NIN brought 'industrial' to the 'mainstream', to an alternative crowd... But I doubt anyone would argue NIN were EBM, or contrived. There's a big difference in genre, Trent was influenced by Gary Numan!

It's like, being angry at Depeche Mode for being mainstream, and therefore 'posers' because well, in the 80's, they were quite popular! But we're all thanking DM for being so fucking influential, to EBM and industrial music and more.
