (including any Korg).
rfoshaug 3 years ago
i hope youll upload the looped soud dont you
szymon981 3 years ago
Okay, PutFile wasn't really very good, as it only allows for playing back the clip, not downloading it. If you send me a private YouTube message with your email address, I can mail the .wav file to you.

szymon981 3 years ago
My Oxygene Part II video was removed due to a copyright claim from Francis Dreyfus Music (who own the original recording of Oxygene II, but not the song itself).
But now that Jarre himself has posted a YouTube video officially allowing fan covers and remixes of his songs, I'll re-record Oxygene II and post it, and maybe also post some other Jarre covers.
:-)
rfoshaug 3 years ago
I want to thank Jarre for allowing this. He has obviously realized that such fan covers don't hurt sales (as their general quality and the sound quality here on YouTube are certainly no match for a professional studio recording), and might only increase sales as they make more people aware of the music.
So thank you for allowing this, Jarre. It's really a nice gesture to all those who like your music, not only for listening to but for performing as well.
rfoshaug 3 years ago
did JMJ post a video himself? where can i find that??
Riezz73 3 years ago
It seems I can't post a web address in this comment box, but if you look at the address for this video, you can replace everything after the questionmark (after "watch?") with:
v=BhO7ZFxMEN8
Jarre's YouTube username is jeanmicheljarre and the video is called "Blog - fan videos".

COOL! Downloaded this and cant stop watching the damn thing or rather listening to the thing. Great solo and touch with the break before the solo.
BernerStudios 3 years ago
Thank you. :-) The break before the solo was a necessity to give me time to change to the solo lead sound (while the M3's internal sequencer takes over synth string duties for the duration of the solo).
But it sounds cool, and with some added reverb to the "machine run" loop, it's quite successful in "pausing" the song while building anticipation for the solo, when the song again "explodes" into sound.
rfoshaug 3 years ago
I don't understand how you do this, but I'm very, very, impressive, Yes, you're the man, I never see this so well played, it's like you were part of the band of JMJ.

I was going to just say that I hate Black Sabbath, but I actually did a search for Black Sabbath here on YouTube and played one of their songs from 1970 just to be sure I know what I'm talking about before answering to your comment.
So now I know how Black Sabbath sounds, and... (drumroll...)... I do hate Black Sabbath.
But if you like Black Sabbath then good for you. :-)

awesome stuff man. hey whats the name of the sound you use for the solo? for some reason i cant find it on there
earlynov15 4 years ago
The sound is called "Revolutions Lead" and it's sound U-A001 on my M3. In other words, it's a sound I've made myself. :-)
It's based around a saw waveform, and not a very complicated sound. Also, not extremely close to the original solo sound from the album, but close enough. :-)
rfoshaug 3 years ago
Where did you get the D-50 Hammers Loop from ?! I mean do you have it sampled it in ?!
leefuji 4 years ago
Yes, I sampled it from the original Revolutions CD by Jarre. As the song starts with this loop only, it was very easy to sample.
It really is an important ingredient for this song. It defines the sound of the entire piece, and it would be extremely difficult to program this sound using the onboard sounds of the M3 (or any other synth) only. So sampling is definitely the way to go on this one.
All other sounds and drums in my version of this song, however, are created without sampling.
rfoshaug 4 years ago
Cool that's what I thought , because in the begining I had doubts that you were really playing this until I played it a few times to catch the differences between yours and the original. But then I was like there is no way that you re-program that D-50 loop and get it so close in sound to the original lool, have you seen this one youtube of jarre playing live and one of this synths had some dirt in the wheel or keys and it got OFF-TUNE during live performance, its funny !!
Great job man ;-)

stumppi 4 years ago
I'm going to buy this synth now. I'm pretty noob in this, because I have korg tr. So how does those drums "appears" in about 1:00? Have you programmed them to come or how?
stumppi 4 years ago
Yes, the drums are recorded into the sequencer, just like the lead string sound during the part when I play the solo.
For the drums, I used loop recording (looped 2 measures) and laid down drum sound by drum sound. Then I copied those measures for the rest of the song, and erased the measures during the solo (because that part has different drums).
rfoshaug 4 years ago
Totally nailed it there, well done - I love playing that piece, just cant quite get the solo.
;)

this is my 2nd comment... I dunno y I alwyz wanna look at this video again and again...maybe it's the sound coz its FAT, and you play really fantastic...this video inspired me to go to a music store and bash an M3 module, lol! joke! U inspired me to go to a store to configure out and play M3...Also, i've got some Ethnic Soundfonts here, how do I import them to M3???
rapperyz 4 years ago
Very well done. You really made best use of the sequencer there without becoming 'lazy' IE. the sequencer takes of the synth pad while you play the lead and switch back again after, makes it much more interesting.
I'm going rustle out my Chronology song book later at sit down with Reason 4 to see what I can come up with - You've inspired me!

Fantastic - Love the pause at 2:35, something that Jarre should incorporate into his version if he see's this.

Nice - the lead playing is fantastic!
It reminds me a lot of Purple Motion, a demo scene musician from 15 years ago or so ago. I wasn't familiar with Jarre's work at the time, so I never realized how much PM borrowed from Jarre.
