Aishwarya did a great job too! Personally I think Ash is more beautiful and a better dancer, but OLD IS GOLD!! Loved the old Umrao Jaan. The new Umrao Jaan is not upto the expectations but one should give it a try. It was beautifully made.

@sonaaro aji nahi, alfaz ke maani bataana ghalat nahin. Lekin ghuroor aur talkhi se apne khayalaat zaahir karna zaroor ghalat hai. Jis bande( NewAfghanCinema1) se aapne poochha ki kya usey falaan-falaan alfaaz ke baare mein maaloomaat hai, woh Farsi tak ka ilm rakhta hai. Mujhe lagta hai 'Hindi' se uski muraad Urdu kehne ki hi thee.

You must always remember Hindi/Urdu is a pluricentric language which differs only in its standard forms. You must not be rude to those who can't tell them apart.

Why do I want to learn Urdu, and Lucknow Urdu at that? Just listening to thses masterpieces and others like Chalte Chalte from Pakheza and Pyar Kiya Tho Darna Kyaa from Mughal-e-Azam. Can't beat the lyrics, the music, singing, acting. Gold puregold, and now all we get is dross!

@had79gul Very true. I believe Ms. Rekha practiced the delivery of the language (Urdu) for a few months before taking up the role. Lots of people who have seen the recent Umrao Jaan just disliked it esp. because of Ash's poor dialogue delivery. Perhaps artists fo yesteryears were more sensitive to small language/cultural nuances and worked with commitment to maintain the authenticity of a particular situation but not so now.

ah! the beauty of this song...it is fabulous...The original novel 'Umrao Jaan Ada' is a beautiful piece of literature and anyone interested in knowing about the culture of 19th-century Awadh must absolutely read it. It has been translated into English too. While the film is a watered-down version of the novel,it is captivating nonetheless.
