I hope nobody believes this candle lighting practice precedes the 9th century. It was introduced into mainstream Judaism only in order to negate the Qaraite movement.
And the circular arm motions whose source is almost certainly pagan witchcraft were introduced even later under Qabbalic influence.
@ErnestoPonce123 this video is a great educational tool for people- what a shame you use it for your "advertising" :-( oh and one more thing, guess what?? DON'T FORGET, Jesus was Jewish :D
Hi Rabbi - thank you for posting this. I've started shabbat with my family for a few months know and learned what I was doing wrong from this video. As for reciting kiddush, how do you suggest I best learn its tune? I imagine there isn't something like sheet music for prayers, are there? Thank you.
Rabbi last weekend I went to a different shul then I normally go to . they were using a different siddur then the one I'm use to the one I use is ashkenaz there was small diffrence in wording why isn't all siddur all the same sorry if the question is silly but as I become more Observant I wish to do things the right way. Shabbat Shalom
Thank you Rabbi Garfinkel. I grew up singing these prayers on Friday nights, but admittedly it has been a long time. The rehearsal dinner for my wedding is on Friday night next week, and it felt appropriate to perform these prayers. By watching your video, I am now reminded of one or two lines I forgot how to sing. Thank you.
@rabbigarfinkel God blesses you. I am grateful for your lessons. The most important is your great message. Nevertheless I ask you to have care with the strong American English accent of american jews. If you'd do something about it, it would be lovely. It is a problem that not all the American Jews suffer. Jews of other countries do not have so many negative influence of their languages on their Hebrew. In those countries, for instance, the trouble is not so hard. Thanks. Regards from Lisbon
After lighting the wicks, here we hold the match still, pointing upright. It then goes out by itself, rather than our having to shake or blow it out, which would mean that our last act before the brachah was extinguishing fire rather than generating light.
shabbat shalom I have a question I am a singal father my wife died 6 years ago would you sugest that I kinddel the shabbath light or have a female friend sorry for the silly question I trying to my best to teach my son but not sure if I'm going about it the right way
Shavua tov. I'm sorry to hear about your late wife. Your question is not silly at all -- it's a good question. The answer is that you should light the Shabbat candles for your house. A man who is single (widower or simply a bachelor) has the obligation to light Shabbat candles himself. Good luck to you and your son.
you shouldn't extinguish the match.

no kippah??

Yes, I am wearing a kippah in the video. I guess the lighting isn't very good. I know I'm wearing a kippah because I don't see my bald spot! :)

This is a great video. I learned Kiddush from it. I would love a whole series of prayers sung clearly and tunefully. Many thanks Rabi Garfinkel.
