Regardless of anything else, when they were on they were ON!!! This show is so over the top it's unbelievable. Good luck to any groups trying to top this one!
WOW!!!.... DP was soooo much more of a muture sounding band with Tommy aboard....Its a shame that it was such a short time these musicians were together.. At least we have Come Taste The Band to enjoy inperpetuity....RIP Tommy
I saw both II & IV in the 70's (Old timer). Both were kick ass in concert. You were at a DP concert, and there were none better. Sure, they had their bad days like everyone else. But you KNEW when you went to see them it was gona be fuckin GREAT! Check out their performance in '74 California Jam. It was Sabbath,Eagles, etc., they blew everyone offstage. The last act didnt want to go on after them. They said"how do we follow that?"
All these years later we find out that Tommy & Glenn were struggling to play cause they couldn't score heroin and had to play going thru withdrawal hell... still some damn good music for its time!
It was a bad move letting Hughes sing with purple ,and i use the term "sing" loosely!Hughes always wanted to be the centre of attention on stage, and always tried to drown out his better,David Coverdale. The guy couldn't even "sing" in tune,so, screeched his way through set after set.Be gone i say,and good riddance too...
@SuperXU1 Few, if any, singers would even attempt to reach some of the high notes Hughes does here. I think that he and Coverdale complement each other by and large - they certainly did so when I saw them play live. Also, Bolin had been messing with this riff since at least 1971 - interesting then that by the time the song was made Hughes should sing it.
@SuperXU1 Ah, but it did inject a new dynamic into the band. The vocals became the dominant drama in the night-to-night, show-to-show performance aspects of the band. It was an amazing era to see the Purple live.
@Deathsiren You obviously know absolutely nothing about which you speak. Also, when you have progressed to more than two sylable words, then and only then, you will be able to engage me in a adult conversation, without resorting to a child-like retort. So until then,if you want to be taken seriously, take yourself back to your cave, grow some intelligent neurons, and study up on some basics, such as;Key, pitch, cord progression and harmonization. Not to mention, chord sequence, composition, consonance.etc, etc
@SuperXU1 Oh really? I know nothing of which I speak about? Based on what? Assumptions? Haha. I bet you are such a better musician then Mr.Hughes, that's why you spend you time trying to be a music god on youtube. Please, post your band (if you have one), I will make sure to show you why I know more about music than you in return, boy.
Its funny, that as the years go by, the rock press have warmed to Come Taste The band. I guess they only had a downer on it at the time, due to the erratic live shows, sadly due to Glenn and Tommy's drug problems.
Ive always said if that on the few occasions the band were on the money, they were outstanding
@dockaiser Tommy Bolin was an amazing guitarist, but IMO Jimmy Page should be named as "guitar god of '70". Tommy wasn't always on top, Jimmy was (not only for popolarity). What do you think about?
@LukeBerto Well Jimmy is of course the god father of guitar, but check out those LZ Tour '77 videos and you will realize, Jimmy wasn't always on top either
I love both of them, I don't think there is a best guitar player. They were equal good players, plus I should name Jeff Beck and John McLaughlin as much as Keith Richards and Pete Townshend. They all belong in the pantheon of guitar players, IMO...
I think that Bolin added a great funk tone to DP, they wrote fantastic songs, but the past was too heavy: Bolin was a complete different guitar player from Blackmore, the original soul of DP sound. If I was Bolin I should not accept to play with DP. He was famous, but in DP will be remembered as "Ritchie's successor": why gettin in? People screaming "Where is Ritchie?" at DP concerts.. Playin hard rock songs while you're one of the most famous fusion-blues guitarist.. why?
@dockaiser With all due respect my friend, THEE Godfather of electric guitar is the other JIMI, having influenced everyone else that followed, including the other JIMMY. = ) You can hear Jimi's influence on this tune clearly, mostly thru the use of the Univibe effect Tommy used, as well as some of the licks. You are certainly correct that there can be no "best" player. Its all a matter of taste. I LOVE this era of DP and hate it when the so-called "Purists" disrespect these guys. This SMOKES!!
@dockaiser Wow! A G-rated reply on YouTube! Refreshing! Seriously, "the best" and "favorites" and "Godfather" are all subjective terms, and I guess a case could be made for anyone of the guys you listed. I am a HUGE fan of every one of them! Thanks again for being civil and not calling me every name in the book for having a different opinion!
Ahhhhh.... and that's how it's done. Indeed it is.
